You can probably get a good window into how smart or not this coaching staff is over the next three weeks. Under this construct. You are not risking Rodgers more then a couple series here and there. And almost certainly not in game one. He can work out kinks with receivers and running backs in practice and frankly if Jones is a bust and can't protect they are ****** anyhow ( he is the joker in all this) They moved him to left with maybe dumb intentions that he'd be better. He might just be a stiff. Rudy is a journeyman pro. He doesn't need a ton of work. If Rodgers gets hurt it will be what it is. Which gets me to my point. Other then shaking rust off which doesn't take much.........what really matters is figuring out if Will Howard might have IT. Because undoubtedly come next April you will be tasked with the number 20th ish pick deciding if they have to trade up, stay pat or not draft a Q at all. Based on the next three weeks. So you better have a good idea. Id get a look in game two with group one. For F'n sure. Bucs are a perfect opponent.

With Coach Tomlin’s history of RE-action and NOT———— PRO-action, I have a feeling we will be entering the draft blind.

Obviously, should there be injuries that dictate the on-field display of said Will Howard……….. then we will have better insight.

Salute the nation

I think that Howard should get the majority of pre-season reps. We know what Mason brings and we cant risk Rodgers getting hurt. Let will get tons of reps and see how it goes.

If the last 18 years has shown anything it is that this question has already been answered and it is that the coaching staff is very mediocre. A coaching staff will never be smarter than its HC and his intelligence/football acumen is very mediocre.

Anything that happens in preseason matters not, other than significant injuries. Everything else is 110% inconsequential.

Mike has even proven this very tidbit by showing some things that worked in preseason only to revert back to his 100% predictable proven past once the season starts.

Preseason is simply a time for players 50-60 to fight for those last 3 spots on the depth chart and avoid injuries…absolutely nothing more the way the Steelers approach it.

If Howard looks decent with 2s and 3s vs 2s and 3s that’s a positive, but in the grander scheme won’t really tell anything about his future.

I hope the hell they're either picking in the top 10 or near last to last. The hell with the carbon copy of a decade draft slot.

Agreed. But AR is 41 almost 42. He isn't moving all that much

Point at bottom is my point. No reason to put him against 2s and 3s. Let's see what he does against ones. Especially in game two.

I want to see the kid play. Rudy is better than mitch was. Rogers is viewed by Tomlin as a winged god.

Let the kid take his lumps.

Exactly. It isnt sink or swim for the season here. But if you want to compare Will Howard to next year's crop.......what better possible opportunity are you going to get. Very unlikely the Steelers will be in the Manning kid range should he declare. Or likely not in the range of any of the more sure fire picks without a significant trade up. You will never get better film.

About 6 years ago, the team that drafted and developed Ayahuasca A-Ron decided it was time to draft his replacement, so they did. That enabled them to ditch him a couple years back, and this shows the purposeful plan of the Pack vs. Steelers lack of long term plan at QB.

Sort of.

I read a couple of articles that said Howard and Frazier helped A A Ron a few times with plays etc.

So I want that sword sharpened to where it can slice paper.

You give him reps where he is nice and comfy realllllly comfy.

I don’t want game one looking like a train wreck on offense.

Other than that sure give Will more reps, Rudy and the journeyman less too.

Preseason reps against other teams scrubs without game planning tell very little towards accurate assessments. I know you’re suggesting playing him vs the other’s ones but ya can’t force who the other team plays, how the other team plays, etc… preseason is a joke aside from the bubble players searching to make the back end of a roster or latch onto someone’s PS. Teams don’t show squat.

If you want to accurately evaluate Howard it would have to be during the regular season when Rodgers is out with injuries or the Steelers are mathematically eliminated from contention. I predict we will be seeking another Tomlinship floating right around .500 this season so Rudy will get the nod with such a prestigious streak of chips on the line. Howard will not factor in the equation as the plan is already set to draft a QB early next year. A new GM won’t go 3 drafts needing to fill a QB spot without drafting one early. Howard will get scraps and if he’s lucky will become Landry Jones no matter how much we want him to succeed. Tomlin doesn’t develop QBs…they need to come in as a finished product…not his job. Rudy would have to shut the bed for him to get a crack at any meaningful play time and he’ll have to shine in whatever scraps he gets imo.

Mike has just proven he doesn’t know how to handle QBs, so while agree with your theory of getting him some meaningful play I doubt he gets anything that allows anyone to accurately assess him.

So how do you feel about evaluating QBs vs. College level talent which all but the very best will not play in NFL preseason.

I just dont think we should draft a QB just to draft one. Im also not a fan of sacrificing basically the whole draft to move up. I get we need a QB but if take one just to take one we are just wasting a pick / multiple picks. We can be patient and roll a yr or two w/ Rudy / Howard. If we pick someone and it doesnt work out fans will say they reached. If we dont pick anyone fans will say they are not addressing the situation. Defintely a tough spot to be in
