Tomlin to start Blake over Boykin against Ravens

My point is, barring injury, he shouldn't be rotated in at all. He's a glaring liability when on the field, and it's been that way for at least 6 weeks. We did an awesome job coming back and dominating in the second half. We can't count on that to happen again, and for all intents and purposes, our playoff run starts now. I don't want to be not have the Steelers in the playoffs because the coaches want to keep rotating in a guy who is hurting the team. None of the linebackers (or anybody else for that matter) is failing even close to the level of Blake.

I don't give a flying **** about Blake's confidence or mental status. Sit the guy until he proves on ST that he can tackle, then we will see if he an cover

Just not clear on the reasoning behind this.

There has to be something logical going on behind the scenes.

Nope. Irrational ego protection is not logical, but it very, very real in the world - in all phases of life: business, social, family and, yes, pro sports. By benching Blake, Tomlin feels that it would be admitting a mistake in not playing Boink to begin with, and he would rather protect his own ego than all else.

Why do you think it's ego for not benching Blake when he won't play Sharmarko and he(Colbert) traded up for him. You would think he would be hell bent on playing Thomas If his ego was so out of control.

Let's take a step back...

Last week, there was a "report" that Buddy would "START" over Moats. That did not happen. Guess what - the LB's still did their jobs and we eventually won the game. This week, Blake has been "reported" as the "starter"---SO FRICKEN WHAT?!?!? He'll be rotated in and out just like last week and, "Bob's your uncle" - we'll win again, God-willing...

The knickers on some of you are just SOOOOO DARN TIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when it comes to Blake it is a wonder my knickers doesn't cut off my dick circulation and thud... fall off.

With how bad he has played I simply do not get the devotion to him.

What they should be doing is force feeding the other three corners to get a little more "comfy" playing together before the playoffs.

Mannnnnnnnnnnn, not only can Blake not cover, dude can't tackle either. Bummer

Relax people. Tomlin said he wouldn't be changing the CB rotation.

Over the last 3 games Boykin has seen more snaps than Blake. Blake might start the game but he won't be on the field as much as Boykin.

I know one thing for sure -- I'll be living in my fears whenever Blake is on the field.

Just saw this at the Washington Post...

"but he’s (Blake) still one of the biggest liabilities in the league. The fourth-year player has already ceded 998 yards in coverage this season, the ninth-highest total in the past nine seasons."

But hey, he's Tomlin's guy, so let's watch him get beat repeatedly for a quarter or two before Boykin gets in the game....

Nice article there, but "defense wins championships" isn't idiom; it's an adage.

Ninth-highest total in nine years...with two games to go. Yikes.

Trap game.

Isn't Boykin Tomlin's guy also?

blake has a pick6 this year!

Blind Squirrel... nut.....

The team has to like Blake because he is a bigtime hitter.... but he sucks at tackling and he isn't coordinated in coverage. He will try to jump routes, so he will have some playsbut wrong formations too often happen when he is on the field and at least aren't as noticeable when he is not... and his apparent guy is getting targeted too much for it to be a coincidence. Honestly, he doesn't have the size, but he fits safety more than CB, but this team does like zone, and in zone having safety like skills is ok....

I just really really disagree with Allen and Blake as starters especially at the same time...

#1 Boykin can start on offense and defense on every snap for the rest of the year, relax he only cost us a 5th rounder.

#2 Lake has to be a factor here. It's his job to get the secondary ready. He played both S and CB in his career, so why is he failing so poorly at getting his players ready?

#3 Moving forward I'm pissed that we would ever put Blake on the field, the kid is injured and plays on rollerskates when it comes to double moves. Thomas also showed that he can plant him on a short route. The only positive is I want to see Blake take no more than 25% of the snaps this week, reducing his role, until it becomes 0% after the Cleveland game. Not only is he a liability, but through self scouting, he's the guy you want to target each time he is on the field. The league knows it, it's not a secret, and he's been exposed now for 6 straight weeks.

#4 Allen needs to have his snap count reduced. Golden has earned the right to be on the field more. I like him in big nickel formations, but I'd also like to see Golden in the base set and nickel replacing Allen, more often.

More Tomlin arrogance, even Jimmy Clausen will light up the POS Blake.

You're blushing.....

I gotta think it's an ego thing with Tomlin and/or Butler to keep playing Blake. They don't want to admit they were wrong. I don't think any sane person is going to blame them for starting Blake to begin with, but he's proven, quite a while ago, to be a glaring liability. Admit he's not the answer and move on, no harm, no foul. They did it with Scobee, Archer, and Jacoby Jones, why not with Blake?

My thoughts......the NFL has proven more than one coach wrong and more than one player has turned out to be not what coaches thought when they drafted them / acquired them. It's not as though Tomlin would be the first ever to have a hiccup or two in his career.......but the Shamrko Thomas thing has merit....he's a Tomlinista too so wtf? I'm confused.

Been paying more attention to Blake and he has the worst hips ever for a cb.....he flips wide open on the first move every time. And he's not likely to have many more pick 6's with that club for a hand. Boykin damn near had one Sunday when he read that screen.......play Boykin! Like you said it's a 5th pick at worst. Tomlin has to admit he was either wrong on Blake or wrong on Boykin, so again, I'm confused.

Here's some neat stats with the CB formations done over at Steeler Depot:

Cockrell and gay should be the starters and boykin in the slot and blake as the 4th cb, i really hope come july we go cb in rnd 1 or 2 and our cb rotation is gay/cortez cockrell golsen grant
if they want to keep blake move him to s, he is just way to short to line up vs guys like aj watkins and todays 6"2 plus wr's.

I know everyone wants to hear Tomlin say Boykin is going to be starting/playing over Blake.. he's never going to say that.
But you watch and see who gets more snaps, my guess is Boykin does and that's all I care about.
That being said.. if Boykin hardly sees the field then I'll be questioning what the heck Tomlin is thinking but judging from the past 2 games, I say he sticks with Boykin the majority of snaps.

Jarvis is the named starter yet plays less snaps than Harrison in most games. What's the difference? Boykin has been getting more snaps than Blake over the last three games as long as that doesn't change I don't care if Tomlin names Blake team captain.

So, the Steelers' defense averages nearly three and a half less yards per pass with Gay/Cockrell/Boykin than it does with with Gay/Blake/Cockrell.

Tomlin is playing Blake this week why, exactly?
