Steelers pick Edmunds in round one

There's a link on Twitter and Steelersdepot that says he missed only 5 tackles in 585 snaps. That's pretty good. We've had players miss that many tackles in 1 game lol.

Honestly, I don't follow the ACC as closely as other conferences, and I haven't seen a lot of this guy. I just don't like some of the stuff I'm reading about him, and to me, #28 overall sounds like a reach.

There do seem to be some conflicting tackling reports out there. I guess we're going to find out who's right soon enough.

Eh. Seems like a decent safe pick. Probably won't be a superstar but probably won't be a disappointment either. In musical terms, I doubt he'll be a Johnny Cash or a Waylon, but I think he will at least be a David Allen Coe.

I expect a thousand 'bust' threads about him in '18 and people coming around and enjoying his play in'19. I can't back that up with anything. It's just a prediction. And, as all NFL hipsters say, 'The NFL draft is a crapshoot.'

At least I didn't punch a hole in my wall when I heard the pick. **** you Lawrence Timmons. **** you still.

.

I really dig Edmunds. I would be happier if it in the middle of round two... but if he turns into a stud player, who cares. The point is... they must REALLY like the player!

I've watched a number of the sites compiling combine and pro day stats. The explosion numbers for Edmunds are elite... truly. His pSPARQ score is #3 of out all 246 DB's (safeties and cornerbacks included) tested coming out of college in 2018. Elite athleticism... AND... a instinctual football player.

I am curious however, what are his change of direction numbers? Shuttle? 3-cone?

The NFL seemed to agree because Edmunds was in the green room. They only invite guys that have a consensus 1st round grade. No, i do not believe he was just there with his brother. If he was, then he would have left when his bro was picked. Plus, that was not a suit a guy buys just to sit in a green room off camera.

This is the bit that makes the most sense to me. There was obviously enough buzz about him to invite him to the draft.

Plus the guys between 15-50 are a wash so while some will view a lot of picks late 1st and early 2nd as reaches that just highlights the parity in talent for those picks. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Also Edmunds had shoulder surgery at the end of last year and played hurt for much of it. By all accounts the brothers are amazing people, and as long as he's healthy I think he's going to be a great pick up.

I'm pleased we went DB - we need someone that can cover TEs. It's clear that Davis struggles with that and we needed to get better there.

“B. Personally I would take Edmunds in the 1st round. But what I keep reading is he’s a 3rd or 4th round pick. This would again give the Steelers their top three perceived needs and make it a successful draft by needs standpoint.”

I am not disappointed. If you watch the tape Terrell is the more instinctive football player of the Edmunds brothers. Tremaine is a freak athletically but look at Terrell’s chart.

He’s a top tier athlete himself.

I think he will play a Rover type position for us. ILB/S and learn from Burnett who really has done a nice job with the Packers in that role.

Well it's great to see that someone valued him. Great catch!

What is there not to like? The Steelers looked long and hard and identified Edmunds as their highest ranked safety - and overall player - at #28. Welcome to the Burgh Terrell!

With his skill set and versatility, Edmunds is a great fit for the current NFL. Teams like interchangeable safeties who can execute both strong and free safety. Some schemes require that given they like to flip responsibilities pre-snap to make it hard for quarterbacks to know where defenders will move and what they will be responsible for. Edmunds is very well-rounded with the ability to play both strong and free safety.

In the ground game, Edmunds is a tough defender. He is fast coming downhill and is a good tackler. Edmunds reads plays quickly and fires down on backs without hesitation. He is an asset in the ground game with the ability to be the eighth man in the box.

In pass coverage, Edmunds is a talented player. He shows an impressive ability to run with receivers downfield and maintain close coverage. Few defenders with a strong-safety build can run with receivers like Edmunds can. He lines up against slot receivers and runs the route while also running with them downfield. In zone coverage, Edmunds covers a lot of ground and picks up targets coming into his area. He breaks on the ball quickly and tracks the ball well downfield. Edmunds has the ball skills to break passes up and intercept the ball.

Edmunds is not a true single-high free safety to be the deep center fielder. He did that somewhat in college, but that is not his natural fit. A team could get away with Edmunds being deep over the top, but he shouldn't do that constantly. Edmunds is a tight player who can have issues redirecting, and that shows up when he's playing deep free safety. Late cuts and breaks by receivers can cause him to give up late separation when running with them downfield. Occasionally, Edmunds can take some missed steps in coverage. He is a really good player, but the stiffness and missed steps can cause him to give up some plays. Edmunds fits very well as a strong safety playing zone coverage in the short part of the field or lining up in man on tight ends or slot receivers.

