Uh oh, Mayfield looks like the real deal

I think they only things that can hold Mayfield back are injuries and/or the just being a Brown. That team is cursed and it still remains to be seen if his smallish frame will hold up.

they were cursed because of shotty front office people and coaches making shotty draft picks and moves. I do think they have some people there that have some experience with putting together a winning team. I'd give them 2-3 years and they may actually make the PO. For them, so far so good. Landry is a damn good WR. Him and Mayfield looked like a nice combo. They get more pieces and the tide may turn for The Mistake.

That looked like two bad teams playing each other. Let's see how the season transpires.

Our team couldn't even beat that "bad" team, and that was without their franchise QB in there. And they lead us in the standings. Take a puff of that.

It already has.

Let us play Monday night before we get all panicky. There is a lot of time to right our ship. One win in two years is just that, one win.

The Browns are America's new Cinderella team

Thursday night game was most-watched for NFL Network since 2015

The Thursday night game didn’t look like it was going to be worth watching for the first quarter and a half. But then some kid named Baker Mayfield entered the game, and the Browns-Jets game became must-see TV.

The Browns’ 21-17 victory over the Jets — Cleveland’s first since Christmas Eve 2016 — generated a large number for NFL Network.

It pulled in 8.6 million viewers, NFL Network’s highest-rated and most-watched exclusive Thursday night game since a December 2015 game between Minnesota and Arizona

Let's also not forget NY/NJ is the largest metropolis in the USA, and the Jets had a somewhat "promising start" to the season with a high pick QB, leading to more interest than usual for the Jets.

Add to that, the Browns were featured on "Hard Knocks" and they had the 1st pick over all in the draft. Add to that, everyone loves to see a perennial loser start winning. It's always great for ratings. I was
very interested and entertained by this game, even if the Browns were not in our div. I'd much rather watch this than a Falcons vs. Panthers, a Cardinals vs. Seattle, a Lions vs. Bears, etc. game.

If we had the browns defense to go with our offense we would be 3-0 right now, and I can't believe I just typed that.

I hear exactly what you are saying warriors42 but in the same retrospect I still think we have the horses to compete but need the coaching to step up the coaching.

they now have a taste of victory and it's gooooood. For the diehards, that stuck with that joke of a franchise, good for them. They deserve some relief from the misery they have endured for 18 years.

Actually longer than that. The Stains sucked throughout the 90's and merely picked up where they left off when they returned in 99.

It pains me as much as the next black n gold faithful, but Baker has that “QB Swagger” teams look for. Mood of the entire team, staff, stadium changed when he came in. It IS only one game, but he looked pretty good. I’m curious to see him play a full game start to finish, because he basically played the 2 minute the entire game. And I want to see how he performs once teams have several games of tape on him. All that said, it seems the Clowns have their first real answer since ‘99.

Hold the friggin phone on Mayfield. He played almost two halves against the Jets. Basicly the browns played a clone of themselves. People are calling the browns a contender for the AFC North division title? Really. WTF. 6' tall and a world beater. Get back to me when the browns finish 8-8 maybe. Give me a friggin brake.

Looks like the real deal to me. Everything changed the second he came into the game.

Mayfield looked good for a first game but should have had at least 2 INTs, including one in the endzone that would have taken a FG off the board.

The browns are crazy to not start Mayfield.

The only reasons not to start your rookie 1st round QB are
1. Your OL sucks and he'll get killed.
2. Your weapons suck so he'll have to hold the ball and get killed
3. You have a veteran starter ahead of him and think you are a Super Bowl contender with that vet.

The browns have a good OL, and good enough weapons. Tyrod is taking them nowhere except to maybe 8-7-1 or 9-6-1. Just like Buffalo last year. People bashed the Bills for benching Tyrod to get a look at Nate Peterman, but it was smart.

They knew they were on a dead end road with Tyrod. Yeah, they made the playoffs but were no factor at all. The Browns would be in the same situation if they play Tyrod the rest of the year.

Mayfield has proven already that he is at least competent. May as well let him get the experience this year and hope for the breakout next year, like Wentz had in his second year.

Kind of reminded me of the euphoria Pirates fans experienced a few years back. That ended up being short-lived.

I can' tell you how mayfield will do long term but I can tell you once some tape is put up things can change. Look at BELL, ONCE HE PLAYED and "D's" seen his style, they were starting to catch on as his regularly, thus the low average per carry. Mayfield gave the fans / coaches / organization an opertunity to be excited and they needed that emensly. But to crown him this early in his career......well that is ludicrous .

Great points all. It took an injury for Mayfield to even see the field though so it's still Cleveland and their cesspool of coaches & the lasting stench of losing. Mayfield's talent and will is going to have to make up for a plethora of coaching blunders and it's going to be really interesting to watch he & Haley when he isn't buying into Haley's **** conservative play-calling. I bet it was Haley who argued for Tyrod Taylor and his veteran experience because, well, Haley's a stubborn jackass.

Otherwise, Haley is fine.

I am a University of Texas alum, so I am supposed to absolutely hate Baker. He is from the Austin area and UT did not even recruit him and I had to watch him destroy the Longhorns the last few years.
Really want to hate him nut simply I can not. While he is so cocky, he backed it up in college and I know its just one game but I think he does it in the league as well. Look how fast the ball comes out, its like a bullet. He only runs 4.8, but he he has it and is so elusive when he has to scramble. He understands the RPO as well.. I think he is combo of both Farve and Rodgers and simply this kid is a winner. Maybe the Brownies finally got it right. I fear he is going to be a thorn in our sides for a long long time.

I thought he looked OK, excellent for a rookie. He made 2-3 excellent throws and took the predictable underneath stuff and hit the slants that Haley likes. His WRs also dropped 3 balls that were catchable, with one pathetic drop that my 50 year old *** could have made. On the other side, Jets dropped two sure INTs that would have changed the game, with the major one in the endzone. Also, not sure why, but they were letting a **** ton of holding go on the Browns. I know they have a good OL but just go back and look at all the grabbing - it was bad. The Jets inexplicably kept dropping into zone even when they were getting shredded underneath - I thought only we did that......

Overall, I thought he did well but made a bunch of risky throws or threw late outs that will get picked against a better team. If they stick with their analytics based approach and don't abandon it when there are rough patches they are probably going to be the top of the division in a couple of years. Since I hate them, I hope they don't do that.

Well Hue Jackson has a win this season. Tomlin does not.
