WTF was/is the point?

Most of Steelernation and the media was too busy putting Kaleb Johnson in the training camp hall of fame to see what was really going down.
Meanwhile
Arthur Smith is trash, DK is an overpriced WR 2, and the Steelers shot themselves in the foot trading Pickens.
Been saying it for months. People didn't believe it.
Wake up people.
Any team serious about winning doesn't trade the best weapon.
Yesterday was what Tomlin's entire career would look like without a HOF QB doing the heavy lifting. Masking his ineptitude.
You're right, we should have kept AB as well.

Pickens was done here. It was not going to work. He is playing well in Dallas, but he keeps doing stupid things. I'm not saying trading for Metcalf was the best thing, either. But we gotta let the Pickens thing go. He was never going to be here this year. It was over. He was a punk here way too much. I'm would have gotten rid of his asss a lot sooner, after he refused to block for Warren. Guy has tons of talent, it's a shame.
The only reason he's behaving is he thought we would never get rid of him so he knows he has to put on a good boy act at his Dallas stop. He will blow a gasket soon.

DK is double covered a lot because the guys behind him aren't a big threat.

Pickens will have boneheaded plays, but the reason for his lack of effort and attitude was lack of production. If they fed him the ball he would've been fine here. No surprise at all he's putting up huge numbers in Dallas' offense.

Back to the original post, I don't think the idea was to air the ball out. I think it was to have a strong ground game with a competent passer so they could finish above .500 and maybe make the playoffs. When they made the move for DK, Ramsey, and Smith, I truly think winning a playoff game became the goal. The problem is the approach hasn't changed and this team looks the same despite different players.
I'm not saying we should be airing the ball out all over the field like 07 Patriots or Greatest Show on turf, but right now I think of the top 10 QB's in terms of yards passing, all but 1 would be in the playoffs if they started right now, it's a passing league, we have a 150 million dollar WR, traded for a pro bowl TE, gave a nice extension to our other TE and we are averaging barely 200 yards per game passing. The reason I brought up Ben and 2021 which seemed to fly over some people's head is they obviously thought Rodgers had more left in the tank than Ben did, just based on what they surrounded each with.

The point is to create a narrative that maybe the team is going to contend. Ive head coached Youth and HS for more 15 years. You know pretty well in practice what you got. They dont give a ****. Tomlin keeps trotting out the same tired bullshit. The offense is still more predicated on not turning the ball over then being explosive. And when they get multiple TO's yeah they can beat some ok teams. If it's someone good, who doesn't turn the ball over......they are hooped. I don't believe he can possibly get another contract. Im hoping they will agree to move on after next season. That's best case scenario.
Yeah...but that's my fault for buying the narrative. And I do every year. "This might work!"

Really, what else do we have, though? If you are always worried how bad it could be...it's kind of a miserable existence as a fan of a team.

I really think Rooney thinks Tomlin is his best chance to win. I don't think it's any deeper than that. How he has come to that conclusion, idk. We were talking about Pickens earlier. While I don't think anyone is gonna get through to him, I thought that was Tomlin's strength. If that isn't happening , to go to the thread title, what is the point?

I look for the positives as well. I buy in every year so I can be disappointed in the end. Groundhog Day is a fixture with this Coach currently. Us fans carry that in the back of our minds, probably until he can prove otherwise.

Losses suck. But hopefully every loss gets them closer to real change

If only they can find a way to lose to the Dolphins they have a real chance to beat last year’s 5 game skid to end the season and just lose out from November on.

5-12 isn’t unattainable

Obviously Tomlin will somehow have a 5 TO game fall in his lap somewhere, beat the Dolphins, and win an inexplicable game somewhere to get to mediocrity and it will show zero changes are necessary

All I really think about is just how many more years will this mediocre mickey mouse bullshit continue.

There's no way on God's green earth this staff ever builds a complete championship level team.

So while I have just a hair of renewed hope every offseason and draft, I quickly realize the coaching didn't change, and that IS the fatal flaw.

It sucks. I'd take anything over being mediocre. Even being awful. That atleast tells you that massive changes are needed.

