A Football Life- Bill Cowher

True... but he sure did look like he’s quite happy living a life of relative anonymity in NYC.

Curious what team could actually be an attractive temptation for him.

I’d say the Steelers if Art Rooney fired Tomlin or opted not to renew his contract. A three year deal for Cowher while Ben is still playing would tempt him.

Tomlin doesn’t come close to the relationships Cowher had with his men on the sidelines.

Another team could the Green Bay Packers as I get the sense they might be the best team to fire their coach.

So now you're saying Tomlin is NOT a player's coach?

Cowher hates the amount of time coaching requires. He has grown children and now has grand children. There isn't a coaching job on the planet he would take IMHO. It isn't a money thing and it isn't really a location thing either. It's a life style thing.
And he's making a very nice amount for the minimal time he has to work

Tomlin doesn’t have good relations with some key players. Doesn’t he shun the term players coach. If he had their respect he would not have to discipline them as often as he does. Tomlin seems to change rules often, as such it’s harder to know what’s okay and what’s not.

Some coaches are just the type guys like to play hard for. Cowher was that type type of coach.

Although Cowher was not a top x’s and o’s coach, he did offer sideline coaching. That seems to be missing from Tomlin. During his tenure no team had a better record. That’s amazing if you look at who his quarterbacks were.

I hardly if ever seen Ben and Tomlin talk on the sidelines. That’s odd considering how long they know each other.

Who are the players he’s had to discipline? I recall 3. Bell, Bryant and Brown. In that order. Who are these other miscreants that are disrespectful of Tomlin? There hasn’t been one bit of shade by the players noted in any media report. Only your opinion that they disrespect him.

If you say Harrison, you just proved your hate Tomlin narrative again. Harrison, refused to be a team player. Felt like he could do more. He was given slack like any long time veteran would receive. History showed he didn’t have what he thought he did.

Well you mentioned three players. Temas with divas seldom win super bowls. The three you mentioned don't respect him enough. You can add other minor players. S Thomas, C Rainey , and Alameda Ta'amu come to mind. Heck Tomlin himself has been disciplined by the NFL Twice, once for wandering on the field, which looked like he knew what he was doing, and again for mouthing off to the officials. In my opinion, this put a target on the Steelers, refs are human. Tell them they suck, and some may hold a grudge or look for a call at a later date

Tomlin was dim witted enough to have separate rules for players on the same team. Some could play locker room games, other could not.

Cowher dealt with guys like Greg Lloyd, quite possibly the most violent and intimidating guy the Steelers had during his tenure. Outside of Eric Green who was out in 1994, after making the pro bowl in 1993 and 1993, I cant; recall Cowher have problems with his guys.

But since I got your attention, why doesn't Tomlin talk to Ben?

Where is the sideline coaching? The play charts?

How come every time the camera pans down on him ( usually at a key point in a game ) his mouth is not moving?

Terry Bradshaw thinks he's a cheer leader type. The OC and DC call the plays. I'm really not sure what Tomlin's value on game day is. He's prone make bad decisions on 3rd and 4th down, and deciding when to throw the red flag. Its his call in the end, he can see the stadium video board as well as anyone. Time management a weakness sin the past has not been a big problem this year, but situational football, and making changes that at needed remains an issues as does penalties. Teams with lots of penalties are a reflection upon the head coach, Ike. Why do the Steelers have so many of them?

Tomlin to me is best dealing with the media and staying out of the way on game day. Off the field, I think he's a fine guy to have a beer with.

We really have short memories and love to romanticize the past. It's not like Cowher ever coached a team that brawled amongst itself in the locker room with players using stools as weapons or anything...

who else cringed at the screaming lady during that few seconds they showed of the Denver AFCCG??

It was horrible. I have that game recorded and I cannot watch the original broadcast.

Stop eating lead based paint chips. They're bad for you.

I wish Kordell was not part of the Football life on Cowher. With O'Donnell the Steelers likely go to another super bowl. Rooney was too cheap to pay him.

Tomzack, Stewart, Graham, and Miller for years. Only a very good coach could win with these jokers. Maddox was just slightly better.

Agenda must be pushed, even though you can’t get your facts straight.

Bell was disciplined by the league publicly. We don’t know what his discipline was internally. Brown was disciplined internally and told to make a public apology. Bryant was disciplined publicly through suspension from Tomlin because it was against another player. None of these three players have bad mouth Tomlin, Colbert or the FO.

Chris Rainey and Ta’amu? Are you skipping your medications? Those two were arrested for non team related incidents, but rather domestic violence and DUI/fleeing the scene of an accident respectively. Neither of those publicly bad mouth Tomlin. Shamarko? Please give us the link detailing Tomlin disciplined him for anything close to those other five players. Oh he had him in the dog house because of poor play, not for breaking any team rules.

Tomlin disciplined by the league, mouthing off at the officials?.....lol yeah genius so have 3/4 of all the coaches in the league. “Anytime the camera pans down he isn’t saying anything”

“Why doesn’t he talk to Ben?” Hahahahaha!!! Idiocy can be fun for you.

