In search of the real Mike Tomlin

Shades is a good coach but not a great coach. I can somewhat excuse losing to the Cheating Bastiges From New England, even though I hate it, but not to having such a bad record against teams with losing records, especially on the road. I worry a lot more about losing to the Browns in Cleveland than I do about losing to the Ravens at home.

You can think that way as a fan. I dont think you can think like that as a player or coach. You will be paralyzed. You have to look at what they do well and emulate it. You have to look at limitations and exploit. How many coaches do you think sit Malcolm Butler in the SB last year? I mean I hate these ******* as much of the rest of you. But if you lay defeat at the hands of them cheating all the time you are beat before you play.

Oh you don't discount their good play. You prepare to play them as best as you can. and then do a few extra things to safeguard just in case they are cheating. Change up some signals, etc.

Team like that you just simply have to put in extra work across the board.

Like the old saying goes it's "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt."

I agree whole heartedly and internal motivation shpuldnt be a problem. Thought the Steelers played them as tough as they could this season. The Pats are very good at situational ball. Something the Steelers could improve. Best thing to be against the Pats is physical, unafraid and disciplined.

Sums it up very well. He isnt a stiff. But he has some serious warts.

I dont think they cheated two years ago in the playoffs. Im not even sure if they cheated in the Tomlin era.

ARE you kidding me.................. It wasn't that long ago MIKE TOMLIN brought up the fact of listening to some football show for a crucial part of the game when playing at shitholegiletstaduium!!!! In his post game pressed he was adamantly MAD and talked of this happening a lot at Gillette stadium. He also indicated that the CHEATRIOTS haddn't had their headsets shut off as when there is a malfunction both teams are to have headsets turned off. AGAIN swept under the ******* rug as come Tuesday presser,....not a peep......no reporter brought it up and CMVLT was all hush hush.

CHEATRIOTS not cheating durring the Tomlin era..........would be like believing Bill Clinton never inhaled......................

If Shades wants to be great then let's go undefeated against losing teams this year and beat the Pats***** for a change. We probably play them more than any team not in their division. You KNOW what they're going to do. Find a way.
That's how you be great.

Hey Coach, read the article. Not the quote.

I have no problem with in game decisions, as I ran a spreadsheet, he is the most effective at getting us chances to score at the end of halves and games.

My problem with Tomlin is personnel decisions. Leaving Mitchell on the field, when Wilcox, in one game, was better than Mitchell all season. Not utilizing Harrison as a situational pass rusher, after showing he was capable and instrumental in sealing the KC victory. I also have problems with game planning and inablility to adjust in game or at half time, but injuries will hamstring that option once Shazier was no longer a factor, so I'm not going to kill him on that respect.

In contrast, Giving JuJu and Watt starting time early and expanding their roles as the season progressed were good personnel decision. As was Hilton's quick ascension from the PS to starting slot corner. So there are goods there as well.

No coach is perfect, but I would never view how he treats players, coaches, fans, media, personnel as a negative. Dude is a solid human being.

There is no asterisk on the loss. It doesn't say AFC championship loss to cheating sack of **** team. God I hope that isn't the teams mentality.

WE know it as a fact. Seems like youd cut some slack because of it.

Since we were ****** out of a win against them in the regular season, doesn't seem like 5he team thinks that way, at all.

Boy how we forget. Cowher won how many championships? Playoff wins/losses percentage? All those AFCC losses....

Point being, Chin was vilified at times on this board and I mean burn at the stake hatred. Tomlin not handling his players? I recall, several under Cowher....Bam, Eric Green, Santonio getting away with a lot, until the ax fell. As for Ben and his latest soap, he doing the same thing while under Cowher...can’t remember how many times he said he was injured when he wasn’t and vice versa. Chin would be curt as a lame duck politician when Ben did that. Plus he told Ben NOT to ride the Motorcycle on public streets until after his career was done. Ben did so anyway.

I think time has revealed some of the myths about Tomlin to be just that myths.

If there is any doubts look at Bryant's benching. And you know he had to sign off on his trade.

And then you think back how Deebo was a supposed favorite, as the selfies flew. But you didn't see him force him onto the field, quite the opposite. And again he had to sign off on his release.

No need to rehash his deficiencies they have been rehashed and covered.

I would like some improvements in those areas sure.

I do think the team has tried to minimize some deficiencies. And as we give Colbert credit, we have to give Tomlin his due there as well.

I liked the coaching turnover although I think it was short one OLber coach.

I also think a WR and ILber is still needed for depth.

Hoping to see one each come cutdowns.

Article over on the Depot says a beat writer in Philly thinks Kendricks could be had for a 5th (round pick, not whiskey ... lol). But, as they rightly point out, there's the issue of his cap hit.

He didnt seem to hold players very accountable. I think he's too buddy buddy with players.

Well said. The Chicago debacle and his stubbornness (seemingly, I can't say that is a fact) to leave some guys on the field who shouldn't be there had left a bad taste in my mouth, as well as our early exits from the playoffs, but who's the alternative when it really comes down to it? Tomlin is a damn solid coach, I just hope he learns from his mistakes. And yeah, Steelers fans have some pretty lofty expectations. Could you imagine being a Browns fan? *collective shudder*

Then you couldnt have possibly read the article

Unfortunately "that face" has had the ol' deer-in-the-headlights look on it a bit too often for my taste.

"They lost because the refs applied the fractal geometry of the NFL’s catch rule to a Pittsburgh touchdown and somehow proved that it never happened. But they also lost because Tomlin didn’t have any timeouts to stop the clock before the last play of the game. They lost because he forced Roethlisberger to improvise, and Roethlisberger meatballed a pass to a New England defensive back."

Yes, God knows Ben has never had any success in his career while being "forced to improvise." What a crock of ****.

I think he is a very good man, I think in many respects he is a very good coach. I'm pretty sure you could say the exact same things about a guy like Marvin Lewis. The thing is that coaches are measured by championships. He has every possible piece on offense and there has been a ton of investment on defense. And yet they have come up short the last two seasons when they seemingly had everything they needed. I'm sorry, but that says something. And then for all the accountability he continues to have a team that seems to shoot itself in the foot mentally and in the media.,

You make a valid point.

Tomlin is basically Marvin Lewis, except he's been coaching a team with consistently better talent. I've no doubt that if they'd traded places, the results would be just about the same, and some douchebag ESPN writer would be following Lewis around at the Pro Bowl instead.

EVERY year our players have to get better and I hold the same accountability to our coaches, including CMVLT.

No thanks. Kendrick is a 2 down player and is a liability in coverage.

He may be a players coach and a good man and no one says different. The fan base sees a coach that gets out coached more times than expected, he has a problem making decisions during the game turning into positive play, Tomlin has had tons of talent and yet does not have the Super Bowl appearances to reflect this. Odd how out of the Pittsburgh area and fan base he is looked at as the best by the sports media and TV announcers , so who is more blinded the fan base or the media? Watching the game has anyone seen Tomlin step up and get in any players face, players coach had Brown sending phone messages as you hear the coach addressing the team, maybe this players coach is not such a positive.

So, you think that talent just showed up on the doorstep and the respective coaches had nothing to do with the talent on the team?

all players should be giving warning of fines between weeks 14 till the end of the year for twitter & other social media if they post messages that are looking past teams and games, and give opponents extra motivation like how bell and i believe mitchell were posting and gave the jags no respect. 10 G fine.
