Everything I've seen when I watch him play, and read about him, tells me we are going to love this kid. He is a competitor and a play maker on the ball, which we are desperate for. Brent Grimes is a small guy who picks the ball off and nobody seems too worried there. Cortez Allen is a big guy who gets burnt constantly. I'm happy as hell with this pick and I'm so glad we have addressed both of our major needs already.

I like the pick. He will play the slot WR. That's a bigger need than an outside CB. Cortez has size. Cortez is OK against physical WRs, it's the quick ones that kill the steelers. Golson is the answer for that.
Most importantly, he has ball skills, unlike EVERBOY else on the steeler defense.
This is the steelers drafting a pure coverage player and not a DB who can tackle the catch. I think they will draft another CB later.

My issue with Archer wasn't just his size. He had no position in the NFL and was injury prone. I've seen Golson in person and even though he is short he can carry a little more weight. He's still an inch taller than Archer and can probably add 10 lbs easy. But he also has a real position. He can play CB and has the potential to be a starter. Archer at his very best is a return man with a few plays on offense. He could never be a full time starter.
who knows maybe he will just stick in the slot but improve that area of the D. Which is why I will wait and see. But I feel we can't pigeon hole him on the outside and say ok we are fine. One way or another another body on the outside is needed IMO...............
very well put I somewhat agree but 5'9 is probably stretching it height wise for the kid and sometimes a little over a inch in height in the NFL can make a difference....

a quick cover corner with good ball skills and not afraid to tackle.....

Dante Hall and Jermaine Lewis were also slight bodied shrimps, but were excellent return specialists.
The problem with Archer is that he wasn't slotted into being a pure returner. He never even got the punt returning gig, so he was one of a few kickoff specialists. No way for him to make an impact that way.
I agree that we dropped the ball by using him wrong, but seeing as how we've had very little in the way of big returns for some time, it made sense to draft a specialist with his change of direction skills.
Archer was a coaching mistake, not a bad pick.

I think he'll be a CB in 2015, but wouldn't be surprised if he ends up the free safety down the road.

How many years have we seen the steelers get beat by teams with quick underneath WR? That's why the Pats beat the steelers. Now the steelers have a CB who can play that game.

Archer was a bad pick because he had an injury history, had 6 total PRs in college, and has no position at the NFL level. Hall was a 5th round pick who did KR and PR in college as well as being a RB. He is also an inch taller and almost 20 lbs heavier than Archer. Lewis was also a 5th round pick. But he was also a WR. He set the ACC record for receptions. He was used as a PR, KR, and WR. I don't take any KR specialist in the 3rd round. Especially one that can't play RB or WR at the NFL level and wasn't even used by his college team to return punts. He was a bad pick.

He is a great guy but he's simply too small. he is 5-9 176 hes simply too small... The rules have turned the league into a jumpball league. It is what it is but we simply refuse to get that. The last few years big receivers have shredded us. We then go out and draft thomas at 5-9 and now this guy at 5-9. Let say he starts on opening day which he won't, but say he does, we have 5-10 gay, 5-9 thomas, 5-9 golson. Against New England. Are you Fuking kidding me? Does our front office even watch football? lowest sack total since 1989 when knoll coached and we pass on randy Gregory best pass rusher in the draft. If Gregory was drafted and all you had him do was shadow tight ends, it would be a better pick than this because we play every good tight end in football this year! And I mean all the good ones and it does not take a genius to figure out we are going to have a hard time stopping any of them when they put them out wide...
