Apparently we need another thread for Dri Archer.
Cope there is subsequent language about this that seem to limit the compensation in this instance. It seem he is limitied in how he can be designated as a franchise player and lowers his compensation.
The relevant line :
If such a player is redesignated as a Franchise Player for the League Year following the League Year in which he does not play, the player may be designated only under Section 2(a)(i) above, except that Draft Choice Compensation of only one first round draft selection and one third round draft selection shall be made with respect to such player in the event he signs with the New Club.
Full text for context:
Section 15. Signing Period for Franchise Players:
(a) In the event that a player who is designated and tendered as a Franchise Player has not signed a Player Contract with a Club by the Tuesday following the tenth week of the regular season, at 4:00pm New York time, the player shall be prohibited from playing football in the NFL for the remainder of that League Year, absent a showing to the Impartial Arbitrator of extreme Club or extreme personal hardship. The determination of the Impartial Arbitrator shall be made within five days of the application, and shall consider all information relating to such hardship submitted by such date. The determination of the Impartial Arbitrator shall be final and binding upon all parties.
(c) If any Franchise Player does not play in the NFL in a League Year, his Prior Team shall have the right to designate such player as a Franchise Player or a Transition Player the following League Year, if such designation is otherwise available to the Team, except that the applicable Tender must be made and any 120% Tender shall be measured from the Player’s Prior Year Salary. If such a player is designated as a Franchise Player for a third time, the terms of Section 2(b) above shall apply. If a Franchise Player who has sufficient Accrued Seasons to become an Unrestricted Free Agent is not designated as a Franchise Player or Transition Player for any League Year immediately following a League Year in which he does not play, then on the first day of that League Year, the player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent and is completely free to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with any Club, and any Club is completely free to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with such player, without penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to, Draft Choice Compensation between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period.
(b) Any Club that designates a player as a Franchise Player for the third time
shall, on the date the third such designation is made, be deemed to have tendered the
player a one-year NFL Player Contract for the greater of: (A) the average of the five
largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position (within the categories set forth in
Section 7(a) below) with the highest such average; (B) 120% of the average of the five
largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position (within the categories set forth in
Section 7(a) below) at which the player participated in the most plays during the prior
League Year; or (C) 144% of his Prior Year Salary. (By way of example, a kicker designated
as a Franchise Player for the third time in the 2014 League Year would have a
Required Tender equal to the greater of: (i) the average of the five largest 2013 Salaries
for quarterbacks; (ii) 120% of the average of the five largest 2013 Salaries for kickers; or
(iii) 144% of the player’s own 2013 Salary.)
That thread had more weight than he did. Another beauty was Randal El vs. Antonio Bryant at the Tribune site. That thing literally went on for years and years. I always wonder if that dude Crash posts here under a different name. Maybe he is Coach?Apparently we need another thread for Dri Archer.

a Franchise Player for the third time, any Club may designate such player as a Transition

And here is section 2B
oops Cope posted it.
Very confusing verbiage...
I don't know about Crowning anyone. It's pretty clear and by pretty clear I mean completely obvious that Bell and the Steelers are done with each other. Now going into the season I felt the Steelers would need to spend a 1 or a 2 on a RB next year. Barring an injury I don't feel that way anymore. Do you?
So the Archer thing was a gaslight. But it was for a point. Conner hasn't proven jack nor **** yet. Please tell me how one half of one season qualifies this kind of response from the guys on this board after years of crap about other Steeler players that flamed out. ESPECIALLY against those riff-raff teams! I mean c'mon.
i would say if Conner can repeat 90% percent of his stats in 3 of the 5 games against: Panthers, Chargers, Patriots, Jaguars and Saints then they have a no. 1 running back and no need for rd 1 or 2 RB pick.
If Conner gets f-ing stuffed in 3 of those 5 games, are you and everyone here gonna retract all of this... ****? And if Bell comes in and kicks some *** in the playoff game, are you and everyone else gonna --- maybe not kiss Bell's *** but damn close. And then recognize that you 1. you don't lose or gain a once in a decade talent overnight and 2. maybe upper management has motivations that are not in the interests of the players nor the product on the field?[/QUOT
I wouldn't worry about Conner at all.

I know, the lawyers will argue both sides on this one. I think future CBAs will get negotiated with 3 total tags upping to QB amount regardless of seasons played, but that will lead to more year long holdouts.
Ya know, the fans here seem to have been brain-washed quite a bit on Bell.
I mean if we're crowning Conner's ***, after half of one damn season, i ask you, tell me why didn't you crown Dri Archer's ***? He had a pre-season.
There is some major league smack talk goin on here after like, what, 8 games against the shittiest of teams: 2 Browns, a Shitcinnati, Falcons and a Bucaneer! I mean what-the-**** people? Why would you lionize one guy who's yet to prove anything and turn on another guy so goddamn quickly? Bell has been an all-pro for years now. He's proven. I get that his value would be diminished because he smokes ganga but.. what in the hell?!
When I saw Conner going into the tent, it scared me. If Bell doesn't come back, we're screwed if Conner gets hurt. Those other guys aren't close to being good enough.
Conner is fine. There was no need to use him anymore last night.

How many playoff games has Bell won for us exactly?
They would be forfeiting even more money than they do now. Why would it lead to more holdouts?
