Steelers sign Ex Rams ILB/S Mark Barron

So how does this effect Houston?

Looks like the Steelers didn't want a repeat of last year. No *glaring* need now in the first round. Interesting this happened after Bush's pro day.

It likely means Bush is gone before pick #20, and Barron is the staring ILB / nickel solution.

ILB used to be such an easy position to find because of its responsibilities. With the passing offenses and changing defenses, there aren't a lot of guys who can play well in this role now.

Allen is a guaranteed nothing. Edmunds will stay in the more traditional SS position.

Agreed on both accounts.. I’m just trying to figure out why we like these “tweener” players so much. If we’re going to go after a S, get a FS who can run and cover. If we’re going after an ILB, get a pure ILB who can stay on the field for 3 downs

Yes and no. The new ILB is pretty much the old weak side 4-3 OLB with some safety skills mixed in. A guy who can run and cover. The big 250 pound guys who hit like trucks are gone the used to intercept running backs in-between the tackles are a dying breed.

those don't grow on trees, Barron might be it if healthy. Still a position to address in the draft

I don't think this was a bargain basement deal, I think this was a necessary move, instead of hoping the draft plays out the way we want. We was reminded last year that isn't always the case.

I think Barron will play regardless of who is drafted. It isn't like Bince and Bostic were burning it up in coverage.

Keep in mind with Jesse James and Fort probably canceling out Mont and Nelson, they should still be in play for a third round comp for Bell.

In the event Houston is signed, that wouldn't effect the formula either.

As if plucking a DB off a team with the worst pass defense in the NFL wasn't enough, Tombert has to one up that and sign a player off a team with one of the worst run defenses in the NFL. Is that a SB I smell?

I swear to god we could sign the biggest free agent on the market and people would still *****.

Two-years, $12 million

Are we done yet?

The Rams initially released Barron in early March with the idea they could re-sign him in the open market.

He'll instead play behind Vince Williams in the middle of DC Keith Butler's modified version of the 4-3 defense.

30 in October, Barron's play plummeted last season and will need to be much better if he expects to compete for reps ahead of ILB Jon Bostic.

Mark Barron calls out his doubters on Twitter

The Los Angeles Rams had one of the worst run defenses in the NFL last season, ranking 28th in yards allowed. That falls on a number of players, from the linebackers to the defensive linemen, but a big portion of that blame was put on Alec Ogletree and Mark Barron.

-------------------------------

Ever since they lost Ryan Shazier to a tragic injury late during the 2017 season, the Steelers have yet to find a way to adequately replace him on the football field.

Barron, a former first-round pick of the Buccaneers, was cut by the Rams earlier this month.

Over the past four seasons, he averaged roughly 70 solo tackles, one sack, and one interception per season.

He ended his run with the Rams on a high note with strong performances in the playoffs and the Super Bowl

The signing of Barron, a very flawed player, should not prohibit the Steelers from drafting a linebacker at No. 20 if one of the top prospects -- like Devin Bush -- is available. He should not be viewed as a long-term solution. He graded out poorly by Pro Football Focus' metrics, getting labeled as "one of Los Angeles' liabilities defensively."

But if a linebacker isn't available at No. 20, the Steelers have given themselves a bit of cover by signing Barron.

I'm sure he's already better than Jason Worilds, Jarvis Jones, and Jarvis Durpee.

I get so tired of you bitching in every thread. You sound like a *****.

I'll take a wild guess here: 3M signing bonus,
- 2,5M base salary in 2019; cap hit = 4M
- 6,5M base salary in 2020; cap hit = 8M.

If cut in 2020 prior to start of the season it would be a 1,5M cap hit and 6,5M freed

dug this up from bleacherreport:
Alabama safety Mark Barron performed well in front of judging eyes. Barron is recovering from bilateral sports hernia surgery, but it didn't show. His 40-yard dash time of 4.53 is just fine for safeties, and he posted a 10'2" broad jump.
also, he was last listed at 230 pounds, 6'1" frame

athletic? Check
experience in coverage? check
size and strength? check

he is a good fail safe if we can't get either Devin

Two article that state how bad the Rams run defense was, how bad he is etc. Then you ask "are we done yet" .. I'm taking that you mean you think all their moves suck and you want them to stop making bad moves.

I only ever see your posts saying how everyone sucks etc. So no idea you weren't trying to be negative

I didn't think he was bitching, just asked a question regarding to the signing.

Good signing and at least very good insurance. I have to say our FO has been active this year.

any signing to improve the D is a move in the right direction. If they could somehow pull off Houston, too, I'd be like a kid on Xmas.
