The ridiculous narratives of preseason football

I see Haskins being made to “prove it” this year. IF he does, then NEXT year is where he gets to take a shot at it. The Steelers gave him a chance to prove he ready to compete once Ben is gone, not before.
Ditto. He has 0 chance to be the backup and the only way he leap frogs Rudolph is if Roethlisberger goes down and Rudolph fails to move the offense for 2-3 games I could then see him get a shot at the thrown. But that is assuming he beats Dobbs out for #3. We all gotta remember that Roethlisberger utilizes Dobbs to help analyze the defense. Haskins literally ran the wrong play while the rest of the team ran the right play. So I very much doubt Haskins is going to help analyze a defense with Roethlisberger anytime soon.

I do feel the coaching staff likes Haskins upside so if he and Dobbs are a tie I feel the upside of Haskins beats out Dobbs. But there is a snowballs chance in HELL that Haskins is the #2 QB this year. I feel Rudolph gets starter snaps in game 3 again and in game 4 they probably only have Rudolph play a series and then let Haskins and Dobbs play the rest. But by that time I feel the team will have decided between Haskins and Dobbs for #3. I also don't see Dobbs making it on the PS.

you really think Haskins is that far ahead of Rudolph??
Yep. Not even close. Rudolph has been good vs starters. I wish he'd push it down field a little more as I believe he's only hit one over 25 yards to Claypool but he has been very accurate on the intermediate routes where you move the chains in today's game. I feel Haskins needs to walk before he runs. Lets see him out perform Dobbs, which in my book they are about tied in how they look. Dobbs understands the offense better and Haskins definitely is the better athlete.

I don't understand the love fest for Haskins. All he's done is play OK vs scrubs in 2 preseason games. Some people are acting like he's throwing for 400 yards and 3 TDs and scrambling for 80 yards per game. Meanwhile you'd think Mason has 0 completions and 5 INTs.

People just hate Mason Rudolph for some reason. You saw it last year too when people wanted to see the undrafted FCS guy Duck. I think if the steelers suited up a peanut vendor and he completed a pass, some people would have him ahead of Rudolph.

The difference here is that Haskins was a very high draft pick and has the potential to be a long-term replacement for Ben.

I agree that he's currently far behind Rudolph, but his top end is much higher. His issues with Washington were mostly mental, and that was on a team without the ability to develop him in that aspect. There is hope that with the appropriate guidance from this team (and learning by watching Ben) that he can become what he was drafted to be.

That is why he will be a solid #3 over Dobbs. It will be interesting to see how the #3 QB works out, though. I'm sure Ben wants Dobbs, but I'm guessing management wants Haskins.

Some people hate Rudolph because he is white, just like some hate Haskins because he is black. That is the single most assinine thing to base anything on, left alone a QB.

You also have to understand the fascination the fans have with the 3rd string QB. They always believe the 3rd stringer would become a HOF QB, if only given a chance.

This is it right here. I think most recognize that Rudolph’s ceiling is a good backup/below average starter. There is simply hope that a lightbulb comes on for Haskins and he develops into a quality QB. I still don’t think either guy is the answer after Ben but that is another problem for another day.

Rudolph is a guy that can win games. He can keep you around or just above .500 but won't win you a championship - at least not from what we've seen to date. Right now, he still gives us the best chance to win behind Ben. Since it appears Haskins won't get a chance with our 1's against another teams 1's, he will sit for a season and just learn, which is what he needs. The only bad thing is he won't be getting many reps in practice all year other than the scout team.

4-games back in the division and 2 out of wildcard round.........................Dwayne Haskins is called upon to start and start he does. He wins out, stealing the division and #3 seed in the play offs. He takes us to the AFCCG but loses by a NY minute ******* call that's reversed thus no time on the clock and the STEELERS lose by 2. (running into the kicker was the call but dancing with the stars was the opposing kicker's move). They move the ball closer for a re-kick and itssssssssss goooooooood.

