With the 49th overall pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers select WR Chase Claypool

The Steelers need to move this guy around. Line him up at TE maybe. He and Ebron in two TE sets maybe?

Don't see them moving him to TE in any capacity. Steelers already have two TE capable.

Notre Dame had mediocre qb play. Big Ben will throw that ball up 10 feet high. Claypool can go get it...
 
I wanted Dobbins and it really, really sucks the Ratbirds got him. I would have even settled for Akers. But, as far as WR's go, I like the Claypool pick. I have been calling for a big, fast guy that can catch. We absolutely got that and then some in Claypool. Dude is an athletic freak. I can actually see him lose 5 or 10 lbs between his 1st and 2nd years and becoming just a TD machine. Most of our draft picks this year probably won't see much of the field, even Claypool. No OTA's, no mini--camp, no camp and no preeason games is probably the reality. Then again, he is already better than Holton and they put Holton in way too much last year.

We're pretty good at getting good/great wideouts. As long as he can block, play special teams and has good hands.I honestly am still old school and really don't expect a lot from new players until year 2-3. What we already have is a stud safety in round 1 Minkah Fitzpatrick. No development needed.
 
He lasted so long in the draft because he had one big year of production. He had a decent Junior year and a big year last. British Columbia is not a hotbed of football even in Canada. So it takes two years for him to acclimate to a totally different game. So some people were scared off a bit. Those teams didn't have an all pro first rounder. Is there risk. Sure. But if he pans out which I believe there is high probability he will. Look out. Looking at his tape, he is going to have to adjust to two feet in on the boundary. I think on paper the entire receiving unit TE included is the best it's been.
 
Of course I have high hopes for the kid, but using our first pick by taking the 11th WR of the draft in the middle of the 2nd round... I don't know if that's smart. Time will tell.
The problem last year, besides ****** QB play and generally poor blocking, was our WRs couldn't seem to get open. I haven't seen anyone saying this guy is great at getting open or a great route runner. The possibility of him stretching the field and scaring the **** out of defenses is exciting, though. Again, time will tell.
I always assume the Steelers will "reach" on draft day. Looks like 2 out of 2 so far.
 
He may have been the 11th WR of the draft but going into the draft everyone knew this was a very good draft for WR's and there would be many 1st round WR's going in the 2nd round. This is exactly what happened. Other than not taking Dobbins and the Ratbirds getting him, I am very happy with this pick.

Although with that size and speed something doesn't add up, claypool was the 12th WR drafted and wasn't considered a top 10 wr prospect from the rankings I saw on multiple sites.
Did they fall in love with the special teams play and Pass up two RB that would have been a smarter choice?

I didn't hate the pick, I wanted WR, RB, more weapons for Ben

But the guy is not a gamebreaker, more a Devin Funchess type, doesn't get separation but can go up and get the ball.

Will Ben trust him enough to catch those 50/50 balls to throw to him?, that is the question

I read those reports. I also seen film of him separating. So perhaps there is times he does struggle, and perhaps sometimes he doesn't. Once the Steelers fine tune his routes, perhaps any negatives get minimized..
 
Yeah, after watching some tape and sleeping on it overnight, I don't like the Claypool pick.

I just don't like him as a prospect. To me, he doesn't play 4.4 fast. He's a linear player. Not the best route runner. Doesn't sink his hips and rounds off his cuts. I even question his get up and highpoint the ball at times.

He's a tweener. Not sure if we can make him into a TE like Vance McDonald or a good WR like Mike Evans. I agree with some of the comparisons to other "big tweener" WR's that have been drafted in the 2nd-3rd round an not really panned out to much: Funchess, Green-Beckham, Kelvin Benjamin.

Hell, you can look at all the big WR's Brian Kelly uses at Notre Dame and ALL have underperformed: Michael Flyod, Equaneous St. Brown, Miles Boykin last year. Other than Will Fuller (I guess), almost all the WR's coming out of Brian Kelly's offense are not good (as opposed to their TE's which are very good).

I hope I'm wrong, but the more research I do on Claypool, the more I don't like him.
 
This a big dude - his immediate presence may well be felt first in the redzone.
 
We’re we looking at OLB Darrell Taylor at 49? Is that why Seattle moved up to 48??
 
I Think this guy would make a really good maybe even lethal TE. Built more like a TE and with his speed, size and hands could make things interesting in a double TE role. He could still be a threat at WR as well.

I loved how he could make a more physical Lber his *****. If there was a more physical blocking WR in the history of the NFL I can't think of one. Man even had a rule change resulting. That is when you know you are on your game.

I think there had to be some helmet contact with how woozy he was, but he did get a lot of shoulder as well!
