What to do with Samuels when Connor returns?

coach love him a new thread

courtesy of look at me dot com.

I'm perfectly fine with Conner resting this game, and seeing if Samules can do it again.

I'm also fine with Conner when he's healthy and Samules being on the field at the same time. Remember, Samules can be a Tight End too.

Maybe Randy will have what looks like a 2 back set on one down, then have Samules line up as the 2nd TE on the next forcing the opposing defense to stay sharp and possibly giving us a mis match.

No Coach, he's not a TE. Never was. He was incorrectly listed as a TE in the draft, and that may be why you think that. He never lined up once as an inline TE. He was a slot WR and skatback. All 3 of our TEs are a better TE than Samuels, though I think he may be our 2nd best slot WR and our best receiver out of the backfield.

Samuels last game showed that Conner can easily be replaced.

I don't care about the poison designation. Samuels can play RB, RB, H-Back, Receiving TE, or even slot WR. It's up to the coaches to get him the best matchups, and if sneaking to play a tight end role helps, I say do it. He's too fast for most linebackers to cover.

Washington's one catch shows AB is easily replaceable also

It might be ju-ju he needs to replace on Sunday as he hurt himself.

I agree with all of those positions but TE. He's too small to play inline TE in the NFL, and was too small to play it in college, which is why he always lined up off the tackle, and not beside him.

Samuels can answer questions this Sunday. The Saints rushing defense is excellent.

The Saints currently rank #1 overall vs the run with just 1,107 yards surrendered, and rank #2 overall with 3.7 yards per rush.

This is very impressive. The #1 overall ranking vs. yards surrendered has something to do with their high powered offense limiting the opponents rushing attempts.

When you drill down and see the most yards they surrendered on the ground in a single game was 112 yards ( In their season opener ) it also tells me they must be good at limiting big plays with their rushing defense.

I usually wait for three really good games to see if a rookie or new player has star potential. If Samuels can do well here, ( with Ju-Ju out placing even more pressure on him ), I think we have something special.

It wasn't that long ago the roles could have been reversed as PITTSBURGH had similar defensive ranking number and everyone had to play from behind limiting rushing results. A lot here said it was a paper defense, NOW is a good time to show how the NO defense is "paper" as well. It will be a good test of the rookie but also a test of FINCHTER and his OC perseverance. I think they set the run up with the pass, initially and then eventually control clock. NO's defense can be had by our offense and I'm hoping Randy has that little magic in him to reveal it.

Salute the nation

Hey coach, do you really believe it is all on Samuels or is there merit to be given to the OL and play selection.

I am willing to concede that a good running back stands out for his ability to get yards after contact and an innate ability to make defenders miss. Not all RB's are equal in those skills but the good ones all have a certain amount of that kind of skill set.

I also have to concede that a running back is vastly impacted by the quality of the OL in front of him. It's no surprise to me that we have had a steady flow of productive RB's over the last couple years.

Bell goes down-Williams steps in and now we have a trifecta, Bell out...Conner hurt...Samuels is next. Even Riddley has shown some stuff.

I have heard a quote that reminds me of the status....The standard is the standard....No?

I ain't puttin' nuffin on Samuels...it's all the product of a team effort IMO

Yes, I have been saying Pittsburgh is an easy place for a running back to shine for years for the reasons you stated. The OL and FB are excellent. AB and Ju-Ju, combined with Ben give running backs extra room to run as the safety is typically back to double one of the receivers. If they box the safety, Ben's taking a shot deep.

Is Samuels the next top back for the Steelers? That remains to be seen, as he has to prove he can do it over a string of games. The Saints have a top rushing defense. If he can do it tomorrow, I'll be closer to being sold that he has star potential.

Samuels does many things well. I don't care if his college coaches didn't use him correctly, Terrell Davis wasn't used much in college either. Or to use a Steeler example Willie Parker never had more than 400 yards rushing in his four seasons at North Carolina. Look how they turned out as a pro! I think Randy F is smart enough to use him correctly, and did so in the last game.

On Samuels, he does many things well. To start out with, his physical qualites when combined are rather unique.

He's got the size of a fullback.
He's got the pass-catching skills of a 3rd down back
He's got the speed of a wide receiver. ( Same as Ju-ju's 40 yard time )
He can also be used as a surprise Tight End ( I think )

This means he's scheme versatile as a short-yardage runner, every down between the tackles runner, an outside the tackle type of runner capable of beating an end or linebacker to the sideline, or as a pass catching back. He's not easy to tackle and has very good acceleration to the hole. With DeCastro or Pouncey pulling, or Nix wiping out his man Samuels is tough to defend! As I said before, he's an excellent counter or draw runner, capable of catching a defense that over commits for big yardage, and also capable of getting 5+ yards on a draw in the dime or nickel when the defense is thinking pass on 2nd and long. His slashing ability is good, and his feet are quick. Above all else, Samules is a red zone weapon.

On the mental side, he picks the right hole. He doesn't " dance " or wait too long as Bell sometimes did which means he's less likely to be held to a small gain. He waits just the right amount of time-based on what I have seen and once clear has good speed.

To go a little overboard by comparing him to more established players, he's faster than Bell with more big-play ability and has better ball security than Conner.

pistol and pony backfield have conner on a 1 side and samuals and use dobbs in some of these sets for reed option so you have 3 legit runners that all can hurt you via their speed.

An actual coach would look at this as the offensive line answering questions.

how the **** do you think that bullshit deserves a new Samuels thread?

Move if you must...I see you did. I didn't watch the Houston vs. Army bowl game? How did that work out? Oliver should have played, but I doubt it would have mattered. This opt-out stuff unless a player is recovering from surgery is BS.

We'll see how Samuels does today. If the answer is well, someone well start a new thread on him and it won't be me :)
