A possible red flag on Durpee

I think we've actually had some pretty dumb OLB's in the past that worked.

I doubt Harrison's or Porter's or Lloyd's wonderlic scores would set the world on fire....

I'm pretty sure Deebo graduated from Kent State in four years and Greg Lloyd might be a psychopath but he graduated in four years with a degree in electrical engineering.

I would also add that Kentucky used Dupree all over the field in different roles. Is that what you do with a linebacker that is mentally challenged??? In other words, I think the appropriate thing is to tell Coach to "Go Fish!". Thanks for starting yet another thread but this one is D.O.A.

See QB get QB...See ball get player with ball...could care less what his wonderlick is...maybe his wife/GF care about his wonderlick..but I dont

The Wonderlic is a pretty challenging exam -- Coach if you scored a 38 that's fetching impressive.

I've taken it for jobs in the past and never have rec'vd the scored results; though I did inquire. I hardly believe it has any relevance to understanding football or many other professions; certain minds are taylored to handle that exam; heck even myself with the math I have to take a little more time to figure it out myself and under the time constraints I've been stumped halfway through it.

I don't think it was hard at all. All you have to do is read the questions from start to finish and focus. Some of the questions are beyond easy. Others take some time to figure out with simple math. Years ago I scored a 1260 on the SAT ( which only had a math and verbal back then ) which was considered good, but far from Ivy League.

Basically if you have a 4 year college degree you should score at least a 25 on the wonderlic.

Take a sample test.

It has been reported that many coaches prefer an average to low wonderlic score, because players with very high scores tend to question team strategies and moves more. The NFL is not rocket science and you dont need to be intelligent at all to excell in it, regardless of what spin they try to push. You may wqant a guy on the higher end relaying plays or calling the changes on the field, but for the most part there is a long list of learning challened guys who became great players in the NFL....

If he was a QB, I'd be concerned. If he was playing Mack and making the calls I'd be a little concerned. OLB, not concerned.

And I'm pretty sure ESPN and The NFL Network prefer low wonderlic scores when they hire former players to talk about the NFL on TV...

it could explain a lot :)

Maybe if his head was too big we might have something?

Shades of Warren Sapp and Deion Sanders...

Brain functions are out of my league, so I'll go with what Wkik says.

One of the main methods used to establish a relationship between intelligence and the brain is to use measures of Brain volume. The earliest attempts at estimating brain volume were done using measures of external head parameters, such as head circumference, however, such approximations proved to be inaccurate when estimating brain size. More recent methodologies that were employed to study this relationship are post-mortem measures of brain weight and volume. However, such measures also proved to be somewhat inconclusive, yielding diverging results depending on sex, which hemisphere was examined and on the type of intelligence measured.

The most widespread methodology in contemporary neuroscience to measure brain volume and size is MRI. MRI is a non-invasive technique used to study the brain structure and function (using fMRI) of living subjects. Overall, larger brain size and volume is associated with better cognitive functioning and higher intelligence. The correlations range from 0.0 to as high as 0.6, and are predominantly positive. On average, the correlation between brain volume and intelligence is between 0.3 and 0.4, with one meta-analysis of 37 studies with a total of 1530 subjects estimating the correlation to be 0.33. The specific regions that show the most robust correlation between volume and intelligence are the frontal, temporal and parietal lobes of the brain. Therefore it can be safely concluded that larger brains predict greater intelligence.

Ike was dumb as a box of rocks..... if you ever have seen a interview etc.... most would agree. Didn't slow him on the football field. I am sure there is many many other examples.

His wonderlic result worries me not.

The kid will receive his bachelor's degree in 4 days. Yeah, he's pretty damned stupid..

Not saying Dupree is intelligent or not but don't use this as proof he is. I know quite a few people with degrees who can't operate a can opener.

Just making sure he actually HAS a degree to fall back on says he's at least got more common sense than most of the guys in his draft class.

Coach is either trying to stir the pot or just showing some hate on our first round pick. Either way I guess I will have to wait on his next 10 to 15 threads on the matter to really figure it out.

Trust me... If Coach is hating on our first round pick that's a GREAT thing!

Coach, is his head perhaps a bit too large as well?

Coach is way off here (as usual). Just take a look at Dupree's term paper he submitted to get his degree. And the irony of Coach misspelling Dupree's name in the thread title should not be lost on anyone... ;)

That is the best part of his entire thread actually..LOL

It was reported he scored a 13. That doesn't mean that he did. That may be a rumor leaked by a team that wanted him to fall.

Even if it is true, 13 is not low enough for concern. It's on the low end but not alarmingly low, particularly for an OLB. If he was a QB or OL or S, then it may be a concern.

The wonderlic does not predict football success. Ryan Fitzpatrick nearly scored a perfect score which means he's a genius. He reads a defense like he's mentally challenged. Dan Marino was supposed to be dumb and nobody made quicker reads.

It's just like any other measurable. If a prospect scores off the chart low, or off the chart high, then you have to re-evaluate.

When i watched Dupree, i saw a player with a lot more responsibilities than most other LBs.

Bud Dupree was asked to do A LOT of different things in college. I'll take hard work and passion any day, and I think with some good coaching he will be just fine. Wonderlic Score..it's needless to embarrass a person, but a score of "4" and "6" have been recorded at the combine. Apparently this means these two NFL players do not have the ability to feed themselves, so how accurate can it really be?
