Woodley done in Oakland

We're still paying him $8 million next year already. He could come back for free and still probably not make the team.

We are not paying him anymore and haven't since the moment we released him.

All we are doing with his post-June 1st dead money hits is allocating the money we DID pay him, while he was on the roster, onto the salary cap books.

We paid Woodley the following CASH/SALARY:

1.685 million
370k
460k
550k
18.1 million
8.9 million
9.0 million

That is total salary payment of $39.065 million over his 7 seasons here (2007-2013).

His SALARY CAP accounting is EXACTLY $39.065 million as well. It has to be. We just deferred the cap allocation in a much different way:

635k
720k
810k
900k
7.7 million
4.94 million
9.19 million
5.59 million
8.58 million

TOTAL = $39.065 million over NINE seasons (2007-2015)

See.......This is where I feel you are 100% full of crap.

There were 20 posts before yours.....of those 20 posts exactly 2 of them said that they would consider bringing him back under a minimum contract.

TWO.

That is 10 %,

90% of the rest of the posts were by posters of "Steeler Nation" who held the same position that you held, but those posters did not have to place themselves on a pedestal and pontificate. Does that altitude give you nose bleeds?

Can you make a point without injecting hyperbole?

Hyperbole will lead to your undoing.

I was referring to the fact that 90% of people here will lean towards an over the hill former Steeler rather than an underachieving current Steeler in general. At least it seems about that to me. I have referred to it in many other threads that I think people would stick James Farrior or Levon Kirkland out there right now and assume they will pick up right where they left off if they were willing to come out of retirement. If you don't think it's 90%, then feel free to disagree but I don't see if as hyperbole. Nostalgia rules with so many Steeler fans.

I just think Steelers fans (like most) prefer what they don't have vs. what they do have. It's the "grass is greener" part of human nature. That's why there's a thread about every washed-up turd who gets cut (whether a former Steeler or not).

Egg-zactly my point.

I'm killing them on SCM's Facebook page right now. Not used to the dry sense of humor we have here apparently.

At minimum salary, there really isn't a logical reason NOT to include him in the 90-man roster heading into camp.

I know people are anti-Woodley. I know people think he's washed up (and he probably is). I know people think he's not a viable starting LOLB (true).

But we bring 12+ linebackers to camp every year. To say Woodley isn't as good as them, when healthy, is a bit of a stretch. He can't stay healthy for 16 games anymore. That's obvious. But as a backup? As a goal-line or run play edge defender, he can't find a role? To fill in as a backup LOLB for one game? He might fit that description. And at 900k or 950k on the money end and 600k on the salary cap end with NO strings attached if he gets hurt during camp, there is no risk.

Again, we're not talking about bringing Woodley into camp to replace anyone. He would not replace any of the top-10 linebackers Tombert thinks are on the roster or building on the roster. He's not going to impact who we draft. He would just be a camp body to see if he can earn, compete and find a role on the defense that Butler might find useful.

well of course, at minimun why not?
what I don't want is to see the team invest cap room on a burned out player

I don't think Woodley can get that from anyone in the league right now....

I thought he'd be asking for at least 3 millions on a one year prove it kind of deal

I think Woodley is finished as an NFL player. The best thing for him would probably be to sign a minimum deal with lots of incentives...maybe that could motivate him to take care of his body. I really have no interest in bringing him back even though I have an autographed #56 in the closet.

Best thing now for Wood would be to go to the WWE. He could balloon his weight to 400 lbs. which shouldn't be a problem for him.

The deal he just had with Oakland was pretty much a 1-year "prove-it" deal and he proved he was pretty much done. I think he's very close to being a minimum salary player now. If he doesn't stay healthy this off-season, he might even just retire.

He played 287 snaps last year and had FIVE tackles total. That's almost impossible to be that un-involved. No sacks.

I just don't know how anyone could look at those 287 snaps on film and think he's anything more than a camp body now.

LW: "eat healthy, train during offseason for just a minimun deal, OR just take care of the 7,5 millions that the Steelers still owe me... let me think, let me think"

we still owe the guy more than 7 minimun NFL salaries, ARRRRGGGHHH

Knows the scheme and at say 2 years 3 mill worth to bring back let witless walk draft a olb in round 2-3 or sign both woodley and sheard this you have enough versatility with 2 guys who can both play olb and de. His contract would have to subject to him if signed that he reports and stays at a certain weight I.e 265, he if back can bull rush any rt in the division. Open to coming back if he is willing to commit to getting and staying in shape.

We aren't paying Woodley any more money. Please read my post above.

no, no, no. I meant that the Steelers still owe him from his previous contract so he might just say "**** it" and retire to a beautiful caribbean island with that money

He was never used right in Oakland. He would look good in black and... purple.

Let him go screw over Baltimore for a year or two.

He has an $8 plus million cap hit this coming season. So, yes, we are still paying for him. I wouldn't want him back either way. But, we are still paying him for this coming season.

As was said before, we are not still paying him. We just have to account for amounts that we paid him back in 2012, 2013 etc.

This is all semantics, but the last check he received from the Steelers was dated right around Dec 31, 2013.

the point is that the guy still should have a lot of money in the bank. Last season for the raiders I think he made 6 millions also.
If his only chance is to get a minimun contract he might as well retire

I kind of agree with the potential to retire.

His body is obviously breaking down. He's made $45 million in a 9-year career. What does playing at $1 million/season prove to anyone? Why put your body through that? If he invested his money correctly and lived within a reasonable budget he should be MAKING $1 million/year in interest income.

so he's broke.
in more ways than one.

Of course it is but is was a dumbass contract. We are still paying for him even though he is not here playing for us. Having $8 million last year and this coming year sure would help a lot. That is one very good free agent we could sign. So, yes, call it semantics but it still is one player we are paying for that is basically sitting on the bench.

No one is disputing the effect of dead money on the salary cap. It was simply a clarification b/c it seemed like some people thought Woodley was actually collecting $8 million from the Steelers this year.

It's not semantics, it's a comprehension issue. He counts against the cap, he is not being paid. There is no basically about it, he is not being paid at all. Unless he signs another contract this season with us.
