Was the stat original quoted as only away games?
Yes, it was. T-mans original post stated away games.
Doesn't much matter to me. We all know this is a 'beyond coaching' issue. IMO, it is a culture issue. MT gets his guys to SAY the right things very well for a coach. Saying the right things doesn't add up to DOING the right things. MT might be the best HC in the league when it comes to saying the right things. Unfortunately, we are not dealing with professionals in most cases but athletes who get paid. They get paid to DO the right things to make themselves successful. They do not get graded on saying the right things.
We have some players who are naturally motivated to study, work hard, stay in shape, get in shape, watch film of their opponents to exploit weaknesses, take the game in front of them seriously, etc.
Then we have guys who come to work and punch the clock. Out of shape, underprepared, ready to plan their next celebration for doing what they are already PAID to do. We used to have outspoken leaders who would keep everyone in line. Seems like now we have TALKERS. The real leaders who do the stuff to give themselves an advantage are more soft-spoken.
We used to be 'smash-mouth', "I'm gonna run your *** over and there is nothing you're gonna be able to do to stop me"..."and then, I'm gonna do it again" kind of mentality. We had players who played hard every down. Now, we have a finesse team. It's hard to be consistent as a finesse team unless everyone does his job on every down. From 'selling' a route to 'selling' a return before changing direction to picking up a blitz to finishing a block. On defense, from concentrating on assignments, filling YOUR lane to wrapping up a tackle. On the line it takes beating your man or at least NOT allowing him to get free to block his assignment. On STs, if you know you have issues with setting a snap for a kick...practice it over and over until you don't.
As fans, we SEE what the reasons are that we under-perform in games. We don't need an EXPLANATION for it. We need to hear what your going to do to make sure it doesn't happen again.
A dose of humility can be a great motivator...for those who have pride and already take their job seriously enough to put the work in to get better.
Bryant wasn't on the field sooner because he runs lazy routes sometimes. How do you keep him from doing it again. I would point it out on tape in FRONT of the WHOLE team. Make your players accountable. A punter who cannot field a snap to hold for a kick...same thing. Then say, "get to work fixing this problem or someone else will".
As far as "playing down" to our competition, no cliched speeches are going to do the job. They know why they lost too. The question is, what are you going to do about it?
There is an article about our change in conditioning coaches, from Chet Fuhrman to Garrett Giemont. While the team suffers a 'normal range' of injuries w Giemont, they suffered less than average with Fuhrman. We didn't seem to have a bunch of under-conditioned sluggos on our OL or DL. Casey might have been overweight BUT he was strong as an ox because he continued to condition his fatness.
Foster, Pouncey, Gilbert, Beachum and even DeCastro are all under-conditioned athletes. All of them could stand to get stronger and lighter (not in weight but in build).
Cam Thomas is an embarrassment. We have a 260#, 36yr old LB who can squat and bench more than this cream-puff. Getting off blocks seems to be an issue? Have them walk around w squeeze balls all week to develop hand strength so they can squeeze and twist wrists and hands of the offensive players. Thats old-school ****. We don't have to abandon finesse BUT we cannot rely on it entirely.
Every week is the SB fellas. The high-effort guys will get the hats, period. If the HC needs to motivate you, you are in the wrong business BUT YOU WILL be held accountable. That's the kinda **** I want to hear.