Edmunds is an ideal strong safety for the current NFL. He is a real asset in pass coverage while also being a tough run defender. Multiple team sources see Edmunds as a secure second-rounder, and some believe he will go high in the second round. I think Edmunds is going to become one of the top strong safeties in the league and a Pro Bowler.

All the stories this am are about Shazier and his taking the podium. Almost nothing about our first pick. Who he is. What has he done? Where does he fit in? Opinions overall are lacking...except here. I’m not 100% about it, but he’s a Steeler and here’s to him being great!
Make room on the Terrell Edmunds “bandwagon”, I need to jump up. Welcome to the Black and Gold kid!

First, we need to get over the initial shock that the Steelers thought more highly of Edmunds than all three of the safeties everyone's been talking about - Reid, Harrison and Bates.

Once we wrap our heads around that, we can start looking at Edmunds for the player he is. They certainly did a great job keeping this under wraps.

How come there are all these conflicting reports. I just read something that said he missed a ridiculously small amount of tackles last year and you say he tackles ******.

The Steelers select Terrell Edmunds, who missed only 5 tackles across 585 snaps in 2017 #NFLDraft

here is one of coaches favorite places to go Walterfootball's eval

they had him rated before Reid

Round 1-3? Wow Walter went out on a limb there. No one here had Edmunds rated over top safeties disused. Which web site had him in round one without a range to round three?

Was Terrell Edmonds even in Mayock’s top 100?

I did say I liked him for round 3.

This year's draft lead up with mocks and expert opinions had the biggest disparity between players and the most scattered projections I've ever seen in my life. I was telling someone last night before the draft that I saw at least 5 players that I'd seen projected to go in the 1st Round in one mock and either the late 2nd or 3rd Round in another mock, just from this week alone. That tells me that nobody has a good grasp of which players rank above others at their positions this year. I don't ever remember seeing guys projected in both the 1st and 3rd Round but they sure were this year.

I've never seen the guy play a snap, so I'll defer to Colbert and co. I get the talking heads are just that, but they keep talking about how teams like the cheatriots value versatility, this Edmunds seems to have this, FS, SS, like others have said, he likes to hit and play downhill, I wonder if he plays a Shazier type role in sub packages on 3rd down. Drafting 28 sucks, they got someone who they think can help.

I like the fact they went with athleticism and physical tools over production this time, guys like Jones who produced in college but lack the athletic skills have burned them in the past

Maybe they can move up in the 2rd round with that extra 3rd round pick and get Malik Jefferson, Christian Kirk, or James Washington earlier in the 2nd....

Typical Steeler safe/solid late first round pick...

Tomlin sure does like his Virginia boys...doesn't he?

I can accept it and give the kid/Steelers a chance...I think they see something "extra" in him which will allow them to insert unique packages for him..

I had a feling we would "reach" on the pick the way the draft unfolded...
I was actually thinking the would "reach" for Hubbard out of Ohio St there, which I hope they get in round 2.

According to Wexell the steelers thought they had a deal in place to trade up and take Evans

FeDerius Terrell Edmunds is an elite athlete and hey ladies, his hands are 10 1/2 inches which is freakishly large for a guy 6 ft tall.

Here's his elite measurables. Look at thos %tiles compared to other safeties in this draft. He has long arms, huge hands, fast, and explosive

great ahtlete...can he play?
i saw a guy with poor instincts and a step slow.

Tomlin sucks

Not sure if this is a big reach, more like a slight one. As if he was projected by some to be high two, not of a huge difference between low 1.

So let me look at his positives.

*Versatile started as a Corner. FS, and a Rover
*Solid tackler
* Speedy can recover if burnt
* Like Watt came from a athletic family.
*Written in a report he was a natural leader and handled playcalling similar to Burnett.
*Checked off all the boxes for what the Steelers were looking for
*Excellent in zone coverage -Gronk says hi

I wouldn't put him on a slot WR, as that looks like a potential weakness.

I think this kid is a solid safe prospect...

What round was AB taken? In the end, it doesn't matter if you are selected in Round 1 or 6 to be a star/impact player. Welcome to the Steelers!

I haven't heard of this guy. But VT did have a very solid defense in 2017. Safety is definitely a need and I would imagine Edmunds will start. If he is a true talent, I see him stepping right in and making a positive impact.
