The head coach search

What if McCarthy is hired as Asst HC, QB development?

Hire Shula as HC, SteelerChasser as OC, retain Ayahuasca A-Ron for one more season, and insist the McCarthy and Rodgers develop Howard just like Rodgers and Love were developed over 3 seasons in Green Bay.

Shula has not been a HC, Steelchasser has never been OC and McCarthy gets to stay at home, advise and mentor the young guys from within.
I will be in favor and accept that confluence.
However, as I mentioned, I don’t think Shula is coming here in 1 million years..
But I could be wrong. It has happened once before.

Last three or four years, they had some talent, but certainly not enough if you’re honest with yourself to field even a playoff type football team… which they were able to accomplish most of those years.
As fans, I believe sometimes when we look at players, we put on the rose colored glasses, and when we look at the coaches, we put on glasses that have a different shade that’s not as rosey..
Like I said that team has a lot of work to do.
We gotta get this right, and if you look at what’s left out there to select from our best bet is Flores and/or McCarthy.

Yeah we definitely see things differently.

To my eyes the roster has been plenty good enough to win a few playoff games, but Mike would not let it happen.

The playmakers were there for awhile, but put out of position and in archaic and ineffective schemes which ultimately were too high of a hurdle for them to jump when playing good teams. The staff literally got the minimum return possible from the coaches from what I’ve been watching the last several years.

Coaching has been the biggest issue going on a decade now.

I really don't want an older ex-coach either. No Flroes, McCarthy or even McDermott. I don't like Weaver either.... he's been the bridesmaid too often for my liking. He looks like a defensive version of Eric Bieniemy (and he has too much Ravens stink on him).

Let's go with either Shula or Scheelhaase and be done with it. Pick the guy you like best.

How do you know they like Shula and Scheelhaase best?

It's generally presumed Shula is their guy, but how mutual is the feeling?

He'll probably have options too, and will Rooney want to potentially outbid another team or two for him?

Shula not snubbing the Steelers like he has the Browns does not necessarily mean the Steelers are his top choice either.

Perhaps, the Steelers actually do not like the younger coaches all that much, despite their historical preferences. They seemed to go cold on Klay Kubiak pretty quickly.

There might be legit reasons why they're showing interest in veteran coaches like McCarthy and Flores, though Flores at his current age would have been considered a "younger" coach in the league just a decade ago.

Is it possible Scheelhasse is the guy, and they bring McCarthy along as a senior assistant/something to that effect? Seeing as the young man hasn’t been a coordinator, might not be a terrible idea to have someone guiding him along. I could get behind that, so long as McCarthy understands his place. I can’t recollect McCarthy ever being in any sort of power struggle, though, so wouldn’t imagine it being an issue.

Scheelhaase is probably the biggest swing, possibly biggest risk as well. However, if this team was serious about change, this would be the direction they'll go. I think he's probably my top choice as well. I also think I've talked myself completely out of Flores. His offensive hires were dreadful and the idea of winning with defense and safe, turnover free offense is way too fresh in my head.
I've taught you well, young grasshopper...

How he knows, I'm at a loss to say. However, Dulac mentioned in a Q&A that they were really impressed with Scheelhaase's virtual interview. Said he might not be at the to;p yet, but he's definitely not at the bottom ... with folks in the know saying his interview reminded ARll of Tomlin's interview all those years ago.

I'd say Flores is more than a "slightly" better schemer than Tomlin.

His leadership as a HC obviously isn't as proven as Tomlin's over an extended period, but he actually showed a lot more than he's given credit for, given the situation he was in with Stepen Ross in Miami.

Those teams had every reason to go 5-11 each year Flores was there, as that is what those above him wanted, but it didn't happen that way.

Flores would have to have a knack for hiring OCs in order to succeed, as Cowher did.

People criticize Flores OCs in Miami, but Chan Gailey (though older) was a good hire, and it's my understanding that he wanted to bring him back again, but you know......Stephen Ross.
Prior to joining the Dolphins in 2020, Gailey hadn't coached since 2016. I could only imagine the backlash on this board if the Steelers hired a coordinator who was out of football so long. Flores hires were objectively bad and the fact he had 4 coordinators in 3 years is concerning. I also wonder if the lawsuit would keep top coaching candidate from working with him.

McCarthy sat out a year after being fired by Green Bay and again after being fired by Dallas. I get the sense he isn't interested in being a coordinator.

Sometimes being away from what you love you might lower your wants a little to be able to stick around. Not saying that is the case with him but always a possibility with a newly canned coach. Plus you have a possibility that you will do such a great job that they will come calling again for him to take a head coaching opportunity …

That's the game we'll ALL BE tuned in here for...I called Rams to the SB at the beginning of the season, but now I'm going to need that NOT TO HAPPEN...
i looked for it,, didnt find it,,

But i did find this gem.

For DL. Neither of the Michigan guys. I like Harmon if he is there. I also like Darius Alexander from Toledo.

That said, If there is no trade back which i am all for. Im willing to take a WR / S/ CB at #1.

And try to get Darius Alexander in the 2nd or 3rd. Will he last that long? idk.

Im also for taking a Will howard type in the 4th, or 3rd. But no QB in the first this year.
I would take another qb early next year in the search for our franchise QB.

Against OL, QB, AND RB in the first round.

Like you, he's a good dude who likes to push buttons of certain people. I'd love to have a nice bourbon with the two of you someday, and a few others as well. It's weird to have "known" you guys for two decades but never met face to face.
Do you want me to bring Supe, Ark and DBS over??? We'll make you famous...

Art knows what it takes to win in today's NFL. And it starts with hiring a Black head coach. Some on this board are more worried about getting a White guy then they are with winning.
Mark my words, the next time we hoist a Lombardi trophy is when it is being held aloft by the steady Black hands of a great head coach.
I'd really like to see the Steelers hire the first Chinese coach. That would guarantee a Super Bowl win!

I’ve drank with Berm

What a d**k 😉

Regarding Flores, from ESPN:

"In a statement released by the team, O'Connell said: "Brian has a unique ability to connect with players, understand their skill sets, and put them in positions to maximize their impact on the field. The identity of our defense is a reflection of his leadership and preparation. On a personal level, I've really valued the relationship we've built over the last three years, and that shared trust, alignment and high standard will continue to be critical to our success."

Gee, sounds like Flores gets along just fine with the players and management in Minnesota.
