TJ Watt

Watt looked like an all pro.

T.J. Watt feeling 'way more comfortable' at left OLB

It's safe to say that the Steelers' decision to move T.J. Watt from right to left outside linebacker was the right call. On Sunday, Watt, who finished third on the Steelers with 7.0 sacks as a rookie last season, recorded 4.0 sacks during Sunday's game against the Browns. According to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic, only five Steelers in franchise history had ever recorded four sacks in a game since individual sacks became a league statistic in 1982. Making Sunday's performance even more impressive was the fact that Watt didn't play during the preseason and was hampered throughout training camp with a hamstring injury.

“I always feel like myself -- once I get on the field and I’m healthy, I always feel like myself," Watt told reporters after Sunday's game. "Like I said, the left side is where I feel way more comfortable, and I think that showed today. We just gotta get into the film room and improve for this upcoming week and forget about this game."

Unfortunately for Watt, Browns' pass rusher Myles Garrett, a fellow 2017 first round pick, also had a monster performance on Sunday. Garrett, who also recorded 7.0 sacks as a rookie, recorded two sacks and two forced fumbles that set up both of Cleveland's fourth quarter touchdowns. The scores helped the Browns overcome a 21-7 fourth quarter deficit to nearly defeat the Steelers for the first time since 2014.

“It was a thriller," Garrett said of Sunday's game. "It was fun. The whole game going back and forth, I know they had the momentum going into basically the second half and much of the third quarter. We fought back and tied it up. That is just a credit to the perseverance and the toughness on this team to not give up.”

Garrett thought he and his teammates were about to celebrate a victory before Watt blocked Cleveland's game-winning field goal attempt with just seconds remaining in overtime.

“I was for sure [Browns' kicker Zane Gonzalez] was going to make it so I was excited," Garrett said. "Then you see a block, and you are kind of like ‘Well, you know we got them again,’ so have to beat them next time.”

Despite both mens' efforts, neither team was able to come up with a victory, as both Pittsburgh and Cleveland find themselves looking up at Baltimore and Cincinnati in the AFC North standings after the NFL's opening weekend. While Sunday's tie is surely leaving a bad taste in their mouths, Watt likes a lot of what he saw from Pittsburgh's defense on Sunday and where he thinks the unit is heading moving forward.

"I think we’re gelling really well as a defense and that just shows all the hard work that we’ve been putting in to this point," he said. "We just have to keep working and keep getting better as a defense."

I only listened to the game on radio but i was sitting there thinking this guy is our new polamalu. Solid is the understatement of the day.

Watt was shining in his new position on the left side of the D, he was a playmaker!

Bud was a waste there against the weaker RT's

Bud did have a good game, for him. Still went running himself out of position on run plays by gunning wide up field every time, lost contain on a big run.

maybe he's afraid of contact?

Not to lessen the performance as I loved it.

But the Clowns O-line was suspect and Watt last year started off strong against Cleveland and was hot and cold after that.

My point is I would like to see more consistency this year.

And I feel that we will see just that.

Pulling for ya TJ make us great again !

Now I'm starting to think the move wasn't to help Dupree, but to get Watt on his good side. It ******* worked, but don't worry, it's a coaching move that Butler and Tomlin will never get credit for around here...

Does Durpee's LB coach even see the fly-by's and if so why not coach him better?? Is Durpee uncoachable or is the LB coach not very good???

WATT had an amazing game and if the LB coach is as bad as Durpee shows then how GREAT Watt must be to overcome the coaching.......... or visa versa of Durpee is that uncoachable???

Which coach was it that came up with the idea? Butler, Tomlin, or Peezy?

Good job for which ever one it was.

Can't be PEEZy because I want him replaced, can't be Tomlin because he's a bad coach with deer in the headlight eyes, and can't be Butler as he has been promoted from within and we need outside organization help.....................NEXT question.!!!

Harrison had his share of fly-byes. Dupree also tipped a key third down pass and his LT had a lot of procedure penalties.
Not sure his movement was responsible for any of the penalties but it usually plays a role. The defense as a whole had
a pretty good game. When the offense has 6 turnovers the defense ends up on the field more than a usual game.

Porter purportedly recommended it after the first OTAs. Seems like Bud is getting the raw deal here. He had a pretty solid game if you look at his numbers. TJ’s numbers deflates his obviously. Yeah that gift Tyron spun out of was head shaking, but it happens to all the players at some point.

One writer said a great analogy with Bud. He was always going to be a Robin and not Batman. We have Batman with Watt. Bud can be Robin. Just like Haggans was with Porter.

Good anology Ike and Bud being robin is A-ok. He did have a decent game but as you said, Watt's game overshadows Dupree's.

Personally, I like having 2 Batmen on DL!

I'm actually really impressed with Durpree, he made more plays in that first game than he did for half of the season. He's really fast and runs himself out of plays, but with proper coaching and dicipline, He could have had 4 sacks also.

Coulda shoulda woulda

Playing against an undrafted rookie LT I would expect any decent 4 year OLB to abuse him.

Watt had 7 sacks as a rookie and only rushed the QB on 25% of passing plays. If we can get one of our safeties to take over alot of his coverage responsibilities and just let him go after the QB, could be a great season for him. He lined up at ILB on a few passing downs too

What's up Pop?

I think 10 pressures is abuse of an UDFA rookie. He can build on this , and will have double digit sacks, if he's healthy and learns from his mistakes from game 1.

4years of running past the QB, how much more time does he need to get it?

Echo...Echo... ;)

I think you're confusing him with Jarvis. That was JJ's only pass rush move. Bud at least has speed, size, and athleticism, as well as better hands and a few different pass rush moves. Plus he had 10 pressures, and if he rushed appropriately, could have had 4 sacks as well. I'm at least seeing something to get excited about, instead of watching the definition of insanity.

And for those who don't know the definition of insanity is watching something over and over again expecting it to change.

But there was chance. Watt and Dupree switched sides :) Dupree looks better.
