William Gay

Seems like its not been that long ago that I remember big play Willie Gay being a weakness in the secondary and getting burnt like toast a couple of times every game. So when did Gay reach the pinnacle of greatness and begin the decent back to officially being "done"? I am sure the Pats will pick him up and Bill will enlighten him in the fine art of jiujitsu holistic defensive game planning.

We shouldn't be in this predicament but due to **** drafting / evaluation here we are keeping what we have.

Exactly. How much is poor coaching and how much is poor drafting is debatable but I think we can all agree it's a bit of both.
We definitely need more speedy and undersized LB's and must never ever ever draft a CB taller than 5'10". That'll fix it.

Gay is done, period.

Gerry Dulac alluded to the Steelers releasing him this offseason. He claimed that the Steelers wouldn't play more man then they did on Sunday (3 man plays) because Gay couldn't do the job.

Here's the link to his full chat.

Gay looked a step slow this year and he was not fast, to begin with. With his size and age, he's best suited as the 4th CB on the field.

Yet he's the lone man who can hold his own in the slot. The Steelers need to find another corner ASAP.

That and the "t*mmy b*y" supplement plan...........

Salute the nation

The current state of the Steelers now

I don't think there is any doubt this team is going to get a secondary player in the first three rounds of this draft. There is too much talent and depth based on my limited film study of the prospects to think otherwise.

If/when that happens, I have to think Gay becomes expendable. We need to get more talented in the group and adding Burns and Davis into the mix helped A LOT. Now you just have to keep upping the ante every year. You can't count much on Golson, but you hope he stays healthy and can play some man-under slot coverage or find some type of zone scheme where he can make plays on the ball. You get another CB with some size/height and length that can start learning how to play on the outside and things should improve.

Secondary play still comes down to scheme and pass rush almost as much as talent. And I think both of those are lacking right now in Pittsburgh.
