I found this interesting. Whether it be motivational or Tomlin is simply calling it as it is. Can't start from a hot tub, so it isn't impossible to see BigDot not getting the start come game 1.

I just posted it in the other Dotson thread. No one wanted to believe Dejan when he reported the Steelers weren't happy with Dotson. Tomlin did not hide his feelings today.

I just don't get it.

I believe the initial reports back in June was that he showed up to mini-camps out of shape, but he looked, at least physically, to be in better shape than he was last year.

Must be an attitude issue or something.

I haven't heard anything about an attitude issue. I am thinking it revolves around him not being just shoved ahead of RC missing the huge chunk of camp that he has.

Little surprising from Mike that he was so bold in putting a player on blast.

Not a chance. Chuks immediately returned to practice with the first teamers. Green, who never played in the NFL, was placed in the starting lineup. The coaches are not happy with Dotson.

Good point Chuks was shoved right back in there and that is with the rook reportably playing well.

It's just hard to imagine what else it could be, though.

It's one of those things that we'll likely never get an answer to unless it gets to the point they release him and he spills the beans out of spite.

No doubt. If he means he has not worked because he is injured and missed a lot of time it will be one thing. If he is disappointed with the work he has put in, that would be the strongest indictment of a player I've seen Tomlin make. That wouldn't be putting him on notice. That would be he is cut.

I believe he benched Rashard Mendenhall once or twice in his second season for lack of effort in practice.

Watching Tomlin on NFLN right now. He keeps hammering the same points; work ethic, conditioning, embracing competition. Sounds like Dotson thought the job was his and Tomlin wanted him to work for it...apparently he has not put in the work to earn it.

Dejan is pretty adamant that he never said Dotson was out of shape. From his site's live training camp blog:

"I'm going to keep repeating that I never reported that Dotson was out of shape. An Instagram comment that tried to summarize my report added that, and that's what went wild. What I reported was that the coaches were disappointed in his offseason. I still have no idea why."

Dotson is still banged up and has still yet to practice fully. Saying Dotson isn't better than Coward, is a farce.

That is true, it was just speculation it was conditioning. If I had to guess his source was probably an assistance coach or Colbert.

I just vaguely recall his conditioning being talked about during that time.

I'm not really sure what the hell "disappointed in his off-season" means if conditioning isn't the issue.

New playbook, new blocking scheme and techniques .... maybe he didn't do enough of the mental stuff as they expected.

He did. 2009. Mendenhall came out back from being benched with 165 yards rushing and 2 TDs.

For those saying he’s not called guys out before—on Willie Parker “Every day I walk past 5 Lombardi Trophies, not 5 rushing titles”

Life experience lead me to hypothesize that it was communicated with him expectations that weren’t met. Maybe there more to the reason he wasn’t replacing Feiler despite his struggles at G last year. Feiler always did all that was asked of him to all he could give within his abilities. Coaches will almost always take that over talent.

Hines made it first with killing it on special teams. Troy Edwards publicly assumed he was going to start opposite Plaxico Burress. Think it’s clear who had HoF Career

It has to be the mental thing/playbook/blocking schemes. He worked with the same coach several of our rookies worked with. His pics with him and the iron suggest he is a ******* beast! So that kinda leaves the mental preparation. Either that, or Tomlin found him ******* his wife!

The comment about Wilie Parker or benching of Mendanhall are different. I'm not saying he has never been hard on a guy or made tough decisions. I'm saying I have no recollection of him doing his talking in the media. Coupled with the reports of their disappointment in Dotson saying it like that is pretty strong. Now before any panty bunching happens I'm not saying unwarranted. Just out of character.

2 things to add.

1. Maybe its something he is doing outside of the game.. Doesnt make a whole lot of sense,, but if its not his work ethic ,, then what? He worked out fine in his time on the field last year.

2. WTF is up with Tomlin. Calling Haskins Mr. Checkdown, ******** on dotson now. Its rare but when he does it, its kinda ******. Calling Walace OTP.. Wonder if the HOF speeches got him fired up and now hes back to mr namecalling motivator,.

Yep. Must be those HOF speeches.

Dotson is completely dismissing it to not practicing. I again will say that Okorafor didn't practice and went back into the lineup and a rookie is in the starting lineup. Also, the guy ahead of him is terrible. If Tomlin, Canada, and Klemm had full confidence in Dotson as the starting LG he would be back in with the starters. They clearly want to challenge him and not hand him a starting job for a reason.

Exactly. Dotson hasn't returned to practice fully from his injury yet.

If he's healthy enough to practice, he's healthy enough to practice with the starters. He's behind Rashad Coward, a guy who arguably shouldn't even be on the roster.
