Tajh Boyd, new Steelers QB

That is just odd. We ask some guy if he's been working out and sign him based on passing a physical? Yeah we had a high grade on him, that's why we didn't draft him. Some of the roster moves leave me just shaking my head, there are so many areas that need improvement and QB isn't one of them. Gradkowski has to be one of the best backups to one of the best QBs in the league. How about we go find a safety, an OLB, a backup RB, a TE, a couple CBs, and a DE before we even begin to think about a QB that couldn't pass Geno on the Jets depth chart.

Wow...talk about over reacting. You do know this is just a camp body...maybe he beats out Landry but is that really a big accomplishment?

It'll be sad for him when he gets crushed by Landry f'in Jones. We need a QB with no accuracy like we need OLBs with no pass rush moves

When you are talking about your 3rd/4th QB, you aren't to get anyone with any kind of a track record. I don't know why anyone would expect a guy competing for the last QB on the roster to be somebody with a household NFL name. This is the guy that if he ever has to get in to a game, you're season is already ******. The whole point for the 3rd QB is to take a flyer on a long shot either in the draft or off the scrap heap and try and determine whether there is any potential there at all for the future.

it just means that they will not waste a pick on a QB in the 4th, 5th or 6th round that would be a camp body anyway. Ben will sign his new contract, Grad is his capable back-up and Jones and Boyd can help toss ball around in camp. It is what it is. This is "news" until a lot of the hammers fall next week. This board will blow up when the real hard decision are made. This is a normal, under the radar signing. Didn't they sign Troy Smith and was cut before camp a few years ago?

Taj Boyd....another player from Hampton Va in the tradition of Hampton Roads (Brooks, Curry, Vick, Tyrod Taylor). Tomlin got that hometown hookup as he's from N. News. Just saying?

might be a decent slot WR.

not a great QB, but someone was throwing those passes at Clemson...he's been on some big stages.

it's an upgrade.

I was thinking the same thing. Tomlin was probably helping a local player out... I hope he works out.

Gradkowski is not a good backup, horrible stats, weak arm and terrible winning percentage if he has to start for any amount of time.

If Ben goes down long term our season will be over. Most likely you can say that about any team in the NFL. For a game or two Gradkowski can get the job done....especially with a heavy does of Bell.

Flash! This is the big F/A signing everyone was wanting.

Really ? Where is any evidence in his awful career that Gradkowski can win games ? His career passer rating is a hideous 65, his win loss record is a terrible 6-14. But he did throw 3 4th quarter TDs against the Steelers hence Tomlins infatuation.

LOL....He's a Vet....who out there would you rather have?

I would rather have Christian Ponder than any of our backups. I know a lot of people don't like him, but I don't think he's that bad a QB if he has some pieces around him. He at least went 10-6 one year with a 80+ rating one year when he was 24 years old.

I think if Ponder was forced to play with our offensive talent around him, you'd get a similar season to his 2012. Not sure I think Gradkowski could do that.

We won't do it, because we're loyal as hell to our veteran backup QB's, but I think for similar money ($2 million/season?) we could improve that backup position and have someone younger that Ben as a backup for a change. That's going to have to happen some day and it's not going to happen with Colbert wasting 3rd-5th round picks. That much is obvious.

We did not sign a QB to compete as the backup , we are stuck with Gradkowski, if Ben goes down for even a game or two our season is over, we can't win with him and our schedule makes the playoffs a reach even without a margin of error.

Did you not say any QB...we signed one....who that is out there do you want....which one....they are out there for a reason. Grad is as capable as any if Ben goes down for a game or two.

We would likely have been better signing a free agent from the dregs of the draft. This guy could not even make a practice squad last year. Grad came in and was moving the team to the red zone when Ben was out injured, Ben can in a promptly threw an int. There were likely better prospects out there.

No he is not as capable as any , he is a terrible passer, a loser as a starter, short with a poor arm, we are done if he plays.

Still waiting for this list of capable back ups that are out there that are better than Grad.

Better yet tell me any veteran backup QBs with a worse QB rating
and won loss percentage that have made 2 million a year the last 2 years going on 3 years than the bum. There were better options out there when we signed him but Tomlin fell in love with him due to a career quarter he had against us, typical Tomlin and his complete inability to detect good veteran free agents.

LOL. ...My point made. There really isn't a better option out there. Now you are saying there was when we signed Grad. Who were they? I won't hold my breath waiting for you to find any.

Not saying he's great or anything but the guy has played on some horrible teams.

4-12 Bucs, 4-12 Browns, and 5-11 Raiders. Sadly one of the five Raider victories came against our Steelers that year.

I hope we all recognize Hanratty is just spouting negative vitriol comments to get a reaction, it's pretty sad really

Gradkowski has played exactly three snaps in his two seasons here and those were in the last game last season. I don't know how you can fairly judge his play other than looking at the game with Oakland a couple years ago where he beat us handily. Unless that was just Tomlin not having the Steelers up for playing a bad team.

We win our division with a bad defense. I watch all this action by other teams making them better and this is what we go out on the line and sign. What are we doing, are we still competitive or our we now officially rebuilding? So we draft to make us better in a few years, yes that is great except Ben will be on the South side of career and we will have no QB. How can the Steeler Nation not shake their heads on what Tomlin and the Steelers are doing in the last few years.

If you aren't being sarcastic then you're a pretty sad human being.

Quit being so racially sensitive. If the Steelers were signing white RBs or CBs, I'd say the same thing. In a league where 80% of all QBs are white, I don't think you can't dismiss the Steelers interest in black QBs as chance. Is there any other NFL team that has had anywhere near as many black QBs in the past 20 years?

Even decent QBs put up decent stats on bad teams while losing, Gradkowski put up horrible stats, career QB rating of 65, while losing. Take out the fluke quarter against us and his QB rating is in the 50s. Again he is a bad QB no matter how you slice it, better QBs were and are out there for CHEAPER.

Dude I'm not going to argue that there are better options out there than Gradkowski, I'm just saying he played on some ****** teams.
