So lets say the rumors are right and Mariota falls to the bottom of the first round, does anyone think he is worth passing on a CB or LB for... bear in mind the rational for most of the teams passing on him, if they do, is reminiscent of Rodgers back in the day. He would be an insurance policy if Ben did decide to bolt or got hurt, and even if you stuck with Ben over the next few years he would be a good trading piece down the road, when this type of backup behind a franchise QB typically gets a high return based on potential.

Also remember that us passing on a guy like that puts him in the hands of another Playoff team like the Ravens or ugh.... Pats

He wouldn't be the sexy pick among Steeler fans, and he wont contribute right away, but he would be the BPA by a good margin at that pick, and frankly its far easier to find a CB or LB lower in the draft or as a UFA than a stud QB.

Personally I doubt he makes it past the Browns at 12, and almost certainly wont make it out of the 20's, but if he did fall to us, I absolutely take him if I even have a slight inclination that he would develop into a franchise type QB, because you never know when one will be available to you and because they have such a high value if people even think they are going to pan out. Its the one position that is almost impossible to win without a stud at. It may be the only scenario that I want the Steelers taking an offensive guy in the top 3 picks....

I enjoy hypotheticals. It's fun. However, I live closer to Philly, and all I hear everyday on sports radio is how Chip Kelly is devising ways to get Mariotta. No way if he would drop he makes it past Philly.

But, I'm with you. At 22 if there, I'd take him.

I don't think he is anywhere close to the BPA even if he falls. He reminds me of Vick without the powerful arm. Taking him in the 1st round would be a huge mistake IMHO.

There is absolutely no way that guy drops to our pick. No way.

So....would we select him before or after we give Ben his 5 year extension this off season? Even more nonsensical than bringing in Larry Fitzgerald. I have heard some crazy plans before but I've never in my life heard of selecting a 1st Round QB to let him sit for his first 7 years.

the only qb i would take a look in the future is Christian Hackenberg from penn state .

I don't know where I saw or read it, but CLE wants him, which is stupid when they have Johnny Bust. PHI seems like an obvious destination for him if he's not taken earlier, a lot earlier.

I think 90% of the people inside the Cleveland organization are ready to move on from Johnny Football already. Haslam overruled everyone to get "his guy" and I think even HE now knows it was a disastrous decision.

This.

He is a one read, system QB. Any coach that drafts him in the first, that is not named Chip Kelly, may regret their choice.

Well then Cleveland it is.

lol lol.

Well f***** done

Mariotta seems like a good kid, but I am not sold on him being a good quarterback in the NFL. Always skeptical about these system guys translating to the NFL.

I think Marriotta is maxed out. I'm always wary of system QBs. These days it makes evaluating QBs even harder because so many schools use some sort of spread. You're not seeing as many QBs making NFL reads and throws. It's all pre snap reads and most of the time, it's the coach that tells them the pre-snap read so you have QBs putting up huge numbers by making easy throws to wide open WRs.

Mariotta has accuracy issues and that is what would scare me about him.

On the other hand, the new rookie contracts have changed the game. It used to be that if you drafted a QB high, you were tied to that guy for years and if he sucked, it would crush your cap. Drafting a high bust QB would wreck your team for 4 or 5 years.

Now with the lower contracts, it's not as big a deal. If Manziel sucks, it's not going to hurt the Browns in the long run.

In theory I like the idea cuz I'm a PSU fan, but let's be honest. Hack was horrendous this past year

Ben will be 33 this March. This is a good time to begin looking for the guy that will replace him. If a first round franchise potential qb falls to us either in this or the next few drafts making the pick is just a smart move. Just because the guy is taken does not mean he starts in place of Ben. Having the next good qb on the team is huge. As he develops he can become the number two guy until Ben's retirement. Should he become an upgrade as Ben ages, Ben can then become the veteran back up and maybe get an extra couple of seasons to play at least in spot duty in the burgh. If Ben goes as the starter until father time kills his skills then his replacement will be ready and will have some experience. Drafting a guy that you know will sit is the best way to avoid the drought that happened between Bradshaw and Ben.

If this kid falls like some say he is going to from all the things I have read and seen on tv and as someone else posted here Kelly will trade up for him. I have read that the Titian's want Foley and they might work a deal with the Eagles for the #2 pick. If Mariotta for some crazy reason falls to us hell yeah I draft him.

The only trouble is that by the time this theoretical rookie actually gets on the field HE will be 30. Ben is about to get a multi year extension according to all sources.

Thank GOD you dont have a seat in the Steelers' war room

Another 1 trick pony QB IMO. A lot of COLLEGE talent that won't translate to the NFL game. Too much of a project for the NFL.

Marcus Mariotta is going to suck at the next level, I am confident of this.

Same as Jameis Winston. That dude is a quite and will be absolutely ******* horrible at the NFL level. I hope he meets a Ravens, Seahawks, or Detroit style defense on his first game. (I really wish it would have made an impact to have said a Steeler defense, but that would have been a stretch.)
