That's a good point. There are far more college teams running 3-4 and even the teams that use 4-3 have far more 3-4 OLB types than in years past.

They used to be called "tweeners" They were between DE and LB in size. Back when Cowher was drafting, most DEs in college were in the 270 range. That was the norm. The tweeners were guys in the 250 range that were viewed as too small for the NFL.

Now you see the tweeners are more of the standard in college. The line between 4-3 and 3-4 is blurred. Most teams run a hybrid of both.

As for Wide receivers. When 300 teams are running the spread, you're going to produce good receivers for a 32 team league. I doubt 40 teams run a 3-4 in college.

Apparently Tomlin doesn't agree with the position taken in the paper that shall remain nameless as he stated that there are less "projections" or "conversions" needed at OLB recently due to the high number of kids coming out who played the position in college. After reading the comments attributed to Colbert about how deep the class was in the OLB position I'm a bit concerned. From looking at the nice talent evaluations posted on here there might be lots of players but few really good ones and I suspect that is true every year. I hope these idiots don't take another weak and slow outside backer.

I would start with the 2007 draft when Brady Quinn was falling and the Browns gave the farm to Dallas. They never contacted the Steelers and the Bungles because they didn't think that a team within the division would trade with them for a franchise QB.

It is not a question of due diligence. In my mind it has always been a question of best practices while on the clock.

Commonsense dictates to me that their is value in a ticking clock and the league is replete with examples GM's who make bad decisions during the draft.

Why not wait and just see what happens before turning in the card with time to spare?

Exactly. They need to be drafted higher. But the problem with the Steelers is they have changed the type of players they are looking for. They are not trying to find Joey Porter types. They are looking for smaller, faster players. So they aren't competing for typical 3-4 OLBs like they did a few years ago. They had Jones ranked as one of their top 6 players. So who exactly is stealing all these great 3-4 LBs that the Steelers want? Who did the Steelers want that they couldn't draft at OLB?
