Biting criticism from the former Steelers outside linebacker, but Lloyd sees Jones as a talented player. He needs to develop his leadership ability.

Steelers outside linebacker Jarvis Jones is being coached by one of the best players in Steelers history. Coach Joey Porter was brought in with the direction of, among other things, bringing out the most in the team's first round draft pick in 2013.

Porter isn't the only former Steelers great getting after Jones.

Greg Lloyd took to Sirius XM Bleacher Report Radio Monday, speaking with Nicole Zaloumis and Ric Bucher, commenting on Jones's production and stressing his development. It wasn't entirely pleasant.

"From what I've seen of Jarvis Jones, and don't get me wrong, I'm a fan, but from what I've seen him do, I could take a guy from the golf course I play at and have him do the same thing - just run up the field."

Assuming Lloyd doesn't play golf frequently with NFL-caliber outside linebackers, the statement can be taken as a shot at the Steelers' third year player. But Lloyd doesn't see him as a lost cause.

"The guy is talented," Lloyd said. "He has talent. I watched him play at (the University of Georgia), he's a great player, it just has not manifested itself yet. I would like to see him become that guy."

Lloyd, a small-school talent taken in the sixth round, may have used his lack of big school credibility and low-round draft selection (the sixth round in 1987) as his fuel. Jones has neither of those things.

"Most first round players are impact players, I would like to see this guy become an impact player."

Lloyd was the leader of the dominant Steelers' defenses of the 1990s. The game has changed considerably from those days, and while that may not be lost on Lloyd, he won't consider it an excuse either.

"I coached linebackers in Tampa Bay and oh, what a bad experience right there, they're not the same as we are. This young group of guys, they're not the same as we are. I realized then, the player that I was, I'm not that kind of coach because I expect them to (be like I was), practice all-out all the time."

For Jones, Lloyd thinks it's simple.

"What I want to see is Jarvis Jones to become a leader. I want to see him be the guy that says 'hey guys, follow me. I'm gonna show you how to do it. I'm gonna show you how to practice. I'm gonna show you how to prepare, because a lot of this has to do with, not just being a physical specimen and showing up on Sunday, the majority of football is done Wednesday through Friday."

Couldn't agree more. Time for Jarvis to step up and take over games. He's shown no sign of that to this point but one can hope.

I miss Lloyd's fire and determination. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink it. A lot of players today don't have the work ethic past players have. They may have passion, but guys like Lloyd broke the mold.

Yeah, that ain't going to happen. At least this should be his last year under contract. Maybe he'll step it up for half a season like Worilds did.

Jarvis could start by hitting the weights and weighing more than a DB. Oh but wait, then he'd lose his world class speed that has been so effective.

Yawn!!!!!!!!!

He needs to be deadlifting, hang-and-cleaning and squatting all off-season. Lest we start calling him "bean pole"

I'd prefer that we just call him 'Former Steeler Linebacker'....

Greg Lloyd appears to be as adept at scouting LB talent as he is at parenting. There is no 'there' there when it comes to Jarvis Jones.

i was listening to Tunch and Wolf talk about his weight. They said they were in the locker room late in the year when some of the team was weighing in. The strength coach would yell out the weight and then usually tell them they need to lose a few. Jarvis stepped up and the coach didn't say the weight, he just said you better start putting on weight.

Tunch and Wolf then guessed Jarvis weighed about 180. They said he looked like a safety. Jarvis swears that he's better at a light weight because he's faster. Somebody better tell this guy he's not that fast.

The sad thing is that Harrison likely won't be re-signed simply because even at half of what he was, Harrison will put Jarvis to shame.

He's signed through 2016

I'm not saying Jones is a power house, but there is no way he only weighs 180 lbs. Even looking like a safety, 180 lbs at his height he'd look more like McLovin' than a safety.

Maybe he just has skinny legs, you know, for speed, and that fooled Tunch and Wolfe.
I'm 6'1" 185 and if I'm bigger than a Steelers LB then our problems are worse than we thought.

I'm not a Jarvis basher I'm just over him. He ain't getting it for us let's trade him and wish him well.

Yeah, there's no way Jones weighs 180, but I'd be shocked if he weighs much more than 220.

I remember reading the speculation a couple years ago implying that a big reason why he ran so poorly predraft was that he made an effort to pork up for the scales.

Why wasn't the red flags going off for the Steelers before drafting him about his spine/neck issue with USC? Heck, he ended up at Georgia because they wouldn't clear him to play ever if I remember. I know he was productive at UGA but still....

Love his comment...."practice all out, all the time".....This must happen in this day and age when they are so limited during the offseason and even during the regular season in the amount of allowed practice time. The coaches must demand this from the players and as we heard this past season, our coaches certainly are not. You practice the way you play on Sunday.

Me too. He is what he is and I don't think he's going to get better or ever have a season without missing some games due to injury. He is at best adequate on a good day. I don't know that anyone would trade for him but for sure I'd let him walk when his contract is up.

Tombert acted like two giddy school girls when he sucked at his pro-day because now he may fall to them. He'll be 26 this October, has spine issues, slow, not very strong, and isn't very big. Jones played well in college. But he had very good players all around him AND the DC moved him all over the line so he could get free. Now when has to beat a LT one on one he struggles.

Everything you wrote is true, but c'mon he has been playing college and NFL football for quite a few years now without any sign that his "spine issues" are really issues at all.

Look, I'm neither pro nor con Jarvis Jones, but his production is so poor that he's barely worth noting.

He's hardly worth mentioning on the board. If you're reading Jarvis take it for what it's worth. Dude, we barely know who you are. It's a good thing they assign numbers and give out programs. Know what I'm saying?

I have absolutely zero confidence in one Jarvis Jones based on what I've seen to date. He's undersized and doesn't appear to be concerned with bulking up and getting stronger. He's slow and does not have the initial burst needed, and as far as being a leader the only thing this guy leads is the way to the bank every month to cash his over compensated check from the Steelers.

Forget trading him since what would you expect to get in return? No, the Steelers will try and sugar coat this to save face for another season and keep him on the roster and even start him since we are extremely thin at OLB, but as soon as we can acquire any kind of talent there, he's cut.

My question is why? Why did we run to the podium a few years ago to daft this guy. He's already 26 or soon to be with a history of back ailments. Whose brain storm was this one when we really needed to hit a home run with that pick and the Shazier pick as well. I'm still holding out hope for Shazier but have given up on Uncle Jarvis. A wasted pick and making it hurt more a wasted high draft pick.

I'd love to know if this was Tomlin's or Colbert's brainchild or a combination of the two. I kind of think this smells a lot like a lot of Tomlin influence.
