Wheaton wasn't a bust. Talent was there. Just couldn't stay healthy.
Holmes was drafted by Cowher.
Point taken on Holmes, though that removes one of the better ones I had credited Tomlin with. That leaves an even less impressive list of Tomlin picks.
IMHO, Wheaton never played enough to really know if the talent was there at the pro level. He definitely made some plays here or there, but I also recall some bad drops, as well as bone headed play at times.
I totally realize, there is very little chance Diggs to Pittsburgh would ever happen... which I kind of acknowledged in my initial post as likely no chance the Vikings would move him. But if there was even a chance, I personally would have loved to see him in black n gold. I think his skill set is very similar to b
ABy's and, similarly to the arguments being made, Ben is partially responsible for Brown's success, which will show now that he's playing with a lesser QB... Diggs has had Keenum and Cousins throwing to him the better part of his young career. If he were to somehow end up in Pittsburgh, I think he could flourish and become a top talent with BB at QB.
And, I for one don't think Colbert/Tomlin are nearly as successful as they've been given credit for, as it pertains to drafting WR....
They've drafted 14 WR in their time together (Dallas Baker '07, Limas Sweed '08, Wallace '09, Sanders/Brown '10, Toney Clemons '12, Wheaton/Justin Brown '13, Dri Archer/Martavis Bryant '14, Coates '15, Demarcus Ayers '16, JuJu '17 and Washington '18). There are far more misses than hits and although JuJu has been tremendous thus far, the real test is still to come, as the de facto #1. Washington still has a lot to prove. Excluding JuJu/Washington, 3 are still technically in the league (Brown, Sanders, Wallace) and none on the Steelers. So, there is no sure thing Colbert/Tomlin are going to draft a better WR than Diggs is or could be if an unlikely trade were to happen.
I get that it's a pipe dream... thought it was an interesting idea to speculate about.
