A Formal Apology to Mike Tomlin

I am torn. He is doing a great job this year. coach of the year should be in consideration. but if is capable of this why be so mediocre the last few years? He had better talent in last several years if he coached this good any year, we probs win number 7

Teams that are chocked with talent rarely win SB’s (or win at all). Too many egos. I suspect the effects of all the dysfunction are magnified when you get to the playoffs. He did as good a job of keeping the team focused in spite of it until the wheels started to fall off (Debo, Bell, Brown, and even Ben to a much lesser degree). The fact that none of the first three have amounted to much after leaving the Steelers tells you something. Maybe the coach wasn’t the problem. Not saying he’s perfect, but the hate and disrespect is undeserved.

well, sure, so far, totally wrong about how most of us figured things would go without ben, so by all means, stroke yourself off as you pat yourself on the back, you've earned it. but it's still only 13 games, and again, if i were in your shoes, i wouldn't be crowing until we actually get to the playoffs and, ya know, win some games.

I don't understand what masturbation or fellatio has to do with supporting your team? I'm sorry you're having such a hard time doing so.

And BTW, this season is already a success, playoffs or not. Defense is dominant. And guess who's calling those plays? Your head coach.

Yeah, talented teams never win ****.

WTF?

Tomlin has no problems winning games in the regular season, he fails miserably in the playoffs

I can think of quite a few eggs his teams have laid against bad teams in the regular season that led to them missing the playoffs....

But this year erases all that I guess.

So, the past several years, when the media stated repeatedly that it was Tomlin's defense that was woefully under performing all of Tomlin's apologists blamed Butler and wanted him fired since he was the DC. Now that we have 10 first round draft picks on defense and they are finally playing well it is the Tomlin that gets the credit...yeah, makes total sense.

Never mind that this year we now have 10 first round draft picks on defense. If you can't win/perform with that than you never will. This season only solidifies what we have seen over the past decade, if Tomlin has more talent than an opponent he will have success. Tomlin and his staff are not capable of coaching players up to get more out of them or make them play above their abilities. If we had this same defense for the past 5 years with the offense we had, this team would have had at least 1, maybe 2 more rings on their fingers.

Tomlin was partly calling the defense last year. This year he is making all the calls on D. That is the difference.

So the past several years, when his defense was continually falling flat on their face he saw no need to take over calling 100%. Seems to me that when the Steelers win all of the apologists give Tomlin all of the credit. When the Steelers lose, it's everyone but Tomlin that's to blame. Again, having 10 first round draft picks on defense now has more to do with why the defense is suddenly elite again, not Tomlin supposedly taking over all of the calls on D.

Tomlin started getting into the defense when LeBeau was still here, that's why it started looking like the tampa 2. .

So, it's your contention that on the defense, players like Heyward, Dupree, Watt, Bush, Hargrave, Williams have not been coached up. OK .. And I suppose the players on offense who are performing this year are all super talented players ...none have been coached up and they are succeeding (albeit barely) solely on their superior skill.
Yep .... I can see that. smh

As I recall, Tomlin said he called defense differently when Roethlisberger was playing. One can assume that means he and Butler relied on a "safer, less aggressive defense" to hold leads and nurse clock rather than his current situation of relying almost solely on the defense to produce turnovers and points.

One can't help but wonder what this team could have done over the last 6 or 7 years if Tomlin had just decided to go balls out, every game.

I'm not allow to go balls out anywhere...

uh ok? don't get mad at us with proper perspective because we don't want to join folks like you in line to suck coach tomlin's dick because of an 8-5 record after 13 games. hey, things are pretty good at the moment, happy that coach has been able to lead this team through many undesirable circumstances, let's hope they keep it up until February. But no, i won't join you and your cohorts to lap up his ball crust because you think the last 13 games the steelers have played, exonerates a coach from the prior 7-8 seasons of frustration and disappointment, given the expectations.

As I said, petty and vindictive. No offense, you can feel any which way you want to. Nobody's gonna keep you from being bitter and upset. Feel however you want, clearly you've exhausted all other options. I'm just glad Tomlin has this team pointed in the right direction and we're winning games. Not much else matters to me...the rest is for the history books & the pundits.

Lol I'm not bitter or upset, at all. I'm enjoying this season. Maybe hearing that ruins your day, but I dont care

I will issue my formal apology to Mike Tomlin the moment he apologizes for pissing away a 13-3 season with a playoff loss to Blake Bortles and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He didn't come close to apologizing or even accepting some blame in the post game press conference. He put it squarely on his players. This is what he said:

"I stand by the calls we made. We just didn't execute 'em. You know, we wouldn't be having these conversations had we, you know, executed those plays. And such is life."

It's finally dawned on me why it's so hard for Tomlin Nuthuggers to blame him for anything -- they're just following the leader.

By Logan Leslie SteelerNation.com I, as many fans have been very critical of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin throughout the last few seasons. I have noted in previous articles his failure to coach the team up against below average competition, the team’s lack of discipline and poor defensive performances, among other facets of the […]

Not an English major here but why is there a , after I in the opening sentence I’m curious because I’m currently drinking with a English professor (composition) and might place a bet to bad he’s a leftist.

I like Mike. I'm not apologizing for anything. He does a good job, I praise him. He does a bad job and I hate it.

He has a mixed record but he seems to have it going strong this season considering our losses at key positions.

There's a difference between scheme and calling every play.

I was giving you a chance to clarify this ridiculous statement. -

Your reply above does not.

Because it took that long to assemble that many 1st rounders.

You mean 1st rounders like Artie Burns, Bud Durpee (who only got good this year), Ryan Shazier (injured but not playing), Jarvis Jones, and Ziggy Hood?

Yep.

I just think it’s hard not to correlate Tomlin to Dan Bylsma for the pens, though again I think tomlin is much brighter than bylsma...

Both were young head, first time head coaches whose stock had climbed quickly.
Both took over championship caliber teams and won early with them...
Both had ridiculous success in the regular season
Both had massive injury laden seasons that they were able to get into playoff contention with.
Both had a long string of playoff failures

Dan Bylsma was fired with one of the greatest win percentages in nhl history
As his defenders pointed out, he was quickly offered other jobs, and took the Sabers job
His flaws that his detractors had pointed out were magnified outside the structure of the Pens organization, had a miserable run, was fired for the shortcomings pointed out here, and has never gotten another chance...

As I point out often, Chuck Noll had his greatest coaching job in 89, and two year later retired rather than risk being forced put or having a short leash

Head coaches with tomlins tenure at one team rarely win big... Im just saying don’t be surprised if, barring a super bowl win, three years from now another head coach is on the sidelines
