None of that **** matters if he can't hang physically with the big boys, and I don't think he can. We'll find out. This is the AFC North. Big boys. Bad *****. We need to be drafting big boys up front. Long arms and golly good attitude doesn't mean ****.
That is a hard one to call. It is one of the things I have thought about really digging deep into, checking what traits actually end up being more significant for edge rushers. I mean, take a look at Watt. He is 6042-252 pounds. He has long arms and massively huge hands (traits of a big frame). Long kid. He ran the forty at 4.69, not so sure that matters. His bench was 21, that has always been a sore spot with me, wanted bigger numbers. VJ was 37". Broad jump of 10'07". His shuttle was 4.13. Cone was 6.79. Those are elite numbers. How does he compare to some of the better pass rushers in the league when they came out?
Von Miller was 6025-246 pounds. He ran a 4.53, benched 21 times, VJ of 37", BJ of 10'06", shuttle of 4.06 with a cone of 6.70. Watt is very close in a lot of areas.
Clay Matthews was 6031-240 pounds. He ran a 4.67, benched 23 times, 35.5" VJ, BJ of 10'01", shuttle of 4.18 with a cone of 6.90. It is why he has drawn a lot of Matthews comparisons. On the hoof, they are almost identical.
Shane Ray is a guy a lot of people wanted, still do, when Dupree was drafted. He is 6025-245 pounds. Hr ran a 4.68, benched 21 times, 33" VJ, 10'00" BJ, 4.58 shuttle, and 7.60 cone. Not even close to the athleticism and length of Watt.
I had Watt as a late second, early third based on his film and I felt it would take him a year before you even thought about starting him. But, in working out since the season ended, in the meetings with coaches, in the things he has said and done to prepare, dude added 10 pounds of muscle by the combine, in the film room, he knows all his assignments and spews football like the coach is in his ear, teammates love the guy, coaches do as well, it is all those intangibles that has created a steady rise up draft boards.
I was shocked Green Bay traded away from him, but I guess if you have Matthews and just signed Nick Perry to a healthy deal, a first round edge rusher isn't as attractive. I think he will be fine. You also have to recognize how aware he is of things happening around him in the game. How he sees QBs loading up and gets off the ground to bat passes. How he can drop and cover and recognizes guys coming into his area. How he goes from speed to the edge to the speed/bull and then the swim or spin. Dude just takes what he learns and puts it on the field. Never played defense prior to 2 seasons ago. Never. Actually had to call JJ and ask if he thought moving from TE to LB was a good move for him, after the talk and the decision, was all in. His rise to become the player he is right now is unreal. I mean, 2 years and he flashes all that technique? I don't want to wait 2 years on a guy to impact, but when Watt gets there, it will probably be a fun ride.
