2016 NFL Draft

Didn't they make all cut blocks against the rules or did they not make that change?

I don't think that rule made it in. It's long overdue but the safety rules (from my perspective) always tend to have a pro-passing game slant to them. Notice that helmet to helmet isn't really discussed with regard to running backs or defensive players. Just receivers and quarterbacks. If you ban cut blocking, it's going to be tough on the smaller running backs to pick up the blitz. That means more hits on the QB, and Goodell just can't have that.

The Chop (or Cut) block is now totally illegal. Passed the rule this year.

Cut blocking and chop blocking are not the same. Cut blocking is still legal.

Chops involve combination blocks. But one on one, you can still block below the waist.

I see the difference. But man, one on one, if you can't avoid that guy going low, you have some cement feet. The blocks McLendon had and McCullers has issues with and Casey used to get pissed about were the chop blocks.

It's harder than you think. Remember that tripping game kids played when you were in middle school. The guy walking behind you kicks your right foot left so you trip over your left ankle. It doesn't take much to take a guy down who's eyes are focused on the ball carrier. That's why you need exceptional athletes on the line.

Most running plays in the spread are sliding line (zone blocking) plays. Which is to say, the offensive linemen you're trying to beat are "sliding" or running parallel to the line of scrimmage. In those cases, it gets real easy to cut a DL who doesn't have great feet. McClendon and McCullers don't. But it's more than just that. We're a 1 gap line now. Penetrators. The short burst needed to play that scheme was absent in the middle prior to Hargrave. He'll dive in like Sapp and get after the QB. The job of linebacker will be harder, but then our pass rush won't be so dependent on outside pressure. We won't need an edge beast as much.

Great explanation. Thank you!

A cut block is one player blocking you at the knees.

A chop block is a player cutting you while you are already engaged with another blocker. It takes 2 opponents to execute a chop

when Brown was taken, NO ONE knew who the **** he was. NO ONE. JAG from a small school with very little realistic chance of making an NFL roster... which is why he was picked in the 6th ******* round.

some of you ************* need to chill.

Not to stick up for Clete but he was responding to someone's claim about trading out of drafting Brown in a fantasy draft, not the actual draft when we took him in the 6th.

"Let me explain it this way.. say you're hell bent on picking Antonio Brown in your fantasy football draft.. do you trade down and hope he's still there or do you take your guy and be quick about it?"

So to go off on him by saying no one knew Brown when he was drafted is completely irrelevant as to why Brown's name was even brought up in the first place. It was about fantasy drafts, not the real draft.

Bump. Go to page 13. Funny to read the reactions to the Burns pick.

**** it, Artie Burns is a ******* reach. Why not wait for a damn phone call? **** YOU COLBERT

**** you Colbert, now Denver traded with the seahawks. Why the **** didn't you take that trade? oh yeah because you didn't wait a ******* second to reach for Burns

and that's why I post at SN from my home and don't have a job at the NFL. In my defense it was the heat of the moment LOL

Classic everyone crying over the pick.......

Congrats to Artie Burns.....Burning in the Burgh......

In re-reading, there were indeed many people screwed the pooch with the Burns selection as predicted.....luckily they were all internet posters instead of guys working for the Steelers lol. That's the beauty of the draft....ya just never know. The instantaneous, over the top reactions are the best though!

Thank god I must have been pretty well hammed up by the time Burns was drafted otherwise I'd probably be eating some crow about now. I have said it repeatedly I was not happy with the pick, I would have traded with Denver, and so far I look wrong. And I am VERY happy about it.

Otty Bones!!!

I don't know why, but I like to amuse myself by pronouncing his name with a Barbara Walters-like speech impediment.

Somehow I missed posting in this thread at all as it happened... that's how smart I am

Great read!

bungles take..........

**** sucking mother *******

mother *******

*************

Mother *******

how many "*************" already? I think I counted 4

God I'm gonna be pissed if its Burns

**** artie burns

I'm disgusted, what a ******* letdown.

******* Colbert, you stupid ************. Piss on your mother's ******* grave

and the winner is

Good pick. Thank God.

In my defense.

1. My "*************" was in response to Bungles taking Jackson.
2. I didn't know much about artie burns,, but talking heads all said he was "raw"

same here, I saw him as a low floor / high ceiling player and that was not what we needed for the final years with Ben. Love to be so ************* wrong

I hate the hypothetical "we should have traded down" responses. It's just a lazy fallback.

In my defense they could have drafted a reincarnation of Mel Blount and I would have not like the pick at that time.....

I gotta say, I'm pretty damn pleased with our 2nd and 3rd round picks as well!

As I said in my original posts in this thread, at this stage of my life I'm too lazy to do much research on guys so if I haven't watched them much in college I tend to take a wait and see approach on basically every pick.
