He said he knows kicks are alive, punts are not, and they kicked the free kick like a punt, he thought it wasn't a live ball.

This is something that the coaches have to relay to the players, especially on these plays that are not very common.

Definitely, something that should have been covered. Weird that none of his coaches ever told him. Is it like that in college, too?

As i said to others, i didn't know either, but it ain't my job to know.

Ive talked to people in my business and said something that i thought everyone knew only to find out they didn't know, even though they had been in the business for a while, too.

He's returned kicks the entire time he's been in the league, and it's the main reason we traded to get him. How the Hell didn't he know?

this is on the coaches. As a high school player I was involved in 2 sacks. I for each team. both times our coaches were all over the players regarding the kick being a "live ball" this was in high school. you cant tell me that the Browns didn't know. look how they chased it down.

Yeah, they knew, for sure.

Let's get real, how many really knew the rule on this play? I'll admit I didn't know as this occurrence doesn't happen regularly. The hiccup cost us a score but we bounced back!!!!

It's such a rare play and whose to say they didn't cover this scenario in training camp? Switzer wasn't with the team. Anyways, you have such a finite time to get your messages across in this situations, I'm sure there are a ton of other rules just on these types of kicks and you can't expect the coaches to whip out the rule book and review everything. It was obviously a laps in understanding a unique rule and I understand the confusion.

We don't get paid to know it. I can't believe in his entire college (assuming the same rule applies) or pros never told him.

I dont even know if he returned kicks in college.

As a coach, that is something you tell your returner before he goes on the field, no matter if you think he knows or not.

He'll look at our 2005 Super Bowl run, Bettis going in late vs Seattle, and Cowher is telling him make sure you cover the ball up. You really think Bettis doesn't know that, but he was still reassuring him.

you are correct. all coaching on this. this is their job. head coach, off coord and special teams coach should have been al over this

They said Tomlin commented before the game that he wanted the players to be smart and know fundamentals or some ****. Who's supposed to be teaching them, eh?

He went to North Carolina, home of the fake classes and no show classes. Tomlin is more of the same for the guy.

I'm pretty sure this happened against KC earlier this year too. There is no excuse for this kind of oversight. Smith should get canned, but I doubt he will. He must have some nudies of Tomlin with a hooker or something, cause the guy sucks as a ST coach.

1. As a coach, you have no idea what a player knows or doesn’t know, so for routine plays you make sure they have the general rules in camp and practice, but for odd plays or odd formations, you always at least point out to players any weird rule intricacies when they go in. Its no different than pointing out when a truck play like a fake punt or field goal is likely so they know to watch for it...

Thats what these position coaches and coordinators are supposed to be doing on gameday

Maybe the players just can't understand wtf he's saying due to the soccer ball sized wad of gum in his mouth at all times. I mean, most of our players are ******' morons as it is, I bet they just nod along with wide eyes like Tomlin.

I found an article talking about it. I knew I wasn't entirely crazy.

After the safety, the Chiefs had to perform a free kick from their own 20-yard-line and it’s obvious the Steelers receiving team wasn’t sure how to line up. This confusion resulted in Steelers running back Stevan Ridley being penalized 5 yards for an illegal formation and that wiped out a 20-yard return by wide receiver Antonio Brown to the Pittsburgh 47-yard-line.Prior to Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt kicking the football, you can see Steelers outside linebacker Anthony Chickillo was presumably attempting to get Ridley to come up the field and inside the legal restraining line area but unfortunately the running back didn’t get there before the football was kicked. You can see all of this transpire in the gif below that includes Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith in the bottom right-hand corner of the frame

But here's my argument, lets say even if the rules did apply to kickoffs like it does on a punt (like he apparently thought) why not just fair catch it? What yardage do you gain by letting the ball bounce in back of you and letting it roll down field the other way losing yards when you can just fair catch it on the spot? Imo this was just a total brain fart by Switzer. He probably thought AB was going to handle the return and just started moving upfield. Probably more of a communication thing than anything.

So they knew chased it down and instead of picking it up and getting an untouched TD they just decided to fall on it?

oh ok, didn't know that cheers
