IMO we had the talent to play defense like you have to vs NE,

“We had a good game plan going in there, and they played zone,” Hogan explained. “And after that, after we kind of knew what they were doing, we just … (offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels) was calling good plays, and Tom was able to find the open guys.”

They saw we were playing zone, probably booked all their hotels at halftime and Brady was relaxed on the bench the entire game. Usually he's up throwing when he's not on the field. There was never a doubt in their mind that they weren't winning.

I had no doubt either after watching about 10 minutes of that game plan on both sides of the ball.

it seemed clear to me, beforehand, that our D going into that game was better than the D in the last game. They did not play like it.

I don't think we do. Starting 3 rookies? Granted the plan stunk and needs explained but we need more experience and more talent on defense.

By the time the AFCCG rolls around, there are no more rookies.

Dudes have played and game-planned for more than a season by then.

Steelers have more talent on defense than the Ravens, but the Ravens play NE tough. Why? They bump the WRs and don't let Brady have the easy throws. That's it.

Heck, I picked up on it the very first play of the game when they hit Bennett for 12 yards....then Edelman for 40 on the next play after. Couldn't believe it. Oh, and another thing...if you remember that first drive Malcolm Mitchell dropped that 3rd down pass. He didn't have another reception the entire night. That's sending a signal to your receivers.

After 16 weeks or regular season games, and 2 PO games, they are not really Rookies anymore.

I couldn't believe it when I saw them rushing three and playing way off the ball on the opening drive.

I can't help but wonder if Tomlin and Butler outsmarted themselves by thinking they would throw something at Brady for which he hadn't prepared. Why they thought it would work, who knows?

It also adds credence to the WWE aspect of a scripted game.

My main complaint is that Shazier is our fastest LB. LT is bigger and, probably, stronger. Yet, I saw LT dropping into coverage more with Shaz blitzing in the middle. I think they'd have more success the other way around.

I thought the same thing. Before the game I said they should rush Deebo and Timmdong and leave Shazier and Dupree in coverage since they're faster.

I would have rushed Deebo and Dupree, as Dupree is fast enough and mean enough to knock T*m the **** out.

Shazier and Mitchell can help with coverage and Timmons can shore up run-stopping and occasionally blitz the middle.

Timmons should sometimes be called upon to cover a middle zone with a TE coming over. Sure he'll lose that battle, but if Dupree is bringing the heat on FG T*m it's a risk you can take now and then.

Ben is a badass! How anyone can blame him for putting balls into receivers hands, who drop them is beyond me. How about blaming Tomlin and the coaching staff. They suck!

You mean like the stupid 1st quarter throw that should have been a pick? Or the out to Rogers after the two stupid goal line runs(what happened to the QB sneak?) that a junior high QB could have completed, but Ben under NO pressure manages to make uncatchable?

He was just about as ****** as the rest.

You really are ******* retarded. How about the perfect throw to Coates that would have led to at least a FG. The 2 TD throws that were dropped by Hamilton. The TD called back because Hamilton ran out of the back of the EZ. You do realize that Haley called the plays at the goal line or does that not fit your narrative? Even if Ben made a perfect throw Rogers is not reaching the EZ. But don;t let the facts stand in the way of your never ending drivel.

This team does not have the talent to beat NE. We need a dominant pass rusher( no disrespect to Heyward). We need a JJ watts type guy, I don't care if we have to dump Green or cut whomever to make cap room.

If any big name is available in free agency PAY THEM and plug in the missing piece. Drafting or signing a shutdown type corner would be nice as well, but Brady will play another 2-3 years and the only way to beat him is to beat him up.

We need to think of the Pats the way the Ravens think of the Steelers and build with that mindset.

Haley called the plays there because Ben says so.....when things go well Ben makes sure to tell us he called the plays.

It's not a narrative idiot, I've seen this movie before.

If the Steelers huddle up Haley is calling the plays, if you see Ben calling the play at the line, Ben is calling the plays. Not that hard to figure out libtard. But that doesn't fit your little narrative. The only movie you have seen is the fiction in your head.

Dulac: Steelers Stopped Using Man Coverage In NE Because It Didn’t Work

BY MATTHEW MARCZI JANUARY 25, 2017 AT 07:00 AM

As we all know, whenever the Pittsburgh Steelers lose a game, they have the great luxury of having an endless resource of prime defensive coordinator minds to supply them with the ways that they can fix all of their problems. Message boards all across the internet, not to mention Steelers bars around the world—anywhere two Steelers fans are, really—can play host to these insightful minds who know better than the coaching staff. Myself included, of course.

