Team speed or Lack thereof

wait.....you're black???? when did that happen

wait again...black feathers??? I knew it....******* raven troll

I'll take a wild guess and say he's been black since the movie Soul Man came out, likely before then though I'm not sure of his age.

How about some sources. Burns won't be on this team for long...and he was never a sub 4.4 guy. Try 4.46

Haden is not fast. Over 4.5 Nelson is not fast. 4.49 was his best time at the combine, and that was a while a ago. Layne was a 4.5 guy. If you want to throw in Hilton, he isn't fast either.

If you're going to quote numbers sources first, then you'll be more accurate. Yes you are confused. Research it for yourself, then comment. The 2nd reply from you will be interesting.

As for our WR's, 3 of our top 4 guys are 4.5+ types. Only Moncreif has what I would call good speed for his position.

Not trying to to clown you or anyone else here...just calling it as it is.

How it is, is you are sticking to 40 times way too much.. Speed on the playing field is what matters. Instincts, coverage skills, and playmaking skills, and tackling skills is what matters.

They don't line up and run straight lines on the football field.

Not to clown you or anyone else. Just calling it like it is.

We don't need a lot of speed at RB, Conner will just run that *** over. Jaysam will get open and has the hands to glue to passes. And Snell yeah will have to show what he has but his college tape had some beast looks............

You always need speed, at least at one position. If you don't have it defenses can afford to play their safety up, and tighter man or bump and run coverage.

James Conner has competitive speed, and can rip many 10-20 yard rounds. Samules is a bit quicker / faster and showed how good he can be vs New England. He looked like star as the starter. All I ask is Conner holds on to the football a bit better and the Steelers use Samuels a bit more so Conner doesn't break down...again. I don't think Snell is anything but a short yardage guy. Not a fan of that pick. Was a fan of the Samules pick.

Yeah I'm not real sold on 40 times and actual football speed.

Didn't JuJu run like a 4.5? Because he blew past a few of those defenders last year if I remember correctly. I think the speed that Barron and Bush will bring to the middle of the defense is going to make a difference. You don't necessarily have to have the fastest CBs, but guys with good technique to recover and smooth hips. Hell, look at Richard Sherman. Granted, he gets away with a lot of tugging, but the guy isn't fast -- but he's damn good. Or was. I haven't really followed them in a while.

fast 40 times don't necessarily make fast players. And 4.5 is not exactly slow...not elite speed, but not slow

Guys train for the 40 at the combine and their pro days. Doesn't necessarily mean they run close to that all padded up....or on a typical day at practice.

The Steelers may not have elite speed all over the roster, but they are not necessarily a "slow" team either. They needed an upgrade at ILB and it looks like they may have found it in Bush. The OLBs are fast enough and the secondary is not losing battles because they are getting out ran, they are either in poor position or just blowing their coverage (see Burns)

Who is this Samules guy? He will have a hard time making the roster with Samuels, Conner, and Snell ahead of him on the depth chart. Can he play TE?

And if you watch the games it's easy to see who has the speed and who doesn't. 40 times are pretty reflective of how the player is for the most part. There are exceptions.

I'm NOT saying the other stuff doesn't matter. This is a team speed or lack thereof thread. My guess is if we use the accurate 40 yard dash times not the fantasy ones another posted, my point is proven, which if why don't want to talk about it.

This team could use a player like Bryant, Parker or Wallace...on their first contracts on offense. We could also use a Polamalu or Taylor type at DB.

Team speed at the positions that demand it the most are average on this team. Bush could be our fastest man, and he's an ILB. Well maybe some DB or WR we cut is the fastest man but in terms of those who play offense or defense...

Iron,

I think our starting corners are slower than average and only one of our top four receivers is a sub 4.45 and he’s really not that fast

Team speed at receiver and cornerback could be better.

I tend to agree at wr. I think we have good route guys who can get open that way, bit last year we lacked a physical mismatch that made safeties respect them and thus brown was just doubled or tripled all the time...

This team needs a guy like a bryant or burress that has the speed and size to scare guys or a freak speed one trick pony like wallace to take the top off of defenses.

I wasn’t trying to poke anybody.. it just seems like no matter who posts something no matter what the subject, there’s always someone just sitting back waiting to respond in a negative way or say something condescending..I’ve been a Steelers fan for over 35 years and I know our roster inside and out from the practice squad to the studs and I have Steelers news in my google search and check it several times a day.. I read every article no matter the site.. if it involves the Steelers I read it...so I don't miss much. As you can see I don’t post very often, but I do know my ****. I read all the threads on here, because there’s a lot of good insight and for the most part, everyone is pretty plugged in to the state of the franchise. The reason I don’t post often is because of all the constant bickering.. like I said the sharks are circling every time you post just waiting to tear apart your thread or make a smart *** comment..I’m not directing this at Coolie, this is just what I see out of everyone on here. Only reason I posted today was because everyone was jumping all over Coach for his post. I interpreted his post not to say that our team defense was slow, but that we really don’t have elite speed out of any of the skill positions. So that’s why I posted what I did about Devin Bush and his 40 time. I knew there was about an 80% chance that someone was gonna have something smart to say about it. When Coolie posted what he did I got a little sarcastic, but honestly I have nothing against Coolie, I’ve never met the man in my life. I was just reacting out of the frustration of feeling like you gotta walk on eggshells every time you oust something here

that is a lot of words when you could have just said "coolie is a fuckhead".

The difference between a 4.4 and a 4.6 is how you stand up out of the box. If you train, you get elite numbers. When we see those same players on the field: JuJu is sprinting past 4.4/4.3 guys WITH ANGLES. So tape speed is always the best gauge of a player's speed on the field. DJ is way faster on tape than time. And this team D plays fast at DL, OLB, and Safety, even if they aren't elite track timed players.

If only we moved up one more spot to grab Oliver, our DL would be the fastest in the LEAGUE!!!

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to CoolieMan again.

Yes, I am twin boy! Oh, Supe, Ark, DBS and I have a real treat for you when you come to Tampa...

You get it. As for others, they can speak for themselves. Correct we do not have top speed at WR or CB positions in general. We have good speed at the starting TE, and ILB. So so speed at RB.

Coach, I hate when you post general chyt...were you drinking heavily when you concocted this gem???

He has always zeroed in too much on 40's. He does it with the draft too. As he was hanging on Greedy's nuts in the draft process as he loved his speed.
