If the Steelers can, they should. Dupree is not worth 16 million in a year cap space. Trade him for a 2nd and 4th round pick if possible then use say 8 million on a veteran pass rusher in free agency.

The value of DUPREE is yet to be determined. The STEELERS will soon determine that value and if they so decide to pay then that is what we will have to live with. I think the non-exclusive tag is the one in order. If that value is to high for the STEELERS then they will get something out of him. They can't trade him currently, they could only trade him if the "TAG" was placed NON-exclusive.

The STEELERS will show they learned after the BELL debacle. Let's hope the long term can be affordable and if not WE knock it out of the park with the draft picks.

I can't count more than maybe four or five OLB's in the league who are better than Bud Dupree, particularly in our D.

What's the point of getting rid of him? Why create a hole when you can fortify a positive, plus advantage on your defense? Especially since history shows it takes a few years for these guys to grow into our scheme, TJ Watt being a rare exception.

So you dump Bud, create a hole at ROLB then draft a rookie who'll be ready to play in 2-3 years when Ben is long gone? No veteran LB you can sign off the street will come close to being as good as Dupree. Just don't see it.

agree for what Clowney is demanding there isnt going to be 34 edge rusher vet that will come in and replace bud not for 8 mill not Clowney not Barrtett JPP past his prime and has never played olb.
so why break the tandom that a oppenent cant double eithier because botrh bud Aand tj are so good ifd left open a sure sack.

Sorry, but we're going to need to pay :

Watt
Fitzpatrick
Bush

Not sure we can afford to pay ALL four what they'll be due, and I'd rather pay the three above than Dupree.
Hopefully we can get something for Dupree somehow, but we've let better talent walk than Bud with no compensation.
He's NOT a break the bank/hamstring the team's finances type player.
He benefits from being opposite TJ.

Agree to an extent but flip that coin....................

DUPREE is good enough that WATT also benefits from the play of Dupree, they feed off each other. OBVIOUSLY Dupree is the weaker link but you get my drift...............................

I do agree with that statement.......with a caveat.
Bud IS good enough to hold his own and IS able to take advantage of the matchups afforded to him, courtesy of TJ.
And because of that success, teams can't simply double TJ ALL the time.
However, to me, TJ is way more irreplaceable than Bud.
Hey, I'd like to keep them all..........and poop gold bricks, end world hunger, cure AIDS, etc.
Just trying to be pragmatic for the future of the team/D.

we wont have to pay Fitzpatrick 0r Bush for another 3 years and by then Ben will probably be off the books.(hope not)

Bud peaked at the right time. We have to pay him

We usually try to pay the guys we want to keep the offseason before their final season.
So Watt will be next offseason, that means Fitzpatrick would be in 2 years. Also we have to resign Cam at some point this offseason and don't forget Nelson next offseason as well, who will get big money, especially if he plays like he did this year and with the age of Haden, and injury history, we can't lose Nelson. So we're going to have to make Watt and Nelson near the highest paid at their position next offseason.

Pay that man. Enough with these weak *** Madden GMs on the board. They're waiting to see if the CBA gets resolved prior to committing to anything. Tagging and then signing him now long term will be a bargain when the cap does go up after the CBA eventually gets finished.

True, but Bud has had 1 good season out of 5, that's risky giving him big money IMO. He still ranked low in QB hits this season. I know I'll get the "well he was in coverage alot prior to this season", if so, he had 5 career passes defensed prior to this season, only 2 career forced fumbles prior to this season. Watt just this season alone had 8 passes defensed, Bud has 9 in his entire career, Watt had 8 forced fumbles, Bud has 6 in his career, Watt had 4 fumble recoveries, Dupree has 3 in his career, Watt had 36 QB hits, Bud had 50 in his career.
If you're going to pay Dupree big time money, you need more than double digit sacks, which he's only done this season, you need a guy that can knock down passes, cause fumbles, etc. And he needs to be capable of being the guy if Watt goes down with an injury, I don't think he can be that. Without Watt opposite him, I don't see him being a very good player.

13-14 per max on a long term deal

So you think on he’s worth 16 million or more a year?

How did the tag go with Worilds?

I bet Dupree on another team has half the amount of splash plays or very close to it on an average defense.

The Steelers are up against the cap and need to prepare for life without Ben. We need all the cap space and draft picks we can get. Not to overpay for the 4th to 6th best player on defense.

The cap is going to raise significantly as it continues to do. $16M today is not the same as $16M tomorrow when TJ is going to get more than Mack and Miller. Pay the man now and call it a bargain. You're not finding a replacement player capable of performing at Bud's level on the open market. He has earned his money.

1. Can you do that. Sign a player to a Franchise Tag and trade him?
2. Who eats the huge 2020 salary he will get. Presumably the trading team will sign him to a long term, but what happens to the Steelers end (The Franchise Tag)?

Yeap, that would be the sweet spot. The cap going up would help a lot to bear that number on the long run.
What also is true is that the team should be All In and I mean throwing the kitchen sink in the next 2 seasons as they are the last Ben years. If keeping Dupree helps this team get a SB I don't care about 2 extra years with a loaded contract

At Bud's level last year, no probably not. At Bud's level prior to last season of 5-7 sacks. Really? You can't find that? I think this is a very risky and complicated long term contract. And if you don't think it is the Steelers obviously had big reservations about signing him prior to last year. They hedged picking up his option instead of signing him long term for a lot less than they would have to now.

I agree win now, but we can't forget about the offense, we have no deep threat, no RB, and a TE that is hot or cold