That sums up your 2023 season as BEN Roethlisberger retired last year (completed 2022 season) after two consecutive SB wins and MVP league and MVP SB honors.

Been seeing that in the Steelers FB groups for two years. Invariably it's the black fans who just know Dobbs is better than Ben and a sure-fire hall of famer if coach would just put him in fourth quarter like Uncle Rico. They simply want a black QB.

If haskins cant read the defense, hes ceiling is lower than rudolphs.. Yes he has a greater arm. He has some work to do and i think its possilble he can be coached up. But He still is behind rudolph in that area,, so far.

those people are in the minority. race has nothing to do with it for most people

in the time between Bradshaw and Roethlisberger, many fans seem to feel the back up qb was the next superstar, now that the starter is not in question, it falls back a level. Rudolph is what he is...a back up. Haskins has more upside if he can pull it together. Personally, I don't want to see either one on the field this season (or next if Ben wants to return)

If the next starter is on the roster it is likely Haskins over Rudolph. But maybe snell and a 4th rounder will bring us our next franchise qb

I have seen most of the hae comes from believing that douche bag that brained Mason. I will never believe that claim and think for a minute that Tomlin, Rooney, or the guys like Pouncey who were on the field wouldn't kick his *** and cut him let alone physically defend him on the field if he said what is falsely claimed. I have actually won a few guys over by making them stop and think what this organizations record is and asking if that gels with keeping a racist on the team. I have made a friend or two.

For him to start he would have to slowly spoon fed the offense and learn reads and progressions on the fly. Honestly he has done better than I hoped but still has a long way to go. He probably wishes he could just clap his hands then look over for Urban to make the adjustments like at OSU.

20 other players on the field and no one else heard a thing.

Its possible Haskins gets better over time, but he had two years of stunted growth in Washington because the coaching staff never wanted him drafted and didn’t even give a damn… they sent him out there to fail and then cut him as soon as the crowd turned on him…

I think too much of this is based off of draft position… Haskins has an arm but he has miserable fundamentals at times…

the other thing is we have never seen Rudolph behind an oline that was stable… the past two years ours was crumbling to dust under inept coaching, injuries, and age… and frankly the starting oline this preseason to date has been miserable … people say Rudolph looks jittery… well we haven’t really given him any reason not to…

i just think it’s jumping over a lot of stuff to push Haskins anywhere up the depth chart… if he was drafted in the third round this wouldn’t even be a conversation… they’d be discussing whether his potential is worth losing Dobbs sideline advice…

He is saying Rudy starts...sucks... resulting in the Steelers being temporary AFC North bottom feeders. Then Haskins takes over catches fire. Steelers make it to the championship game but loses off a bullshit last second call. Then DIC revolts and goes on Dancing with Stars but loses to a one legged midget named Skippy.

FWIW, Haskins had his first ever chance to run with the 1s in a 2 minute drill at the end of practice against our #1 D. The result? TD to Claypool.

He earned the right for snaps with the 1s, if he keeps doing this, he will earn more snaps.

(Keep in mind Rudolph/Haskins only have a chance to run with the 1s when Ben is taking a vet day at practice)

As a first Rd pick we all know he has.some talent. We also know the skins let him go and he cleared waivers. Not a ringing endorsement. But hey, he got a TD in practice and cope likes him. Plus between Jan and now he had a visit from the QB fairy, and is now ready to supplant Ben. I bet he could throw a ball over mant woshington

I just think Steeler fans looking for another Ben, and we know Mason isn't anywhere near Ben's talent. Mason is a solid QB and on par with many other good NFL QB's. Haskins has been doing well against scrubs and he's still learning the new offense and getting a feel for the timing of the schemes and personnel. It's going to be a while until things start to slow down for him and he gets comfortable. Until then, we're hoping he is able to reach his potential as a high draft prospect and keep the Steelers in the title hunt for years to come.
