UCONN Cancels Football

Without their money maker, Men's football, I'll bet several other sports gets cancelled as well. Trickle down affect

UConn was in a unique circumstance playing as an independent in football this fall.

fair point with all the Big Conferences limiting to conf games only.

@DIC - you betcha. If Football goes then all other sports have no funding.

That includes UCONN Womens basket ball as well. As big as some think women's basket ball is it makes nowhere near what the football team brings in, I'd almost bet it isn't self supporting.

EDIT: I'm not saying they cancel women's basketball but just mentioning how BIG football is.

Colleges have more liability with their students than professional teams do with their employees in my opinion.

According to this from the Sports Business Journal (2018), UConn women's basketball had over $9 million in revenue, only behind Stanford (over $21 million).

I would think that would be self supporting then but you never know pending on salaries / facility / insurance/ scholarships / etc. I'd be curious to see their budget report. I'd also venture to say after the top 3-5 women's team revenue that it plummets very fast. 1st place revenue $21 mil drops to $9 mil at second place.......................................

in general, all college sports lose money except football and men's basketball, and men's basketball is a loser for many schools. Some schools even lose money on football. It's expensive but it's also the best advertisement a school has and one of the best ways to get alumni donations.

With all the major conferences going to with conference only play and Uconn being independent, they likely would have had to cobble together a schedule against a bunch of small schools that made it not worth the effort. I would bet that their players will be allowed immediate transfers.

I have never doubted that schools would be the first to start canceling. fingers crossed, but I fear this will eventually hit most schools and eventually the NFL.

Don’t worry.

Facts are facts. Just so you’re aware, 10 years ago my job was 100% Economic Research & Projects during the “Great Recession”

Simple Cost/Benefit Analysis: if I were UCONN, I’m betting it’s not worth the expense.

Big Universities like Florida Gators—they won’t suspend jack ****. The pure financials of their last National Championship — the University lost $ (per the game overhead).

The NFL—chances of it shutting down are close to zero.

1. I can research enough to do the numbers without the seeing the real #s and get close to the mark of cost/benefit. The NFL Owners, who act as partners (not like MLB; who operate as separate entities), they’ll play.

2. Players can sit out. Bye [emoji112]. There’s gonna be someone else taking your place damn quick

3. COVID is now nothing but the Dems strategy to beat Trump. They’ll destroy the economy to do it, but be aware that the leagues biggest stars never speak out against Trump (cough LeBron cough) — and the data shows it’s peaked. Not over, but definitely trending down. Could break COVID data down more, but I’d bet on fans in stands by November.

Professional organizations are in business to make money, sometimes at short term losses to get long term gains.

um - just so you know, I have 30+ years in big business - most of it dealing with global contracts. I am fully aware that money is the root of all things. I am fully aware of the economic principals in play. So, you know, I don't need a lecture nor your credentials to have a conversation. If they get through the season without having to cancel a game or playoff teams getting wiped out in an *** kicking due to roster depletion, I will be shocked.

As to your third point..how about you leave the political discourse on the Politics page. I don't participate there for a reason...no desire to see the rhetoric from either side.

Just heard rumblings that the Big Ten is about to cancel the season. Heard the other conferences will follow suit.

Yep, i heard that too. I also heard that Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan could join up with teams from the Big 12 and SEC to play some sort of season.

I bet the bottom feeder teams did the math and found out they make more money not playing any sports at all. TV money may be guaranteed so they will just pocket the cash

The MAC shut down.
Heard on radio this morning that B10 had a big meeting of the big wigs, but no announcements as of that radio broadcast...about 1pm Eastern.
Radio made a veyr good point about who is going to pay for all those tests. 2 a week per player and coaches and other support staff. That could add up if the cost of tests are as high as I have heard (though I have no idea what on test costs).

Stanford canceled a bunch of other sports. going to be al ong ride.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">DP was told an hour ago that the Big 10 and Pac 12 will cancel their football seasons tomorrow... The ACC and the Big 12 are on the fence.. And the SEC is trying to get teams to join them for a season. <br><br>Watch live: <a href="https://t.co/sMaeXQkLfl">https://t.co/sMaeXQkLfl</a> <a href="https://t.co/oSUNGMTEqw">pic.twitter.com/oSUNGMTEqw</a></p>— Dan Patrick Show (@dpshow) <a href="https://twitter.com/dpshow/status/1292810469779136512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 10, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Also from Dan Patrick, Iowa and Nebraska were the only two Big 10 teams pushing to play.

Just so you know; who in the blue hell are you?

About thinking you’re “so special” that I “lectured you” know this: take all of the “I” am, have, know references .... just look in mirror and say “I don’t care who you are”
