depends how much decent/good olb free agents are around and their price . i would take a look at mcphee , jabal sheard (if recovered), or tmaba hali if is cut to sign houston .. then i would weight all the options .
I don't think anyone is penciling him as a starter or anything, just an interesting guy to see if he can step it up.Sure, but there's a guy like that every year. We all love to root for the guy who has good combine numbers and made a couple plays in Q4 of a preseason game or two, but until proven otherwise he is nothing more than a camp body...the next Adrian Robinson or Andre Frazier or the many others that we've all forgotten about...
I was looking on one website and they were suggesting we pick some DE that is over 6' and weights 220. How in the hell can a 220 lb dude take on a 350 lb offensive lineman on almost every play? That is just stupid. The dude would be worn out by half time. We need someone 250 lbs, strong and fast. I don't want any more projects coming from the 1st or 2nd rounds. Those guys need to be able to hopefully start in year 1. Any project type players come from the later rounds. Sounds obvious to me but what the hell do I know.
Just what we need!~Not skilled as a pass rusher.
Walterfootball has us taking Owamagbe Odighizuwa in the second. Two hip surgeries made him miss the entire 2013 season.

I know people don't want to hear this, but I fully expect Tombert to franchise tag Jason Worilds this off-season.
We'll release Polalmalu and announce a big Roethlisberger contract to lower his cap hit in March and franchise tag Worilds.
We'll play around with what little money we have left to sign some mid-level free agents in the secondary/RB to fill in holes. We'll draft an OLB, OT and secondary depth with our top-4 picks.
We'll sign Heyward, Worilds and Beachum to long-term contracts in July/August (in that order).
Next year we'll have Worilds and Jones as our starting OLB. We'll still have good depth at ILB. We'll have Moats and Zumwaldt and rookie at backup OLB. We'll have a lot of new no-name faces in the secondary. The D-line stays the same (no Keisel).
That's it. Nothing fancy.

You think they will get Worilds to sign a long term contract after tagging him again? I won't mind if they sign him to some contract as long as it isn't particularly generous. I hope we don't tag him, but they might considering our other options at OLB, at this point. I agree with Ron that someone will overpay him, I just hope it isn't us. I'm not sure, this year, what "overpay" means to me, though. I wouldn't offer him as much as I would have last year.
The way I see it, our primary needs are OLB, CB, NT, and S.
With the 22nd pick, it is likely the best three edge rusher and best three DB's will be gone. I do not want to reach for a Jarvis Jones or Chad Scott type in round one. So what do we do? IMO, our run defense, once a hallmark of excellence has become soft. When the Steelers were advancing in the playoffs, we had great DT's or NT's. Men like Joe Greene, Joel Steed, or Casey Hampton. McClendon is adequate ( and a free agent soon ) but he's also part of a run defense that gave up 4.4 yards a carry. Only a a handful of teams were worse. To compound the problem, Shazier isn't a big guy and will likely have issues shedding blocks. But if you keep a player like Shazier clean from traffic, he can really shine.
A new man in the middle is needed. The good news is there is one with a projected mid to late first round grade. That man is Danny Shelton.
Shelton is a true two gap NT, who not only can occupy blockers, he can be disruptive! For a nose tackle he has rare production in terms of sacks and QB pressure. In addition he hustles a lot and has been reported as a bright young man. Don't get me wrong, I want OLB Gregory, or OLB Ray in round one. If mock drafts are close to accurate, both Ray and Gregory are top 12 picks.

So perhaps we don't reach for OLB or CB in round one, and pick a player who can upgrade the run and pass D. Then pick BPA in rounds 2-4 on OLB, CB, and S.
Thoughts?
Yes. I expect the tag and then a long-term deal in which he gets overpaid. Just like Max Starks.
Starks was tagged around $7.5 million in 2009 (can't find the exact amount). That tag value resulted in a 4-year, $26.3 million contract with $11.4 million paid to him that first year total. Nothing after that was guaranteed.
If we project that to a guessed $10 million tag for Worilds, you would get a 4-year, $35 million deal with $15 million paid out this year (in salary and bonuses) as an equivalent Max Starks type deal. No money would be guaranteed other than this year's $15 million.
I could see the exact same thing happening with Jason Worilds. In fact, I see no difference between the two situations. Both are average players at their position. Both coming off tags. Both at premier positions (LT vs. pass rusher). Both at positions we have no other player on the roster that can play the spot.
I couldn't agree more, but Tomlin does like him and said he had a very productive season and singled him out after the season. If Worilds gets that contract, Tombert should be fired on the spot. Over paying mediocre FA is just like over-drafting for need. Neither can sustain winning.
I didn't remember the tag on Starks ending up with a contract in the same year. Thanks for the clarification.
I hope you are wrong about them giving Worilds all of that.

My top 3 picks for the Steelers:
1.22 - Dante Fowler, OLB UF (Can be used as 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE, position flexibility is big with Tomlin)
2.56 - PJ Williams, CB. FSU (Need an upgrade and competition)
3.87 - Ben Koyack, TE, ND (Seems to be the best all round TE in the draft)
I'm counting on teams losing their minds and players falling that you wouldn't think would fall.

Shelton looks like a beast perfect kind of guy for us...
