Here is the thing about this “controversial” pick play.... its at best a gray area in the rules... we know this from one zillion years of west coast offenses using this same loophole over and over (by the way, the west coast offense probably originated in cinci, not sf by the ironic way)
The db has a five yard bump and run zone the wr only has a one yard blocking downfield zone before the pass... the contact is initiated by the db, probably as a bump to disrupt a short pass in an all out blitz... the wr doesn’t have yo yeild a pathway once the db bumps him... its a loophole exploited by screens and over the middle quick slants all the time
