Suppose Bell doesn't report. Would the Steelers really miss him?

It might shock some to learn this but the Steelers were ranked 20th overall in 2017 in terms of total rushing yards.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/rushing

Teams like the Browns and Jets had more rushing yards, and a higher yards per rush.

With our OL, Bell's 4.0 yards per rush is a problem. His yards per catch is rather low as well. His long run of 27 yards would rank 31st or 32nd among stating NFL Running backs.

Yeah, but Coach look at his total yards gained. My retort, give any back 50 more carries or 30 more pass targets, and he'll have similar numbers and shorten his NFL career.

Teams that win super bowls do not allocate 15 million a year into their back field. They have a two back system. Smart teams seldom give a running back a big 2nd deal, unless maybe he hasn't had any knee injuries or off the field suspensions. Of course Bell has had both.

If Bell is out, I think Conner can give us 70% of what Bell did, and Samuels and the other backs will make up the remaining 20%. Maybe combined they aren't quite as good, but it will be close. And a lot cheaper plus they want to be here.

So to Bell, please don't bother reporting, the Steelers will do just fine without you. Why not use the 14.5 million in cap space to extend the other players who want to be here.

should have drafted Eddie Lacy, right?

Fat and cheap vs. MIA and doesn't want to be here?

My question is will the Steelers really miss Bell?

You didn’t answer Supes’ question. You pimped Lacy pretty hard

I'd rather spend the money on players who want to be here. Lacy had a nice start, that was the player I liked coming into the draft. He ate himself out of football shape. Bell priced himself out of the Steelers long term offers.

Now, do you think if Bell doesn't show the Steelers would really miss him?

This is why I wanted us to draft Derrius Guice #1. Funny, he would not be out for the year as he would not have tore up his knee, because his path would have been different

In most instances, you would be wrong, because you only look at last year as if that explains everything.

in 2014-16 Bell was 4.7 ypc or over. Rookie year was 3.5ypc. You keep harping on the 4.0 like that is his entire body of work.

2016 Todd Gurley 3.2 ypc longest run 24
Blount playing for the greatest ever coach 3.9 ypc longest is 44.

Again, answer the question by Supe.

We all know why Lacy’s out of the league. Bell priced himself out, but there is a reason he was priced high in the first place.

You thought Lacy was a better player back. You were wrong. But can’t admit it.

I think he has regressed. The workload has taken its toll. The NFL is a what have you done for me lately type of business.

Last season the quickness was not there last year, was it? What makes you think he'll do better this year, assuming he reports in a similar shape to start the season?

4.0 yards per carry with our OL sucks. Bell's long for the year sucked, and he only had 3 carries over 20 yards, but back in 2014 and 2015, when he was a bit quicker he had 8 carries each year over 20 yards.

At this point it looks like Bell has burned a lot of bridges, especially with the fan base. If this continues he could end up splitting the locker room and killing any chemistry this team may have found. He is not going to get paid 17 million a year from the Steelers. Take the 14 million, win the Super Bowl (hopefully) and go on your merry ******* way. Some idiot owner will pay you next year.

0-16 and 5-11.

stats don't tell the whole story.

How is this stat?

The Steelers are 11-4 without Bell in the lineup over the last three seasons. A 15 game sample.

I think that more than anything shows he's a nice player to have, but far from the most important player on the team.

I'd love to see Bell on either of those teams. He'll average less than 4.0 a carry.

Anybody who doesn't think the Steelers are hurt significantly by Bell not playing needs to be slapped upside the head. Seriously.

you are correct and that's why I am a tad nervous about Conner staying healthy. Whether he can maintain the pounding for several weeks in a row is a mystery. Missing one of the top RBs in the NFL will sting, but hoping for the best out of the guys that are here.

you may be right. No way to know, really. One season doesn't prove much.

I have no logical reason to think otherwise. you seem to think on emotion and how you feel about bell and the need to make it seem like he is not as good as he is. He may not be as good as he thinks he is, but he is significantly better than you try to pretend.

4.0 yards per carry with our OL sucks. Bell's long for the year sucked, and he only had 3 carries over 20 yards, but back in 2014 and 2015, when he was a bit quicker he had 8 carries each year over 20 yards.

4.0 doesn't "suck". On average that puts you at 3rd and 2 every series. It isn't great and, of course you want better. I don't know what you consider "acceptable". Bell showed for 3 straight years he could do better.

Everyone complained constantly about Haley's ****** play calling, even if Ben ended up giving the other team 10-14 points, it was Haley's fault. Would that have affected Bell too, or was he immune to ****** play calling?

The OL started out slow last year too. Did you see where I noted Ben was sacked 6 times in the first 4 weeks? If the OL was allowing that, how much did that kind of play affect Bell's ypc those weeks?

McCoy had 4.0. Fournette had 3.9. Those guys don't suck.

Of course the Steelers will miss Bell, he's a very talented player who can do it all from the running back position. I also don't think they'll implode without him either.

Yeah, I don't think they'll implode and it might galvanize the guys up front blocking for Conner. I know Pouncey's pissed. I mean, I know talent & technique are key, but playing with a little extra fire sure doesn't hurt.

I won't miss him at all. Will the Steelers miss him? We will find out in 4 days.

I have a feeling Conner is going to have a BIG day.