Sideline coaching....”play charts”....you are freaking kidding me. Belichick doesn’t have play charts.....Rivera, Zimmer, OBrien, Quinn. Guess what genius those who do, call the plays. Reid, Payton, Gruden, Gase.....

And you say you watch games......clueless.

Penalties....since they have found a rhythm...I haven’t see as much penalties. The are leading their division, currently second in playoff seating.......you just throw out more BS because you can’t handle Tomlin is proving you a bigger fool than you are..

I wish Kordell was not part of the Football life on Cowher.

Why? He was a big part of the Cowher teams, like it or not. And how do you know "Tomlin doesn’t come close to the relationships Cowher had with his men on the sidelines."? They (the team) parrot what he says quite a bit and they've never had an even remotely negative thing to say about the guy. Tomlin certainly has his warts, but I think some of those guys would run through a wall for him. That's just my opinion. Jim Wexell leaves little tidbits here and there of what the guys think of (and are saying about) Tomlin.

As much as I liked/like Cowher, he stuck with Kordell as a srarting quarterback for 6 seasons.

IMO, his biggest mistake. It shouldn't have taken him nearly that long to realize he wasn't the answer.

Kordell only started 5 years. And didn't start but 5 games in one of those years. He was benched for Tomczak in 1996. Also when the owner opens a new stadium and says "I want this to be called the house that Kordell built" then you are going to give him an opportunity to start. Especially when he went 13-3 the year before and made it to the AFCC game.

Yes, Kordell was a part of Cowher teams. I didn't see O'Donnell, or Maddox speaking. They were part of Cowher teams too. I'd rather limit the players talking about Cowher to our better players. That is just me.

Cowher had an excellent relationship with his players. You can see it. Tomlin interacts with them far less on game day. A visible difference. Cowher also knew when to try a trick play. His instincts were better and he seldom lost with a lead. A better disciplinarian, I can't recall his teams leading the NFL in penalties.

As for Jim Wexell, a word to the wise. He's a two time DUI loser, and a complete brown nose for some players, that is how he gets his tidbits. Mike Florio caught him in a lie.

I agree. A mistake. Was it Cowher who did not want to replace Kordell or he GM? I did like Drew Brees a lot for that draft year... The problem with Kordell was he was a bad passer and very mistake prone. We had such a good team. Oh what could have been.

Jokers like Kent Graham put Kordrell on the bench. And Jim Miller. You could say Cowher tried different QB's, but in the end, Kordell was slightly better than Tomzack, Miller, or Graham. I do think O'Donnell was better than Stewart, but Rooney did not want to play him in free agency. With O'Donnell, we likely beat Denver in the AFC championship game and go to another super bowl.

When it was painfully clear Kordell wasn't the answer, Maddox took over. He was an upgrade until he got hurt.. Then we drafted Ben.

Obviously you forget Bam Morris selling weed. Barry Foster just sitting out games cause he was "injured". The Super Bowl video with Buckner, and Seals. Porter ejected pregame vs Cleveland. Harrison breaking his GFs phone. Cedric Wilson domestic violence.

I'll take Cowher any day over Tomlin and I think Tomlin is a pretty good coach.

I loved the Cowher Power era...

However there were alot of disappointments...and some great memories.....similar to the Noll era, and now with the Tomlin era..
Just the way it is folks..

We are fortunate fans to have these 3 men as our only head coaches for the past 50 years.
I am not complaining one bit!

Loved the show, I am just glad they didn't show the Cowher kiss on the sideline game with a certain QB...lol

I'm quite familiar with Jim Wexell, Joel, as I've been a subscriber over there for 10+ years. And I'm quite familiar with you and your nonsense as a non-subscriber over there through the years as well. Jim got sober a long time ago. And he made a mistake (re: that article you posted) and apologized for it. And that was what, 7 years ago?

You've got some nerve dogging Jim Wexell (while you used his message board for years), an author and sports journalist for decades who's always been fair and candid in his writings. He has access to a lot of people and many Pittsburgh sports legends. And he's also human.

One mistake, on a DUI. Shame on him. Bad judgment. A second putting people life's in jeopardy twice that is different. He didn't learn a thing. What if you family was on the road that day? I know some one who was killed by a drunk diver. You have some nerve defending that crap.

He's really for censorship on the site you refer to by the way. Lots of banned posters know the deal. Just disagree with him in football context, and it won't end well for you over the course of time. I suppose if you pay for his web site, he’ll tolerate it a bit more.

Jim was booted out of a radio show by loud mouth Mark Madden of all people, and exposed as a liar by Mike Florio. See the link I posted. Unless you know him personally you can't say if he's sober or not.

He's a fair writer, but like I said a brown nosed homer, who forwards a political agenda at times. A sports writer should not talk politics. Sorry Steelworth nothing I wrote above is false.
