2017 NFL Draft thread

Tankersly with our next pick.. book it.

This board need coach, nothing better than feeling better he's gonna sleep good tonight sweet dream buddy. Now if we can only get baker!!

None of that **** matters if he can't hang physically with the big boys, and I don't think he can. We'll find out. This is the AFC North. Big boys. Bad *****. We need to be drafting big boys up front. Long arms and golly good attitude doesn't mean ****.

That is a hard one to call. It is one of the things I have thought about really digging deep into, checking what traits actually end up being more significant for edge rushers. I mean, take a look at Watt. He is 6042-252 pounds. He has long arms and massively huge hands (traits of a big frame). Long kid. He ran the forty at 4.69, not so sure that matters. His bench was 21, that has always been a sore spot with me, wanted bigger numbers. VJ was 37". Broad jump of 10'07". His shuttle was 4.13. Cone was 6.79. Those are elite numbers. How does he compare to some of the better pass rushers in the league when they came out?

Von Miller was 6025-246 pounds. He ran a 4.53, benched 21 times, VJ of 37", BJ of 10'06", shuttle of 4.06 with a cone of 6.70. Watt is very close in a lot of areas.
Clay Matthews was 6031-240 pounds. He ran a 4.67, benched 23 times, 35.5" VJ, BJ of 10'01", shuttle of 4.18 with a cone of 6.90. It is why he has drawn a lot of Matthews comparisons. On the hoof, they are almost identical.
Shane Ray is a guy a lot of people wanted, still do, when Dupree was drafted. He is 6025-245 pounds. Hr ran a 4.68, benched 21 times, 33" VJ, 10'00" BJ, 4.58 shuttle, and 7.60 cone. Not even close to the athleticism and length of Watt.

I had Watt as a late second, early third based on his film and I felt it would take him a year before you even thought about starting him. But, in working out since the season ended, in the meetings with coaches, in the things he has said and done to prepare, dude added 10 pounds of muscle by the combine, in the film room, he knows all his assignments and spews football like the coach is in his ear, teammates love the guy, coaches do as well, it is all those intangibles that has created a steady rise up draft boards.

I was shocked Green Bay traded away from him, but I guess if you have Matthews and just signed Nick Perry to a healthy deal, a first round edge rusher isn't as attractive. I think he will be fine. You also have to recognize how aware he is of things happening around him in the game. How he sees QBs loading up and gets off the ground to bat passes. How he can drop and cover and recognizes guys coming into his area. How he goes from speed to the edge to the speed/bull and then the swim or spin. Dude just takes what he learns and puts it on the field. Never played defense prior to 2 seasons ago. Never. Actually had to call JJ and ask if he thought moving from TE to LB was a good move for him, after the talk and the decision, was all in. His rise to become the player he is right now is unreal. I mean, 2 years and he flashes all that technique? I don't want to wait 2 years on a guy to impact, but when Watt gets there, it will probably be a fun ride.

I hope not. He isn't great in man coverage, kind of stiff in his movements. He opens or bails on the snap with his back almost fully to the WR a lot and that is because he doesn't have great hips or feet. He can still have faster WRs run right by him and any move that causes him to break stride is a change for a WR to get on top of him and run away from him. He plays a lot of zone. He isn't overly agile or athletic. He runs well and is tall, but outside of that, not that impressed.

Thing I like about this is TJ will have time to learn the position. He has nothing but upside. Coaches will have time to develop him. We can use him this year in obvious passing downs here and there.

Wasn't this going to be the case for just about any edge defender available to the Steelers? I just don't think they were going to draft a guy who was going to step in and play every down. Watt is going to get a lot of snaps this year even if he has work to do. Harrison is another year older and Moats/Chixkillo really don't offer much. I'm really looking forward to having this guy on our team and as you pointed out, he made a great transition in college and you hope that path continues in the NFL.

You are looking forward to seeing him get schooled by our opponents as he "develops"? Watching his youthful exuberance drain rapidly as he realizes he isn't his brother and the NFL starters abuse him play after play?

Sweet dreams.

you really need to use the quote button,,, lol

Watt is only 20 years old. He will improve everything that he already possesses.

