Merkel now backs tariff reduction on US vehicle exports

Much to the shock of liberals, being tough on trade works better for American exports than being nice and hoping other nations will be “fair” to us in return.

When President Trump threatened to slap heavy tariffs on European auto exports to the US unless they brought their tariffs down to equal our tariffs on them, he was lectured that this was “no way to treat our allies,” and other such piffle. The four-to-one difference in tariffs on our exports to the EC over their exports to us was an ongoing outrage that didn’t bother people who buy BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes products, and who would never consider a Cadillac.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday she would back lowering European Union tariffs on U.S. car imports, responding to an offer from Washington to abandon threatened levies on European cars in return for concessions.However, she added EU tariff negotiations required a "common European position and we are still working on it."

I’ll bet they are working on it. Germany accounts for at least half of Europe’s auto exports to the US.

Iranian ships harassed U.S. vessels dozens of times during the last years of the Obama administration. That has largely stopped under Trump.

A study of U.S. Navy statistics tells a story of two presidential administrations, at least in terms of Iranian provocations of the U.S. military.

The study revealed that after dozens of instances of Iranian harassment of the U.S. Navy in the last years of the Obama administration, incidents of provocation have dropped in the first two years of the Trump presidency.

In 2015, the year that President Obama enacted the Iran nuclear deal, Iranian vessels harassed American ships 22 times. That aggression escalated in 2016, Obama’s last year, with 36 instances of provocation.

Included in those 2016 numbers was the abduction of American sailors, which the Iranians filmed and broadcast to the world.

However, the numbers have dropped precipitously in the years since President Trump took office. Trump has frequently deployed tough-on-Iran rhetoric.

Iranian vessels pestered American naval ships only 14 times in 2017, Trump’s first year, and that number has fallen to an incredible zero occurrences of Iranian aggression so far in 2018.

Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal in May of this year.

The organizers behind the blimp depicting President Trump as a baby that will fly over London next week during Trump’s trip to the United Kingdom announced that they will now take the blimp on a world tour.

The organizers wrote on a crowdfunding site for the 20-foot-tall balloon that “people have have been SO generous and supportive that we now have WAY more money than we can sensibly spend just on Trump's UK visit in July!”

“So - Trump Baby is going on World Tour!” the organizers wrote. “All the details are still TBC but once little Donald has been run out of Britain in July, we will start to put together an itinerary - so if your community is unlucky enough to be expecting a visit from the orange sex pest, please get in touch after the 14th.”

More than £25,400, or about $33,750 had been raised for the blimp as of Saturday evening.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Thursday approved the request to fly the balloon over the city during Trump’s trip to the country.

"The Mayor supports the right to peaceful protest and understands that this can take many different forms," Khan’s office said in a statement.

Leo Murray, who is organizing the protest, told NBC News last month that Trump “has a tremendously fragile ego so ridicule is an effective form of protest."

"So we want to make sure he knows that all of Britain is looking down on him and laughing at him,” Murray said.

Trump is scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom next week. His schedule largely diverts him away from London, where he will spend only one night, allowing him to avoid protests planned in the city.
