Welcome to the Steelers Darnell Washington

it appears the Steelers will have a philosophy on offense.

i can only think Noah's Ark.

Two years ago they draft
Najee - a jump cut, inside zone & hard-nose runner. Explode and then break a tackle between the hashes for an extra 3 yards kinda guy with a real quick first step. Later,
Pat, a real soft handed pass-catching TE who can block in some situations and after
Green, perhaps the best and most mobile outside-zone running center ever. Light in haunches, Green can get to the edge before the back and always hits square to wash a defender out.

This year they draft
Jones - perhaps the best and most mobile outside-zone left tackle in the last decade. Jones struggles mightily with techniques but can absolutely bully defenders with his size. Later on
Washington, a punishing blocker for a TE. Known for his smooth movement in the hips, footwork and technique, Washington also puts surprising power on display; it's impressive for any TE, let alone one that tall. Washington has but sufficient speed while utilizing soft hands as he catches almost every ball.

What play calls are gonna put these guys into a position to succeed?

Yeah, but that tune is changing, I think ... hope. The TD pass to Heyward, the TD pass to Pickens, both strikes by Kenny in the middle of the field.
Those plays were the exception to the rule. There were whole stretches of games where the O would run even a handful of routes in the hashes.

It got so much worse last year than it was the year before.

Btw, I see on Twitter they've already started calling the kid "Mt. Washington"

Could be the steal of the draft, if he's as good a blocker as they say and a passing threat it will keep defenses guessing, Seems like a raw prospect in the pass game with unbelievable physical gifts. After watching some old youtube videos of the kid they were saying he has the Lebron James frame and no college scouts have ever seen a prospect like him. I may be wearing the homer glasses but I'm giddy over this draft.

Washington is such a good run blocker and will free up Freiermuth to be more involved in the passing game. Great value in the third round and for the first time in a long time it appears the Steelers will have a philosophy on offense.
Agreed--

would love to see the power running game and more play action return to the Steelers offense

Steelers trying to catch lightning in a bottle two years in a row with this pick of Washington.
Reminds me so much of the George Pickens selection last year where there were injury concerns as well and caused him to drop to us.

imagine redzone and you go 3 TE with Freiermuth split out wide and your receivers are

Pickens 6'3
Robinson 6'2
Freiermuth 6'5
Washington 6'7
Gentry 6'8
Canaduh couldn't figure out how to use the tall guys we had last year so I have zero confidence he will figure it out this year. He'll put the shortest guys we have on the team when in the redzone. He's a complete moron.

I like when he throws the defender down at the goal line

0:48 start the video

at 1:24 he “ONE” hands a nice grab as well to not break stride.

I think he will be an asset once he gets the NFL.

Salute the nation

I think the sky's the limit with Pickett throwing to him, great athlete who had a solid College career, problem is he was playing with a mediocre QB from what I've heard which kept him from putting up monster stats.

He also wasn't their No. 1 receiving TE. They had a stud at that position otherwise he would have gotten more passes sent his way.

Yeaaaaaaah buddy! Welcome to Pittsburgh, Darnell!

Awwww hell yeah!

Actually Brock Bowers the other TE for Georgia blew it up last year. He will probably go round 1 top 5 in next years draft barring severe injury.

i think this pick is great if Canada uses Washington for what he does best: blocking.

Kid can catch, but when you look at the tape on him you see that he's really not going to burn anybody. His route running and speed are well... adequate. Such soft hands though.

Mystery as to where exactly he fits in this offense unless Canada puts him in at LT to replace Dan Moore.

Analysis when they picked him. Just like I was saying. He didn't get many targets due to the other TE. Muuth will still be our TE1 but with his size and soft hands, you have to target him. The question is, will Canaduh?

Have any of those top-5/10 tight ends lived up to the draft position?

Still would like to see Brock Bowers in the b&g.
That kid is a monster

Mediocre QB? Washington wasn’t nearly as targeted with Bowers and multiple receivers.

As much as I’ve bad mouthed Bennett. The guy tore it up at UGA and delivered two national championships. Far from mediocre

I have to agree if he would have been there in the 7th, I would have wanted the Steelers to take a look. He produced on the biggest stage repetitively.

A lot of the offensive failures from the last years of Ben....to first year of Kenny has been converting first downs and scoring in the red zone. Keeping drives alive. Washington gives them 2 legitimate options on the field to rectify this.

Whether it be for staying back and helping the OLine or catching that 5-15 yard catch. Obviously in the red zone with his height ,soft hands and deceiving speed ......well let’s just say it sure as heck doesn’t hurt. He will also make an excellent decoy. The opposition defense will certainly have to account for him. He will definitely open up things for his teammates.

Another thing to consider is the familiarity of playing with Broderick Jones. Many of the highlight tapes I have seen, the two of them are going out together clearing the way. And dominating. Our running game should improve 10 fold.
And let’s not forget. We got him in the 3rd. It’s a heck of a difference than getting him in the first......where many had him projected.
Time will tell of course.
We HAVE to use the middle of the field, and pass more downfield. We have the players.
The ball is now in the coaches hands.

Having tall receivers won't matter if Canaduh doesn't know how to use them as evidenced by the last 2 years. Canaduh is still the one that will make or break this coming season. There should be no excuses this year that's why I've said his leash should be no more than 6 games. But, we all know he isn't getting fired until maybe after the season.

Kind of what I said the last two lines. 🙂
No excuses.

Name a better prospect in the last 10 years for the outside-zone scheme.
First of all, you didn't use the word "prospect," you said that Kendrick Green IS one of the best outside-zone running centers EVER. Tell me, how can he be one of the best ANYTHING when he wasn't activated for a single game last season?

Secondly, Green wasn't even truly a center prospect to begin with. The guy only started four career games there, three of which were due to an injury from the starting center. The Steelers forced him into a position he hadn't played much and obviously wasn't comfortable with, and he failed miserably.

Thirdly, how about Jason Kelce?