As we all know, the reason that the Steelers lost to the Patriots on Sunday is because they were unwilling to check New England’s wide receivers in man coverage, preferring to stay in their comfort zone, literally, with the zone coverages that they have used for the bulk of the season.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, however, the season that the Steelers shied away from man coverage against the Patriots is because it didn’t work. He Tweeted last night that the defense “went to man coverage 3 times and got burned each time by Brady. Stopped doing it after that”, according to a team source.

He added that the “biggest culprit in man coverage was nickel back William Gay, who struggled [with Julian Edelman]”. So if you were looking for an answer as to why the Steelers didn’t do what they obviously needed to do in order to win the game, the answer is that they tried to do that and it failed spectacularly each time that they tried.

Now, that doesn’t mean that change is not coming. The Steelers have drafted cornerbacks in the top two rounds of the past two drafts who theoretically have the skill set to consistently engage in man coverage, with Artie Burns their first-round draft pick in 2016 and Senquez Golson, who has been on injured reserve the past two years a second-round pick in 2015, who would inherit Gay’s slot role should he take the field.

Burns, Cockrell, Davis all bigger guys that can press and be in their face at the LOS. Harrison and Dupree can both rush the passer, and Timmons and Shazier can blitz very well, as can Davis.
Yet we didn't even attempt to play that way, why????? We looked like we were running that ******* Tampa 2.
Hogan after the game said we knew what they'd be running

How you lost is important. Our coaches seem to lack the diversity of play calling. This problem falls squarely on Tomlin who delegates to his OC and DC, and does not appear to call plays.

3 times, they tried it 3 times and then abandoned it. I would like to know what they prepared for in practice all week and worked on all week in practice. I am not buying William Gay could not run with any of the NE receivers. None of them are sub 4.4 guys. If we couldn't go man/man with the Pats receivers it is because we did not prepare for it. Christ, it's not like they have Julio Jones.

Well expecting Gay to be able to cover Edleman is dumb, you put your best guy on their best guy.
So they tried 3 out of how many plays and decided that's not working, but the 50 or so plays of zone worked so well they stuck with that?
Si Dulac says they tried man, but in another article it says to go man on man would be a total over haul? Which is it?

Yeah we might still get our *** beat still, but dropping your best pass rushers into coverage, and one of them being 39, is dumb either way. If you want the extra guy in coverage, then bring another db in.

Decastro said NE totally switched their defense, once Bell was out, but ours requires a total over haul?

Mitchell said they haven't seen the flea flicker from them before, yet they just ran that play vs Baltimore 6 weeks ago, Dupree said they weren't prepared for the no huddle quick pace offense. Have any of our coaches or players watched any game film on NE?

It's not just not the fact we didn't play man, we let their WR's have a clean free release off the LOS, the play they talk about Gay getting beat on, he lined 5 yards off Edleman, and gave him a free release, and that just turned into a foot race.

The lack of pressure, or even attempted pressure was pathetic, I know some people consider it a blitz when we sent a 4th guy, when we lined up 3 on the line, but that's not a blitz, it's still 4 vs 5, and 6 when they kept a back into block. There was no attempt to disguise anything. It was the most vanilla defense, vs a guy you absolutely cannot run be vanilla against.

Hogan after the game said we knew what they'd be running

Brian Billick said the Pats ran 4 wide and 1 RB 20 times or twice their average and that it was designed to confuse a young secondary. Said they move and pick a lot with the wideouts and that Brady recognizes the mismatches and releases so fast it is really difficult to defense.

So let me get this straight. Our quarterback, a 13 year veteran, and 2x Super Bowl champion, takes the call from the coach and is not allowed to make a change at the line? He is so handcuffed, apparently, that he can't call an audible? Especially if he really didn't like the play? Look, I love Ben, but this nonsense that Ben only calls the plays that are called from the coach and can't change anything up is just that: nonsense. The coach calls what he feels will work, he doesn't know what the ******* defense is gonna trot out there(unless you're the patriots***). It's up to Ben to change things up accordingly.

That's another thing.

I know a lot of us Steelers fans were confident going into that game, but in hindsight, it was naive of us to think that a secondary comprising two rookies had much of a chance to slow down that offense in a game of that magnitude.

Both Davis and Burns were exposed badly, but they showed a lot of promise in their rookie seasons. Hopefully, the Patriots game is something they both learn and build from.

Malcolm Butler was a rookie nobody who won the SB by playing tight man vs the Seahawks. The Pats saw the play on tape and had Butler practice jumping that quick slant.

I guess the Pats should have just sat back and said, Oh well, Butler is a rookie who can't possibly handle that. Let's just hope they don;t call slant plays.

The steeler defense has far more talent than the Pats. Burns and Davis are better athletes than anybody in the Pats secondary. Does anybody think Belickeck would have just played zone with the steelers players?
