Would Jimmy Johnson mentor Tomlin? Would Tomlin accept it?

Hell, Shades didn't even want a replay assistant even though he "obviously" sucks at it, for damn sure he doesn't want a mentor.

Add in "bubbles cheek" Danny Smith.. AKA Special Teams Ace. Not even a sniff for replacement at 27th in the league. I tell yaz.............................

Salute the nation

Teams were figuring out how to beat him though, talent or not. Even when they were good and stocked with HOF'ers, Belicheat and Brady would pick them apart with short passes. Give up the underneath and don't allow the big play, fine, Br*dy would underneath you all the way down the field time after time, hell, their punter never got off the bench. Other teams picked up on it and then DLB's zone blitz wasn't as effective any more since its Achilles heel was the short pass. Playing 10 yards off and any decent QB would just throw 7 yard passes all day.

It's hard to count the pats***** because of all the cheating. But even with that DL had some of the greatest defenses in the history of the league. His last year here had a old players and young players. Also how is it better now? In DL's last year.. it was so horrible that the defense gave up 23 PPG... last year they gave up 22.5 PPG. And that's with a defense stacked with 1st and 2nd rounders and Haden.

Who are these coaches? Lebeau was a head coach, and he was much older than Tomlin.

Todd Haley was older than Tomlin too ( Tomlin hired and fired him ) and a former head coach. Haley had some issues with he Steelers

Munch was a former HC and was happy to be a position coach under Tomlin. Ariens went off to become COY, and was a pretty good coach here as well with the QBs and OC.

Yes, I meant to say Tomlin was younger than all those former HCs. You'd think a younger HC would get a lot of boat rocking from all the HC talent under him.

Not a squeak, and that is saying something, being able to keep Todd Haley in check for that long. Dude is a loose cannon, and couldn't last half a season in Cleveland. Got himself and the HC fired midseason due to his buffoonery. That speaks volumes to me.

I think you are conflating the last few years and the years previously. I think if you go back and look at the Championship seasons they had people up at the line many standing with the ability to rush the passer or back off in short coverage. But I think what happened is Captain Tampa Two started to realize he knew nothing about offense and he didn't have much say on defense and the scheme changed. The '09 team had a wicked aggressive defense that came at you from all angles. But that can be done when you have a guy like Polamalu. Now they don't have that now, but they are getting there. If DL is still good I'd turn this defense over to him in a heartbeat over the *** clown and the yes man.

You mean first and second rounders like Artie Burns, Sean Davis, and Bud Dupree?
I didn't mean to imply that the defense is better now. In most respects it's worse since they're apparently drafting Tomlin's kind of players (Ziggy, Uncle Jarvis, Artie, Durpee). Defense was I think 16th overall last year which for the Steelers is unacceptable. Ben and the offense led the league in several categories yet they went 9-6-1 and missed the playoffs because the D and ST's sucked. If the F.O. had any stones they'd tell Tomlin that we're firing all the defensive and ST coaches (except maybe Tom Bradley since he just got here and isn't responsible for this **** show), we're hiring all new ones and you stay with the offense and don't say a ******* word. Oh and by the way, stay home on draft day.

D was what like tenth in yardage given up? They need to get the points given up down and create more turnovers. But I have to mix the good in with the not so good.

Lessee, along with a tie in the first game, the Stillers....

Won two games by 3 points or less.
Won four more games by 7 or less, so six wins total by a TD or less.
Lost three games by 3 points or less.
Lost two more games by 7 points or less, so five losses total by a TD or less.

So basically they were in a lot of close games last season and you can't win a lot of those when you don't put other teams away and your defense and ST's are spotty.

I didn't say they were great but they are high draft picks. Also why fire the defensive staff? Tomlin runs the defense and probably will more so now that Butler is coaching the LBs. Like you said these are Tomlin type players and it's his defense. The best thing to do is get a HC that actually is good at something. Tomlin is hands off the offense. He started tinkering with the defense about 2 years before DL left. Now he's all in. So if it doesn't work now what's the point in him staying?

Defense was 6th overall in yardage and YPG
10th against the pass
6th against the run
16th in PPG

The D was good enough last year, we just turned the ball over and couldn't get TOs on D.

For the most part I agree. But middle of the pack on ppg needs to be cleaned up.

Definitely does. PPG is also a consequence of a negative TO ratio. Give the team extra possessions each game, and you will let up more points at a higher percentage per game.

Here is the thing Cope. Obviously, stats are king in most arguments. A middle pack defense SHOULD have been more than good enough with that offense to get the job done in winning the division. ......But when you watched and looked at it, it wasn't. They couldn't close out games against Cleveland with a 14 point 4th quarter lead. The Chargers, Saints, Raiders and Broncos were all similar. They closed out against the Pats, but I don't really remember a whole lot else. If they could have closed 2 of those, I would say that those stats would have been relevant. Because of that, i have them in the lower third.

Oh, man. Stupid premise.

If Jimmy Johnson coached today, look out. The circus that was the Dallas Cowboys while he was there and after would have seen the light of day. And some of you want to get mad at Tomlin because of Brown and such? Holy ****, I doubt they would have won anything in this era just due to all the off the field stuff. Johnson had no control...but was able to get away with '90s version of just win baby. That would never, ever go today.

I almost wish it could happen though. Just for the entertainment value alone. Johnson would probably be considered, if he was coaching in this era, one of the biggest mistake hires ever. And watching the Cowboys implode never gets old.

We didn't make the playoffs. Steelers were a top 5 offense. I don't see how you can conclude that the D was good enough.

So many couch coaches...how do I get back my time for reading the OP??? Coach, you're at it again. I better see your application when the job opens next time!!!

Tomlin had 3 former head coaches and one that became a head coach on his roster.

He was older than all of them.

Not once was there ever dissension in the coaching ranks.

I think his mentoring has already happened.

Too much common sense and factual data in this post to quote it. Wait...

Don't be dumb. You know that it was a typo - he meant YOUNGER THAN...

How many games did we lose because of Boswell's misses (I know the answer just brining this to light)??? The answer is MORE THAN two (2) games. It takes a team effort to win games - it takes MISTAKES to easily lose games (and it's kinda hard to beat the refs, who are blind to false starts and such)...

Tell Ben to stop throwing INT's...he lead the league at that last year...just sayin'

Yep that and the inability for the D to take the ball away as well.

I think both sides will be working on improvement this offseason.

AB doesn't need to be forced the ball, spread it around Ben, spread it around. Take those dump offs.

And we have upgrade from Sens and Burns, plus second year S's at their position. Watt ready to star.

Should be enough pieces for the team to run, given minimal injuries...............

Boz is the biggest question mark IMO, that they need to solve in training camp.
