Steelers work out two punters and a LS

Btw, i dont think berry is all that great either. But, it is clear (or should be) that future HOFer Wile is not much better, therebis not proof that if he is at all better.. You dont replace a guy because "anybody is better". Weve seen that not be true many times.

Berry is punting for his job. The steelers already looked at two other punters. One more bad game and he's OUT. Berry is bottom of the barrel in many areas of punting. Average at best leg, lack of hang time, and shanks too many punts.

IMO WIle is better, maybe not by much, but better and the guy I wanted to draft ( Dickson ) is much better. Boy our defense and special teams could use Dickson. I said it before he's got pro bowl ability. Its very early, but his start is amazing. If he keeps this up, you're taking about the best to ever do it. A big IF, but the early results suggest he can.

It is you berry time of the month? Punters are easy goats.

Ever hear the term scapegoat? I'll tell you the story. They used to be called the escape goat. Some species of goats go into a virtual spasm when it sees a predator so farmers would keep a few around, allowing the more valuable animals to escape. Hence the term scape goat. Tough job.

Berry isn't the teams biggest problem, but he's the easiest one to fix.

I have no problem replacing him coach, but not in the draft. I wouldn't be upset if he was canned tomorrow. Provided they brought in a better option.

so after 4 pagers of jibber jabber did they sign anyone?

I have no idea if its the holder but the moron says teams covet aussie football players as holders and punters is asinine. Punting is a skill not an athletic feat and of course Wile is a better punter with a vastly superior and CONSISTENT leg than Berry who has been at the bottom pf both the punting average and net punting stats for 3 years and counting as a Steeler. Tomlin stupidly went with the inferior punter this year and it has already cost us to the point he is auditioning replacements.

On the long punt return the Chiefs had scouted Berry and knew he had a weak and inconsistent leg so they put an ADDITIONAL returner in the game with Hill so he could field and return the expected short punt. That is coaching and game planning something tomlin knows little about.

Punting is a skill, and not an athletic feat. Seriously??? Where else do you perform punting actions? I’ve only seen them on sporting events. Someone please advise if it is used in a non athletic activity professionally.

Actually teams are favoring Aussie style punters because of how they place kicks on a bounce. A reason why there’s been a proliferation of Aussie kickers the last 10 years.

The actual reason for that long punt return last week wasn’t because of Berry’s kick. He actually did what he is asked to do (keep away from KC’s return threat and pin it close to the sideline. What caused the long return by the up back was Matt Thomas missed his assignment and didn’t force or tackle the ball carrier who was right there next to him.

Of course I know why punters are the holders. They have the time to work with the holder and kicker while the regular players practice.

Nope.

For several years now most teams have started using Punters as holders, because of the emphasis of protecting QBs from injuries during place kick block attempts.

So the coaches decide to use Justin Hunter in a heavy role week one then bench him week two.

Now they cut a punter who outperformed Berry and two weeks later are trying out punters because Berry isn't getting the job done.

How do these guys evaluate players?

The same way they develop defensive schemes and draft boards.

So I guess there is nobody out there that can outdo Berry? Damn. Hard to believe.

Why not. Most 5-7th round picks are cut. I'll take a guy who can kick his team out of trouble, limit returns with his hang time and leg if our guy is in the bottom 20%. Heck Colbert drafted a long snapper. Talk about a luxury pick.

I didn't like the LS drafted either.

Just look at our D, easily the biggest weakness. We really need to focus on fixing that. Unless you like the air show opposing offenses are creating when playing the Steelers. And let's face it last year that D was a weakness too.

I can not recall one holder getting hurt to the point where he misses a game. Examples are needed.

A better explanation is punters and kickers tend to be friends and work well with each other. I'd rather have a back up QB hold, just in case we plan a pass or something happens where he has to get the ball and run with it.

I'll put in an *. It there is an excellent long snapper who can run and tackle like a linebacker in kick coverage...okay, maybe he's worth a late draft pick. As it stands most long snappers are the 2nd worst kick coverage and tackler player on the field, one better than the punter himself. If your long snapper is a real plus in kick coverage, you've got something extra.

I think early in WAREN's career he was an asset as you describe. He was also a pretty good long snapper but just broke down with age.

Salute the nation

Close enough to where I was going with that comment. Boswell better get out of his funk.

Did I say there were any occurrences? No. I said it was an emphasis to protect QBs.

You see Coach there is this thing called the CBA which is how the NFL works now. QBs pre-2000 started to be faded out as holders because the previous CBA had a rule that disallowed the team's 3rd QB from entering in the game unless it was as an emergency. If you understood what the CBA meant you would realize that the only other active player that can be used without limitation is the punter. So most teams would only carry 2 QBs as active. The rule was voted out on the second recent CBA (2010 or 2011). No one has returned to QBs much since the punter method has worked fine.

Um right and I asked for the injuries....there were none. So protecting the back up QB means little. Would you rather have a QB hold or a punter? I'll take the back up QB if he's good at it.

If you would read...the original CBA forced teams not to dress 3 QBs as teams usually did in the past. Therefore punters...were chosen by most teams...

So in your world, if the backup QB is the holder and he gets injured in a FG attempt, whose your backup QB....the punter?
