A Formal Apology to Mike Tomlin

As I recall, Tomlin said he called defense differently when Roethlisberger was playing. One can assume that means he and Butler relied on a "safer, less aggressive defense" to hold leads and nurse clock rather than his current situation of relying almost solely on the defense to produce turnovers and points.

One can't help but wonder what this team could have done over the last 6 or 7 years if Tomlin had just decided to go balls out, every game.

Calling things differently on offense is obvious, but not on defense. You should call defense to try to limit the other team from moving the ball and scoring, I don't care who your QB is.
I don't care those players were with other teams, and are here now as to a big reason we are winning. What it does do is raise the question, why the hell can we use a **** load of picks on defense and our defense still struggled year in year out?
I have not called those 3 playoff wins lucky.

Not sure how much I believe the statement he made about calling the defense differently. For one you have different personnel out there then before. Minkah and Bush have changed this defense, as has Nelson. This defense went from one we hoped didn't give up a game ending score to being the most disruptive defense in the league. The lead the league in sacks and turnovers. They didn't just flip a switch and change how the defense plays. They went and got an All Pro safety who has allowed our secondary to clamp down on the passing game and gives our pass rushers more time. That this coincided with Ben going down is hard for us to analyze because we don't know if they make the Minkah trade if Ben is healthy. Ben came into this year with that elbow messed up too.

I recall a discussion last year, asking, "When is the last time the defense made a stand and won a game?"

This year?

Week 10 vs. Rams x 2
Week 12 vs. Bungles
Week 13 vs. Browns
Week 14 vs. Cardinals

I have certainly been critical of Tomlin in the past - mostly due to his seeming lack of awareness and dubious decisions during games as evidenced by his inability to EVER win a challenge and for losing games to vastly inferior teams at a completely unacceptable rate. I think he actually learned something from last years debacle. #1 he hired a coach to take over the challenge decisions and #2 he figured out that no matter how talented the player is, you have to maintain some kind of control over them and if they are out of control you have to slap them back into reality. He has done a good job this year. He's a very prideful, stubborn guy but this year he has adapted and it has worked out for him and the team. Kudos to him.

Tomlin in his element, doing what he does best.

Who says the Steelers dont have cheerleaders!!!!

I remember the days when Tomlin 'couldn't control the locker room' and 'let the inmates run the asylum'.

It's seems those postulates were poorly formed...

No, I remember when Tomlin was praised for being able to hide all the drama. Nobody knew how bad it was and Tomlin was praised from the hill tops for being able to cover it all up.

Tomlin has done a good job this season, but what does anyone need to apologize for? Are we suppose to apologize for wasting that crazy talent we had on offense? For losing to Jacksonville at home in the playoffs? How about for losing four of six games to close the season last year and miss the playoffs? Yeah, I'm not apologizing for any of the criticisms. I'm happy the team is in the position its in right now. He's done a good job keeping them together with all of the injuries. I'm happy Colbert got aggressive in the draft and moved up to get Bush. And that he signed Nelson and made a bold trade for Fitzpatrick. Huge props for keeping Dupree when I thought they were overpaying him.

Look i defended Tomlin for years... ill even say there are only a handful of coaches clearly better than him in the nfl right now, but he still has so many flaws... it’s obvious he took over tge D... beyond obvious, but if thats the case why does his friend kieth butler still have a DC title? Wouldn’t it behoove him to get someone capable of calling the D?

Look great job in the regular season this year, but does it excuse one of the worse collapse jobs in Steelers history last season?
Does it excuse 9 years of playoff ineptitude with the greatest collection of offensive talent in Steelers history?

This season is a great coaching job, but it isn’t reflected in his overall body of work... he needs another super bowl run to validate his post leftover cowher player era.... that may happen, but until it does, rushing to validate him with a season he may or may not barely scrape into the playoffs and has made several less than stellar roster moves and calls is not exactly a resounding endorsement of him as a coach to me...

Hey if the Steelers can go all the way this year I'll ******* lobby to put his name on the Lombardi Trophy. I'm certainly not going to apologize for complaining about past seasons **** shows. That was then and this is NOW.

