A Formal Apology to Mike Tomlin

As for Tomlin...

High Floor,
Low Ceiling.

He's just about hit his max. I honestly don't expect much more out of him this season. Indeed I will be pleasantly shocked if he wins 2 more games.

I'm sorry but I would also hold my praise for Tomlin until he starts winning playoff games, no more 1 & outs!!! I acknowledge that he's doing better than what I expected after Ben was out for the season, so I give him his dues for that.

Just to put some context to this discussion, these are the teams the Steelers have beaten so far:
Bengals 1 - 12
Chargers 5 - 8
Dolphins 3 - 10
Colts 6 - 7
Rams 8 - 5
Bengals 1 - 12
Browns 6 - 7
Cardinals 3 - 9

And just think if the Steelers didn't beat the Colts and Browns, both teams would have winning records...

And Ron, the reason why the D wasn't as good is because we didn't have Bush, Nelson, Barron, and Minkah playing on this team yet.

The premise of this thread is ridiculous. Tomlin coached teams have underachieved with massive offensive talent for the last 5 years. They had huge talent on defense too, but didn't let it play aggressively. Now they seem to come together as a team where they fell apart last year. And they may or may not make the playoffs followed most likely by a wildcard exit. But I'm supposed to apologize to Tomlin. They gave him an extension. He earned it this year. Good for him. I will apologize to Tomlin when he apologizes to the fans for the last 5 years.

Can't go back, can only go forward. Lots of stinker games over the last decade which should have been wins but the team would come out seemingly unprepared.

I am feeling scared by seeing these type of threads as sentiment. Please hold your horses. We need to win the SB and should not loose the most SBs to cheaters. Please go one game at a time.

If Tomlin get the COY or TJ get the DPOY or we get into playoffs but by end of the season if we would have lost most SBs team solely to cheaters, there is no meaning for this season.

Our next aim (hope) should be, get into playoffs first.

I know saying apologize to Tomlin should not change anything technically. But I am just feeling scared, it is better to beat as underdog.

Ummmm. Ok.

Why? we used so many 1st and 2nd round draft picks on the defense since Tomlin got here, we needed 4 players that weren't drafted by us to make the defense go?

What a stupid statement. Who the **** cares how they got here. Good GM and coaching decisions to get them here. They are here now, enjoy a dominating D for a change. You do know we have to continue to move forward?

Why is it stupid? It's true, we've spent so many high draft choices and the D has let this team down so many times over the last 10 years. This year the defense is great. And again, I'll ask, Tomlin said he calls defense differently when Ben is at QB, than he does without him. That is a stupid statement. So he's saying when Ben is in there, we don't try to play defense as well, as we do when Ben isn't in there.

Most people and owners around the NFL think Tomlin is easily a top 5 coach in the league. The only people that hate him are Steelers fans.

We have PLENTY of evidence of PLENTY of owners and GM's making dumbass decisions (in hindsight) all over this league. Please spare me the "but but but the owners and NFL execs LOOOOVE Mike Tomlin" bullshit.

much like a very intelligent poster said in another thread. Tomlin is far from perfect but you would have to be a closed minded ******** not to agree he has done a great job of keeping this team focused and motivated to play. They could have easily folded like the bungles or other teams would being 0-3 without their HOF QB for the season, best RB and WR out with injuries, 2nd string QB **** the bed and they turn to an undrafted free agent to lead the team.

and they are 8-5 and control their playoff destiny.

I didn't say it quite like that but thanks!!!

Well, you can only draft so many players in the first round, and we had to grab first rounders from the dolphins and browns to make this engine run, so...

Also sucks that our best 1st rounder of all of our drafts got paralyzed.

I love it how steamed Tomlin haters are right around now.... it's pretty hilarious, actually. Instead of thanking the good Lord this season hasn't been a total wash, instead of appreciating the great job by Tomlin & staff, instead of enjoying the unexpected level of success on the field...it's being petty and belittling Tomlin every inch of the way. A vindictive bunch, I tell ya.

We play who's on the schedule. Also...

There are a select group of posters who believe that Coach Tomlin usually loses to sub par teams---using this year's stats, I'd say that statement can be put to rest as an 'untruth'...

I'm going to say this again - SLOWLY...

What has been the average pick, in the draft of the Steelers, over the past 5 years??? I'll take a wild stab at it and say we averaged at #23. Let that marinate a bit.

How many blue chip players make it to #23 in the first round on average??? We all know NOT MANY is the answer and those that fall that far usually have some sort of baggage that scares teams away.

