Marcus Mariotta

I'd like to see more from Cardale Jones. He has impressive size and speed. I like his upside more than Mariotta, at this point. Especially, if we are talking Ben's replacement. I cringe thinking of the next phase of Steeler football of Life After Ben.

Me too. If Jones can get more comfortable playing in the pocket, he could be a huge get for a franchise

Lol sorry man. Its just that Mariotta really isnt all that good, Oregon has a well-oiled machine in place so a qb doesnt need to have "next level pocket-passer" ability, qb just needs to be able to run fast. he won a Heisman so of course he's gonna have some hype. But you watch, he will get smacked around in the pros, his successes will be short-lived and negligible at best.
 
IMO, the whole mystique between Mariotta and Winston is on the opposite parallel to that with Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning. Not that either of these guys are in the same level of talent as Manning... but the mystique centers on which one is going to suck less.

Ha ha it's funny you say that cause I was kinda comparing him to Jarvis Jones in the fact that he had college success and has to much value for us to pass at the position we will be drafting. I feel the right system this kid will shine but I also feel he has a little Aaron Rodgers feel to him as well. We all can say what we think and half of us will be right and half will be wrong but in the end it is a crap shoot and I believe in BPA. I totally understand where you are coming from but I am a strong believe in BPA and things work out.
 
Draft Mariotta so he can sit on the bench for 5 seasons when we have other pressing needs? Umm.....No.
 
NO QB's from a spread-option system... no, no, no and no... Back in the day, you'd have RB's from Nebraska and Oklahoma tear up the college ranks and then fail miserably in the NFL...that's because they were running into wide-open spaces via the option. The new option QB's are doing the same thing, only they are doing it throwing the ball. The most successful QB's in the NFL are pocket-passers who have the ability to move when they need to do so...

Russell Wilson would be the exception tot he rule, but when drafting, we aren't looking for exceptions.

Mariotta will go the same route that Colin Kaepernick is going. Dude is athletic as hell, but he's limited...and Mariotta doesn't have near the arm that Kap does.

No thanks on JT Barrett, Cardale Jones, anyone from Auburn, Oregon...etc... no thanks.
 
All this back and forth is useless, because there is no need to draft QB. We have Landry f'n Jones for our future leader. We are set! Where's the Tylenol?

The Browns with Teddy B. would definitely be scary.
 
This team has to come up with one over arching strategy. Try to win one more with Ben or cut bait and rebuild for dominance in 5 or 6 years. There can be no in between. There cannot be one wasted high draft pick if they are going to keep Ben. If they could build a respectable defense in the next three years I think they would have a chance.

2 different circumstances...

Brett was 35 at the time Rodgers was drafted.

Rodgers also did not play in a gimmick offense, so his transition went a lot smoother. If I am not mistaken, Mariotta has taken <10 snaps under center in his career. He will basically be starting from 0.

If we are going to get a successor to Ben, I would prefer it be in the similar mold. Winston (not happening) and Cardele Jones come to mind.

I hear what you are saying but this is about not passing up the BPA at # 22. If he is there I would take him bottom line, just my opinion and just what I would do. With Ben having at least 3 years left what a good situation for him to learn under. We are talking about a guy who is ranked in the top 5 in most draft sites, heck at 22 you can't go wrong. Now this is all talk cause he will never make it that long so this is kinda a wasted subject.....but fun to talk about.
 
If he fell maybe we would have the opportunity to trade down and collect more picks (kinda like when the Browns traded up to catch a "falling" Johnny Football or Brady Quinn). But no way in hell would I think about actually drafting MM.
 
Taking him would be a huge mistake for many reasons:

1. He isn't worth the pick regardless of what NFL "experts" think. He's from a gimmick offense and he doesn't have a great arm.

2. He'd sit behind Ben for his entire rookie contract. That means his 2nd contract would be based on potential only.

3. The Steelers already have a HOF QB and a good offense. They don't have a defense and taking a gimmick QB in the first round is worse than taking a gimmick RB in the 3rd round last year. It was a wasted opportunity to get a good defensive player.. or even a good offensive player.

I predict Mariotta will be off the board around the tenth pick or somewhere close, after the Eagles trade up for him. He's Chip Kelly's wet dream.
 
How would Mariotta help the team. Even if he turns out to be andrew luck, what would we do with him? Sit Ben / trade ben (after he gets a nice extension / play 2 QBs? Drafting Mariotta makes 0 sense. We have so many needs otherwise and need to build up the D.
 
A few things about MM, I don't think there is a snowballs chance in hell he last to us. So picking at 22 if he is there I take BPA and god that would be him. Now yeah we have many holes but look at it like this, Ben is hit more then any other QB in the NFL, why not have a back up plan.......kinda like we did with Bell, oh wait yeah that's right that bit us in the ***. What I am saying is Ben is our QB bottom line but what if he gets hurt we are relying on Bruce and Landry......no thank you. MM comes from a passing offense, we are now becoming a passing team more of a dink and dunk style. At 22 I am taking him all day that don't make that the right or wrong pick only time could tell that but I know you take BPA and let the cards read themselves. We are not drafting need we are draft BPA and like I said in a different post if one of the top corners is there then I would not pick MM I would go corner.

You can't compare RBs to QBs. Name one team in the NFL that can win without their #1 QB. Name the best backup QB in the league. The fact is that Ben has played all 16 games in back to back seasons now and with Haley's guidance has learned to get rid of the ball sooner. He isn't taking nearly the hits he use too. RBs are a dime a dozen and if you have a good QB you can win even without a great RB.

Ben is going to play at least 4 more years. MM would be on his 2nd contract before he ever thought of seeing the field. Even then he still doesn't have a strong arm. I know people think dink and dunk but this offense is NOT a dink and dunk offense. Ben averaged 8.1 YPP this past year. That was 3rd in the league behind Romo and Rodgers.