He's the HC of The Steelers. Everyone wins if he's doing well.

Doesn't mean I can't bust on him. I'm a fan. It's called tough fan love.

A great many of us have invested a lifetime in this team.

I love it how steamed Tomlin haters are right around now.... it's pretty hilarious, actually. Instead of thanking the good Lord this season hasn't been a total wash, instead of appreciating the great job by Tomlin & staff, instead of enjoying the unexpected level of success on the field...it's being petty and belittling Tomlin every inch of the way. A vindictive bunch, I tell ya.

uh ok? don't get mad at us with proper perspective because we don't want to join folks like you in line to suck coach tomlin's dick because of an 8-5 record after 13 games. hey, things are pretty good at the moment, happy that coach has been able to lead this team through many undesirable circumstances, let's hope they keep it up until February. But no, i won't join you and your cohorts to lap up his ball crust because you think the last 13 games the steelers have played, exonerates a coach from the prior 7-8 seasons of frustration and disappointment, given the expectations.

I didnt apologize. I offered to give him a fair shot at staying here without my "hate" IF, IF, he grows as the Steelers head coach and becomes the coach they deserve.

No, just pointing out that haters can't accept that Tomlin is having success with a rookie undrafted QB, who happens to be the 4th option and wasn't rostered when the season started. Injuries to the top 3 RBs, top WR, dumping our supposed #2 WR, and Excellent DE. Starting 1-4 and now playing for the #5 seed.

Haters MO: Duh...Tomlin won't never win without Big Ben. You watch and see what kind of coach he is without Ben. HE WILL FAIL!!!!!

Guess what? You're ******* wrong.

well, sure, so far, totally wrong about how most of us figured things would go without ben, so by all means, stroke yourself off as you pat yourself on the back, you've earned it. but it's still only 13 games, and again, if i were in your shoes, i wouldn't be crowing until we actually get to the playoffs and, ya know, win some games.

I am torn. He is doing a great job this year. coach of the year should be in consideration. but if is capable of this why be so mediocre the last few years? He had better talent in last several years if he coached this good any year, we probs win number 7

Gotta remember, the bar is always moving. First it was he wouldn' win without Cowher's players. Next was he would crap the bed without Ben. Now they're saying he's dog **** unless he makes a deep playoff run with this year's team. A team without Ben, Cowher players, an experienced QB, etc. A team devastated by injuries throughout the season. If he accomplishes that, there will be something else. Bet on it

Tomlin has no problems winning games in the regular season, he fails miserably in the playoffs

We have PLENTY of evidence of PLENTY of owners and GM's making dumbass decisions (in hindsight) all over this league. Please spare me the "but but but the owners and NFL execs LOOOOVE Mike Tomlin" bullshit.

Just stating a fact. You may not like it but that's no reason to be a ******* ***** about it.

If anything, Tomlin should be apologizing to the Steelers fan base for the fraud he has perpetrated on the organization and it's fans that last 8-10 years.

I think he has done a fantastic job this year. But that doesn't erase all the times he fell short in the past. I am not a Tomlin hater as I support whoever is in this organization, but this season has to leave fans scratching their heads. Happily, but scratching their heads none the less.

Same here, although no one is allowed to ask that, that makes you a Tomlin hater. It's been the defense that has let this team down mostly over the past 8-10 seasons, then you hear the quote from Tomlin, "you call defense differently when Ben is at QB, than when he is not" That's why I can't totally get on board with him.

I'm just going to keep posting that until someone can tell me what the **** that means.

This whole mantra of members here hating Mike Tomlin is pretty silly. I don't believe anyone here hates Mike Tomlin the man.
What does disappoint the fans on this board are the wins and losses of his team, especially come playoff time. We're fans, cheering when they win and questioning when they fail.
It's human nature to second guess the players and coaches when things don't go well.

No one doubts they are over achieving in recent weeks, praise should go to the coaches and players alike.
I also don't doubt that anyone can question the under achievement of this team in the last 6-8 years.

You noticed that too? There’s always the old standby, “well he should have won ANOTHER one earlier.”