What does this all mean???

Unfortunately, the Steelers chose conservatively over the past 5 years and, defensively, they had 'stalled out'. Somebody woke up this past draft and lo and behold - we move up in the draft, we identify the right DB to partner w/ Haden, make another well played move for Minkah and there you have it. A new and improved defense.

Oh, I forgot...

Fire Coach Tomlin!!!

Most people and owners around the NFL think Tomlin is easily a top 5 coach in the league. The only people that hate him are Steelers fans.

I wonder how they would react to his fake punt and pass play that left the opponent with an extra 40 seconds. If they want him. Pony up!!!!!!

You,my good man, have tunnel vision. Look at your statement and my response. Nothing to do with this Tomlin quote.
But since you have brought up this Tomlin statement for probably the 10th time in various threads, let’s look at it. When Ben,went down,he also called the O differently than when he was in. When James C went down, they called the running game differently then when he was in. I could go on and on,but you get my drift. When he made this statement, had the D gelled the way it is now? You can’t but help not calling things differently when a player of Ben’ stature go down. Could that not be simply what he meant?

You go on and on about the draft choices for the D. We all know it. But they brought in these guys, and the D seems to be on the way to let’s hope.....greatness. Do you care that much that they were other teams picks? Isn’t the bottom line that they are here, and they are working. For all the criticism,do they also get a little credit for bringing them in? Were you one of the highly critical posters of the trading of our first round draft choice?

If it sounds like I am a Tomlin apologist I am certainly not. I have called for his removal a few times,I believe the first time being the Tebow disaster many years ago. The 3 lucky playoff wins in 10 years have pissed me off to the core. Most of us watch pretty well every minute of every game. We are highly critical. Once in a while you have to give credit when it is due. This season,so far is certainly one of them.Like I said above we do have to move forward.

Mike Tomlin: ‘If I Am Awake And In This Building…I’m Meeting With Somebody’

By Matthew Marczi Posted on December 12, 2019 at 11:00 am

It was a revelation to many when Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joe Haden told reporters last week that head coach Mike Tomlin conducts weekly meetings with many of his position groups throughout the roster. Not that it should have been, especially among those who believe that Tomlin has entirely taken control of the defense.

Even reporters have been taking up this line of thought and injecting it into their questioning. Tomlin was asked about how he makes decisions about who to meet with and when during his Tuesday pre-game press conference, and he gave a typically Tomlin answer.

“Man, if I am awake and, in this building, and they are in the building, I am meeting with somebody”, he said. “I think it is important. I live by the creed ‘no job too small’. We all have to roll our sleeves up and be prepared to ante up and kick in”.

Despite consistently talking about himself in the terms of being a football lifer, his background and eloquence have often falsely given outside observers the impression that he is more of a hands-off sort of coach whose whole life isn’t his profession, though it very clearly largely is.

“Those are just words. The actions are more important, and I like to display that”, Tomlin said of his meetings with players and position groups. “I meet with DBs, I meet with linebackers, I meet with quarterbacks on Wednesday mornings at 7:30. You can go on and on. There is nothing unique or new that is happening in that regard. We are not paid by the hour. Our job is to win. I enjoy what I do”.

It shows, despite his detractors, and seasons such as this can actually be more enjoyable on a base level. The expectations largely flew out the window once Ben Roethlisberger went down, but they have been scratching and clawing and making life miserable for opposing offenses with an insanely ‘splashy’ defense that leads the league in both sacks and takeaways (though two of the latter have come from special teams).

Of Tomlin, Haden said last week, “he’s just very, very, very hands-on with everything with the team”, later adding that he gives “great knowledge and information” pertaining to their position and the upcoming opponent.

There is a famous story about Tomlin as a novice defensive backs coach coming up to All-Pro safety John Lynch in the former’s first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and presenting him with a list of critiques of his game. Lynch could hardly believe it at first, but when he saw the work, he bought in.

“He’ll let you know where you stand, if you’re making the plays, if you’re not”, Haden said of Tomlin. “If he’s going to go shopping for another guy. Just his transparency, and then, he really believes in us and he feels like we can do it until we show him otherwise. I just, I love him”.

Calling things differently on offense is obvious, but not on defense. You should call defense to try to limit the other team from moving the ball and scoring, I don't care who your QB is.
I don't care those players were with other teams, and are here now as to a big reason we are winning. What it does do is raise the question, why the hell can we use a **** load of picks on defense and our defense still struggled year in year out?
I have not called those 3 playoff wins lucky.
