Steelers have traded for Jalen Ramsey.

I'll bet some of you were super bummed out on christmas morning.

How is this a bad thing? Help me understand it.
The team traded a clearly declined Fitzpatrick for a fellow superstar player on the downside of his career. Then on top of that, Khan somehow got the Fins to throw in Smith.

When Fitzpatrick was on, it was like glimpses of 43 back there. But, he hasn't been ON in years. . Too many times last year on busted plays you would see 39 trying to catch up to a free runner in the secondary. Whether that is from the scheme or whatever reason that you'd like. Hell maybe, minkah is hiding a bunch of injuries.

Thanks for the memories Minkah, but I am stoked over this trade.

Still processing this trade... My biggest hang-up right now, is the plan at safety. You need someone to take over the FS role, and if you're expecting Thornhill to be that guy, you still need a back up plan because of how much time he has missed.

Miles Killabrew, 32, SS
DeShon Elliott, 28, SS
Sebastian Castro, 24, SS (UDFA rookie)
Juan Thornhill, 29, FS (missed 12 games in two years)

That's a big hole in the roster now. Unless another trade happens, The options for them are limited to Justin Simmons, who is 31, or Julian Blackmon, 26. Sure they upgraded a couple positions, but at what cost, and how much of an upgrade? Worth created a massive hole in the roster? Hopefully they have a plan that shows itself soon...

I guess you were taking a long winter’s nap when he and Cam barked at each other. Also multilpe players called someone out last year on defense for trying to make hero plays. Minkah, no doubt .. Enjoy the remainder of your existence.

Sutton was the weak link there. And as for your made up scenario of Cam and Minkah hating each other...go watch Cam's podcast, he's genuinely upset that Minkah was included in the trade. So try to enjoy your existence, since it's very clear to everyone here that you are one miserable dude...

So, who else wants the 2019 trade for Minkah back? I hated it at the time, even though I liked him as a player, because it reeked of desperation when the season ended with Ben’s injury. 6 years later, nothing to show for it but a few blowout playoff losses as we continue to churn through stopgap QBs.

All they had to do was take their lumps and have a shot at a franchise QB to replace Ben, in a draft that has produced five very good to great QBs.

Oof.
nope. can't do that. the two QBs taken after the pick we traded to Miami for Minkah were Jordan Love and Jalen Hurts. Love was the only one we missed on. We took Chase Claypool instead of Hurts. But, keep in mind, we were still trying to wring Ben out for one more Lombardi at that time. So we'd have passed on Love, too.

Free safety is a low impact position in the austin D and Elliott played FS before... and SS is basically an ILB these days... plus we have a lot of slot CBs to fill the coverage roles...

D isnt like it was 15 years ago... its a lot of transcendent position BS... and again... having a star S in Austin's D is a waste

I hear what you are sayiN, but need a clarification……………………..

When did this become Austin’s defense ???

I had to violently laugh at the “ trying to wring Ben out for one more Lombardi” part of your statement….

It appeared more like they were trying to get him to retire. They failed in their attempt as they provided him with sub-par everything.

If they would have given Ben this kind of fire-power and attention to all phases of this team to that team, I’d be more confident in the distance and possibility of your said comment.

All good / the sky is blue / Kenturkey boy is now a lick-boy..

Thank you. I was hoping to see Elliot and Minkah together for a whole season after the initial marriage of FS and SS...

Now, as you have brilliantly said, there is a gaping hole at FS.

I shouldn't have said gaping now @Lunar will be horny all day...

Ben was part of the reason they couldn't do what they are doing now due the salary cap hit. We can load up more now because we aren't paying a huge QB cap hit.

Before the trade the Steelers had a massive hole at CB3. IMO, that's a more important position than free safety. They just made a huge upgrade at a premium position. Teams can get by without a superstar at FS. They literally just need a player who is where he's supposed to be.

Where was the hole? They signed Slay, Echols in the off season, and were returning Porter, Trice, Bishop, and Pierre. Echols was signed to battle Bishop for that third spot, with Pierre and Trice being the main outside back-ups. It seems like everyone has forgotten about Echols. This move, more than likely pushes Slay to more of a reserve role if anything, or maybe he slides into that FS spot. But I didn't see a glaring hole at CB like I do now with the FS spot.

Not sure about “massive hole” at CB3

Had FA Echols who has looked pretty decent as a Jet and Beanie who is a young guy learning the position both as decent slot options

Have Trice as a boundary corner.

So now instead of 3 younger guys developing we have two plus 30 guys (one very close to the end and the other on the downside already slipping to being average) along with JPJ

If we only we had some coach on the roster with DB expertise that could coach these cheap contract, young guns up…man that would be perfect!!!

Not even worried about the wasted 7th rounder that will be lucky to even sniff PS with the logjam in front of him.

But to add one more huge contract aging guy in the secondary and eliminate a starting S which crushed any depth there was at that position…now that does seem to be a hole. A hole that could easily be filled by a FA signing or a coach on the roster that could coach a young safety like Castro up:.:man that would be perfect…if only we had that coach that specialized in DBs somewhere

Meh…I’m just day dreaming

and now, Darren Waller out of retirement and going to Miami.

They are going on year 4 without Ben and nothing has changed, they got their a55 kicked in the playoffs twice. Sorry, the guy they call Mediocre Mike is what is holding this team back.

One could say there's been a big hole in the secondary for years. I don't know what the exact reason is (could be the system), but it's hard to deny that Minkah's results have not been much above average back there for quite some time now. Very few big plays, confusion in coverage, allowing huge gains on long third downs, etc., etc.

Thornhill is the new starter. Yeah, he's had issues with his calf. Hopefully, he's healed up, and it won't be a problem. If not, I believe the plan will be to move one of the veteran CBs to free safety. Ramsey has said in the past that he is open to playing there at some point in his career.

I'm good with a shakeup in the secondary, because it's been shredded in crucial moments for a long time running. Let's see how it plays out.

I'm shocked people are still questioning Minkah's sudden lack of big plays, it's fairly obvious on the game day broadcast when Minkah isn't even on the screen before the snap most of the time, not going to make a ton plays playing 20 yards downfield in Centerfield.
"The Standard is The Standard" "it's lack of execution"

Mike had Minkah playing skeered. as @Coryea has said.

He'll have Thornhill playing even more skeered now.

same ol same ol with Coach .550

It's not sudden. It been years in the making, under different coordinators. The constant is Tomlin. What I don't quite understand is how confused and vulnerable the secondary always seemed to be in critical situations. Some of that has to fall on Minkah's shoulders.

Whether it was Minkah's fault or otherwise, almost any NFL caliber safety could have done what Minkah did the past two seasons. He was mostly a non-factor.

WE are lucky to have a losing streak in the playoffs after losing a player like Ben. Most wouldn't be in the playoffs to continue a losing streak. To say things haven't changed is quite disingenuous. The team has made massive changes the last two years. we can debate the benefit of those changes, but they are not sitting still.

WR2 and nickel were easily the biggest holes and I think widely talked about. Trice, Bishop, and Pierre aren't going to move the needle and neither was Echols. Slay isn't going into a reserve role and I would be JPJ, Ramsey, and Slay will be on the field together way more often than not.

He was a factor, he didn't get targeted much but he still needed to find ways to produce more than he did. Was it his fault or the scheme? I am not sure. I just know they wanted more game changing plays for what they paid. I will miss him but if Jalen can produce along with Slay and JPJ we might not even notice he is gone when TJ wins DPoY because we can't be nickeled and dimed to death this year in the passing game.
