It’s been a thing in other sports with later trade deadlines for a while... i mean letting vets chase championships...
But if you are a losing team it makes sense... lots of sense, for guys without a lot of dead cap and short or expiring contracts that won’t be factors in a rebuilding phase, at least
A.) You save gamecheck money. Never a bad thing when you aren’t making the playoffs
B.) you get younger guys experience and get to see how they have developed thus far
C.) you get a rep as a team that works with vets to make them satisfied... that actually matters in some free agent eyes... teams with dick reputation have to pay more to get guys...