Yeah and jarvis was like 23 or 4.
From Jarvis' draft profile:
BOTTOM LINE The Peach State native suffered a neck injury his true freshman year at USC, but returned home when cleared by Georgia doctors; the consensus All-American impressed scouts in 2011 with his ability to rush the passer and he didn't let up in 2012, leading the nation in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles. Jones also showed the versatility to play the run and get the job done in coverage. He enters the NFL with some questions with his struggles disengaging at the point of attack and limited length and growth potential, but the production speaks for itself and, as Bruce Irvin reminded us last April, pass rushers don't last long on draft day. Whether or not he would be able to fit in a 4-3 defense like Irvin would depend on how he is used, but he would fit best as a pass rush OLB in a 3-4 like in college.

Watt can also play Inside in sub packages...JIm Wexell asked Colbert about taking another OLB, and Colbert said that he could (Lawson, Rivers, Walker). Moats is also old...remember that.

Do we pick up a QB in this draft? Curious with Ben's retirement talk in the off season and we all know Landry Jones is not a franchise type of QB. Davis Webb, seems to be in the same mold as Ben albeit not in his league obviously. Just a thought...

I think if these guys were available later in the draft, then sure, we should nab one. However, I don't think we should waste any of our top 100 picks on any of these QB's.

I think the first round fell rather nicely for the Steelers as they had options but in the end took the last remaining elite pas rusher. I think TJ fits nicely with the defense, team and city. Looking forward to round two as I see some decent value left at S and CB. We have a ways to go before we draft but I feel there's enough talent left that someone will drop. I wouldn't try to get back in the mix unless DB's start flying off the board.

My highlights from last night:

--Roger getting booed all night
--The fake smiles of the Browns picks. The disappointment came through on camera despite their best attempts to smile through it and say the right things
--Eagles fans booing at their pick, even as the guy was on stage holding up the jersey
--Suzy Kolber--lookin' good, gurl! I wanted to go all Joe Namath on my TV. I'll tell ya again, she just needs one night with me.
--Pleased with the Steelers pick

The only downside for me is that I missed the new episode of Big Bang Theory. Otherwise a good night.

and others.

Just too many DBs to list. I think we can find one or two.

I just wanted to point this out, here is the list of guys that could/should have been in play after round one for us. I listed guys I had after the first that I thought would be there in rounds 2/3/4. I did not list everyone, but a lot of them. I had both Sutton and Allen in that list, so to get one in the 3rd is great, to find one in the 3rd and the other in the 5th is real value.

Not really. When I state 2 years away, I mean that I don't expect him to start this year or next. I feel that Watt needs a year to continue to add strength and power, to fill out that frame. Then, like Chickillo, once you get to your fighting weight, you have to learn how to play at that weight. You are not reinventing the wheel, but you still have to adjust to being a little bigger, maybe not bending as well, having better power. And, he needs to continue to develop traits. I don't think you have that wait with guys like Lawson or Willis. They are already there from a body stand point. So is Rivers. They just have to adjust to the game, so the move to give you quality minutes should be quicker. I don't think the end results are the same. I think Watt is going to be much better than they are because his athletic traits, work ethic, ability to take coaching and put it on the field is just better. So, while it might take him a little longer to be that finished product, I think the end result will be better.

And, I don't expect rookies to impact, but I do think that being ready in Y2 is a solid ask, especially for your first round guy. If I think they need another year, I ding them a little. It is just how I grade. But, the edge rushers were flying off the board in the 20s, I agree they should have gotten their guy and I have no issue with Watt as a player.

TMC, what is your view on Scott Orndoff? He does not appear to be that bad. Maybe the competition he faced was not that good but he seems pretty decent from the footage I have watched on him.

Orndoff is a solid blocker who helped contribute in Pitt's rush offense. This is what is going to earn him a spot on the team. Although he averaged 18.8 and 16.5 yards per reception over the past two years, he's not a burner by any means. He's sneaky fast, but is really going to have to refine his route running if he wants to get open on a consistent basis in the NFL. He will make the spectacular catch, but drop the easy one, which was extremely frustrating. I think he has a chance to stick as a No. 3 tight end because of his ability as a blocker and upside to develop into a capable receiver. With virtually no depth at the position, Orndoff chose a good team to sign with.

Will Orndoff make DJ expendable?
