Switzer did not know that free kicks were alive.

I wonder if Cowher ever told ol Plaxico he's not down if not touched in the NFL (unlike college rules) before (twice) spiking the ball and causing turnovers like he did before
Again you're comparing a play that happens all the time, to a play that isn't very common.

That pass was the first one he dropped all season. If one dropped pass is bothersome to you, you must be on some serious blood pressure meds.

Actually the 2nd. But he doesn’t get a chance very often so when he does he needs to take advantage of it.

As a pro NFL player especially one in a specialty role, I would think you should know the rules. I have a hard time pinning this one on the coaching staff.

Let's get real, how many really knew the rule on this play? I'll admit I didn't know as this occurrence doesn't happen regularly. The hiccup cost us a score but we bounced back!!!!

I knew, I was SCREAMING. And then to top it off he laughed about it. I wanted him fired on the spot.

Absolutely the player should know, but the coach needs to reassure everyone when it's not a common thing.

Sadly it took two people to really screw that play up.

Nix had to CALL for the fair catch and then inexplicably start running upfield to presumably block... This undoubtedly confused Switzer as he was looking at Nix like , "WTF?" And then of course in his indecision not knowing the rules caused a critical mass of fail.

One of the reasons you have coaches is to actually coach players, especially when not so often seen situations come up in a game.

In those situations, I expect coaches to coach. They typically have decades more experience in the game than the players.

Geez! Years of playing football and your primary job, the reason you’re on the team is ST specifically returning kicks and you don’t know the rules. Maybe coaches assumed as I that he knew rules. Oh well! And how much are they paying him for ST duties? And please no need to tell me he plays the slot if that’s what you want to call him.

A kid that actually has some enthusiasm and you want to throw him under the bus. Burns did not play and we were better with out him should be a better topic. Switzer has more up side and if the Steelers would get him involved in the offense we would be a better team. He makes a bo bo and what let him go. Maybe as in most cases the special team coach remind one of the free kick rule or hell maybe the head coach. After all how many flags have been thrown on us for lining up wrong on a kick off.

B and G I’m not throwing him under the bus just saying he should know the rules after playing since a kid.
And he is not the answer in the slot. He’s not Welker and he’s not Edelman. He’s a guy as far as a receiver goes. Nothing special. I do like him though as a kick off and punt returner.

And I never said cut him. Let him return kickoffs and punts but don’t like him as my slot guy.

If the players know everything already why even have coaches then?

The coaches are there to coach them up making sure they polish their routes, expand their route trees, improve their blocking, etc but come on, the players have to know the rules. This isn’t rocket science it’s ******* football.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll say this. Stupid penalties and poor football IQ, along with an early turnover plagues this team.

Sure we beat the piss out of the Browns ( Don't; ask me how we tied game #1 ) but such sloppy play will not beat New England or Kansa City...and we all know it.

I will say the coaching staff is starting to get it. limiting Burns, and helping out a tackle when needed.
I had to read that like 3 times

I like Switzer. He's been a valuable addition to the team, a smooth and reliable return guy they needed.

Yes, he made a huge mistake, but the bigger error was made by the ST coach, who has one job -- to have his players prepared to execute properly on special teams.

Just watched it again. Here's what I noticed:

a) Both Brown and Switzer were deep to receive the punt.
b) The ball was kicked to Brown's side of the field, and landed to the outside of the hash marks, so it should have been his ball to begin with, not Switzer's.
c) Brown didn't go after the ball, either, he was too busy gesturing to somebody, as if to say it wasn't his fault for the ball rolling an extra 10+ yards.

So I must conclude that Brown was more culpable than Switzer, and neither player (both experienced return men) understood the rules -- which, again, points the finger at the coaching staff.

Rosie Nix should have never signaled a fair catch. A free kick in this situation is always caugh for possession it's a live ball fer crissakes!
No, this one is on the ST coach, that chooch should have had the ST captain on the sidelines reviewing the play as soon as the ref tossed the hankie and awarded the two points. Chewing wads of bubblegum must have turned coach's brain into mush.

Also the kicking team recovering a free kick, can not advance the football. Whether it is muffed or not.

Switz admitted an error. He's learned... I'm satisfied. The guy is quick and I think he adds a few dimensions and worries to other teams when in the slot and backfield.