Being mediocre just gives the possibility that they may be close, but that's a misconception because mediocre is their ceiling. It isn't getting any better.

My kid after many years of listening to my opinion finally figured it out that they are not winning sweet FA till change happens. He thinks Tomlin could be successful elsewhere I said if the condition of his employmemt were hiring competent assistants meaning it was out of his hands and he truly let them coach.......maybe. But that's not happening. The rules and interpretation of the game have changed to the point where his vision of defense cannot beat a quality opponents QB consistently. So he couod get his 8-10 wins elsewhere, but thats the ceiling and no major playoff run is possible.

Collapse? If your intended goal is 9-8, hell, you are right on schedule!
Of the 8 remaining games, only 3 of them are realistically winable.
And two of those are division opponents, AND Mike loves playing to his competition's level.
I just don't see the path to the winning record this year.
If nothing else, hopefully that ends the possibility of beating Landry's record and silences them all.

I buy in at the beginning of the year. This year it's been quite a bit less than usual. I can't get out of my head how bad the defense and OL was at the end of last season. Nothing has changed to make me forget that.

The Steelers are once again an above .500 team playing like a bottom-5 team.

Total offense is ranked 29th just ahead of Tennessee (rookie QB), Cleveland (rookie QB), and Las Vegas. They're just behind New York Jets, Carolina, New Orleans, and Miami. This group includes 6 of the worst 8 teams in the league and has a combined record of 17-49. It by no means is credit to what Tomlin is accomplishing, but rather a systemic issue in the organization for not being able to improve the offense. It also highlights the overall talent on the team overcoming the scheme.

The Steelers go into every year trying to at least the playoffs and likely trying to win a game, especially this year. It is failure after failure and yet we keep running it back.

Good, maybe you and your new buddies can take a reading comprehension class together.
It's common knowledge around here how deep your love affair with Ben Roethlisberger is. YOU bring HIM up whenever you possibly can, whether or not it has ANY bearing on the topic at hand.

And, anyway, I'm just kidding around with you. Don't be an asshoIe about it.

I'm not trying to defend Ben, the point is Tomlin and the organization obviously thought highly of Rodgers to let him hold them hostage in the offseason, then to sign a 150 million dollar WR only to average 30 yards less per game passing than what we did with a horrible Oline, no weapons, and what everyone said was a washed up QB. If the plan is to play it safe and conservative why the hell pay DK and bring in Rodgers for one season?
Rodgers did not hold them hostage all offseason. It was pretty much known he would. sign here. He got a copy of the playbook, was in contact with the steelers multiple times, and was working out with guys before he was official. DK was a good signing the problem is we don't know how to use our players. Last game Rodgers was just historically bad for him. He was physically and mentally off and the playcalling certainly didn't help. We don't give Wilson a legit shot and basically put any one but him in there. The use of the TEs is hit and miss. PF and Washington light it up then instead of building on that we keep going for homerun deep balls the next game. Slants to DK and Washington are tough to defend but we rarely attempt them. I thought we should have kept pickens, but I understand why they moved him. In our offense currently he might have blown up or pouted but we will never know

LMAO, don't get all sensitive now. I brought up Ben to compare what they surrounded Ben with compared to Aaron, just pointing out they must've thought highly of Aaron, and I even said maybe Rodgers is better now than Ben was post elbow.

Still the point remains the same, this offense with superior weapons is passing for 30 ypg less than Matt Canada's offense in a passing league

Yep, the only thing that has saved the offense is 6 turnovers vs NE and 5 vs Indy. Maybe playing the worst defense in the NFL (Cincy) this week will help.

Heh...you can see what's coming. They are so far behind in every game in TOP that they are gonna force the run to try and hold the ball. They almost have to, to give this defense a break. Cincy's defense sucks, and that may be a fine plan. But the Steelers will hold the ball, kick more field goals than score tds, and Cincy will score tds quickly with Chase and Higgens and the rest and it will be as tight as Dick's hatband at the end. Sounds like a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I will probably chase pheasants.
