Switzer did not know that free kicks were alive.

This is something the coaches should tell the players before the play happens every single time in this scenario. They should remind the players since it is an uncommon thing to happen - maybe a few times a year. Another sign of poor coaching on this team and not surprising.

EXACTLY, poor coaching but we managed a win thus covering the piss poor coaching. Had things gone wrong and this play was the beginning of the loss, I bet we would hear a WAY much more about it. Not all things can be perfect but I would look very hard at a ST replacement coach.

that is totally on the ST coach he need to tell them all that ball is live...or maybe he didn't know either (which is damn scary)...I was screaming at the TV thats a damn live ball get on the ball..my wife is like what are you screaming at..all I could say was how stupid can you be to not know the rules...I was blaming the mighty midget but it goes to the coaches 1st and foremost

The Special teams coach needed to remind players. Nix needed to make a play on the ball. It became a fly ball with confusion when Nix didn't make the play on it. You can fair catch a kick off.

Let's get real, how many really knew the rule on this play? I'll admit I didn't know as this occurrence doesn't happen regularly. The hiccup cost us a score but we bounced back!!!!

I was screaming at the set. I knew it. The Browns knew it. Three Steelers made no attempt to cover it. That's on coaching.

I don't think our club is as elite as DocScott thinks because many here knew it was a "live" BALL AND IF IN QUESTION you jump on it to be safe...football 101.......................... Pretty easy as to just how would that be a dead ball in the middle of the field??? It's NOT a punt as it
s a "free kick"

I know the "rog" has changed many a rules but I don't think the ******** has touched this one.

He said he knows kicks are alive, punts are not, and they kicked the free kick like a punt, he thought it wasn't a live ball.

This is something that the coaches have to relay to the players, especially on these plays that are not very common.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll say this. Stupid penalties and poor football IQ, along with an early turnover plagues this team.

Sure we beat the piss out of the Browns ( Don't; ask me how we tied game #1 ) but such sloppy play will not beat New England or Kansa City...and we all know it.

I will say the coaching staff is starting to get it. limiting Burns, and helping out a tackle when needed.

I know that you know, that you think I know, but I'm not sure you know if I know, so I'm going to assume that I know that I know.

Switzer didn't know. No one told him or confirmed the rules. Thanks Danny Smith for not doing your job!

You commented in the switzer trade thread and never said anything about his low football IQ then.

In the final analysis the Browns certainly didn't know it was live. The refs didn't come flying in and call it Browns ball. The announcers didn't know. Disaster averted. I like Barry Switzer Jr. But he needs to concede every kickoff in the endzone. Period.

I never came close to playing in the NFL and I knew the rule. That’s on Switzer, it should be assumed he knows the rule. Barry Foster did the same damn thing on a regular kickoff.

A regular kickoff happens several times a game, a free kick is an unusual play that rarely happens, coaches need to make sure the returners know the rule

Well he knows now. What's bothersome is his dropping passes. He does know he's suppose to catch the ball before running up field right?

I remember a Miami - Cincy game when Don Shula was still coaching where he had a successful onside kick after a safety. A free kick is a live ball after 10 yards.

That pass was the first one he dropped all season. If one dropped pass is bothersome to you, you must be on some serious blood pressure meds.

I think you should have to handle every kickoff. I often see returners concede the ball and the ref calls touchback without the player handling it. If its a live ball its live. You should have yo catch and take a knee.

it should be assumed he knows the rule.

Because a quick 30 second huddle with your special teams players to make sure everyone is one the same page is too much to expect? I remember when Cowher pulled Bettis aside and told him to make sure he protects the football, yet I would assume he would know to do that too. It is a coaches job to make certain that you are relaying information, even if it is redundant. Someone needs to tell me what exactly it is that Danny Smith actually does, because his special teams units are abysmal.

I wonder if Cowher ever told ol Plaxico he's not down if not touched in the NFL (unlike college rules) before (twice) spiking the ball and causing turnovers like he did before
