with LeBeau forced out who is the leading candidates for D coordinator ?

Kieth butler will be more of the same

until we know his ideas and philosophy, we have no idea what kind of D he would run. We assume it would be the same, but he's been studying and taking notes for a long time. He could(or could not) be what we need. I'm PRAYING the FO makes the right choice either way.

No way in hell for Haslett. A lousy DC and dont forget the stupid roid comments he made about the 70's Steelers. He would be at the opposite end of the spectrum personality wise from LeBeau. Dick was easily one of the 3 nicest guys i ever met from the Steelers and Haslett, one of the biggest D-bags.
Keith Butler, Mike Nolan, Jim Haslett, Ray Horton and Wade Phillips

If it's more of the same, then why fire LeBeau?

Also, assistant coaches should be a Tomlin hire, not a front office hire.

Well, id think hed want to incorporate some new schemes...hes got a different set of eyes and maybe ideas....but...if he came to the interview suggesting "id change nothing or very little", then that would be his ticket for being passed over because Tomlin isnt lookin for the same

Tomlin: "If we wanted to maintain the standard we would have kept papa LeBeau around. Obviously we want a different charter so that we can ascend to a different level..a higher level, IF YOU WILL."

So, Keith cant say or project hes gonna do what Dick did.......that would kill his chances. If he gets this gig, im sure its because he offered to bring something different....the plus with hiring him is he knows the Steeler way and familiarity..he knows the players and their strong attributes

I'll be shocked if it's not butler but don't be surprised if Tomlin steps in and changes thing more of a 4 man line

Funny thing is that Robinson at the Trib predicted something along those lines back in June.

Also, people forget that Butler was the LB coach in Cleveland from '99 - '02 where they ran a 4-3 defense and that he played 10 years for Seattle as 4-3 LB. So, he's pretty steeped in knowledge of the 4-3 also. So, it might not be a case of "same ol', same ol'".

Are you dumb? The 46 was a defense built to stop the run and was shredded by Marino in '85 and later other decent passing attacks. That defense has no place in the today's NFL, lmao.

I know the 46 is meant to stop the run and no I'm not dumb, but the Rats played a hybrid version of the 46 Defense when Ryan was their DC the same as the Jets have been doing since Rex got there. It focuses on the run and getting pressure on the QB. The 46 defense of today is not like the 46 Defense pioneered by Buddy Ryan. But it is still used today in a base 4-3 Defense and sometimes they bring the 8th man up in the box almost like a 4th LB'er vs the run and that is why you need a safety like a Ronnie Lott who can lay big hits on RB's.

Most teams in today's NFL play some form of the 46 Defense as it is still used and effective in today's NFL despite what you might think.

If Butler goes astray....How 'bout Carnell Lake for DC? With Tomlin having a firm hand in all things defense.

Mitchell came from a 4/3 too.

I think they would have to draft a 4/3 DE/DT though, one who could get to the QB with consistency..

or bring in Suh

Jason Pierre Paul ... He's explosive, fast and young (26). There's an edge rusher for us right there.

yes I was looking at him one day.

I would love that signing............

This:

Keith Butler has turned down multiple opportunities to stay with the Steelers. Have to say that he is the favorite.

Rex Ryan is not a long shot, he is a no shot. Why would he be a DC when he can be a HC or make huge money in TV? Just don't see it.

Not sure of any other names out there.

Butler has turned down other opportunities and the word is that he gets paid a lot more than the average LB coach to stay here. Given how the defense has declined the last two years I wouldn't say he's a lock but I'll be extremely surprised if he doesn't get promoted.

I think it was Del that noted that Butler isn't currently under contract. So, they could decide to just go a completely different way.

Should be? We can debate. Will be? No Fing way. Tomlin does not make those decisions on this team.

I don't think he does. One minute, he was welcoming Arians back at the end of the season and then he is "retiring"? I also doubt that Haley was his choice or so what I've read/heard.

If you don't have a head coach who you can trust to make these decisions, then get a new head coach. If ARII needs to be this hands on, then he needs to back off and let his employees do their jobs.

I will actually become a Cleveland Browns fan if the Rooneys are dumb enough to hire Jim Haslett!

I want somebody from outside the organization. Butler may have waited patiently all these years, but if you're going to ask LeBeau to leave then you have to be ready to go completely in another direction.

Lake would be interesting. How about Rod Woodson? Hasn't he been coaching for a few years now?

In reality they are probably giving DL a day or so to collect his kudos before announcing that Butler has the job.
