Steelers sign veteran DB Donald Washington

Posted by Zac Jackson on May 9, 2016, 10:52 AM EDT

The Steelers are signing four players who participated as tryouts in their rookie minicamp last weekend, including veteran defensive back Donald Washington.

Washington, 29, was a fourth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2009 and played three seasons in Kansas City as a safety. He played three seasons in the CFL as a cornerback, and Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review wrote that the Steelers tried out Washington as a cornerback and plan to use him there. - Pro football talk.

>>>Okay, we have picked four DB's in the past two drafts....Golson, Grant, Burns and Davis. Gay is proven. Cockrell is proven. Why sign Washnington now?

Maybe Golson and Grant aren't that good....

Sounds like a player to directly compete with Grant and makes it that much harder for Grant to make the opening day 53 just like last year.

I think Colbert & Tomlin are trying to put together as competitive group as they can for camp & pre-season. As the saying goes, may the best man win. I doubt this is any type of indication how they feel about Grant, Golson or anyone else.

My thoughts exactly. But Washington is a 5th type of CB at best. Gay, Corkrell and Burns are locks. Someone has to play the slot. That could be Golson.

Colbert loves OSU players. With so many young players, I want them to get a lot of reps, not have some veteran journeyman in the picutre.

Maybe Tomln thinks Golson is injury prone, and Grant a bit of a tweener between corner and saftey. Burns is very raw and might have a tough time getting on the field. So a veteran ( Washington ) who can play in the dime for now, could be the reason for this move.

I took a look at Washington's combine. He had a 45" vertical leap. Very rare. Good size. Okay speed. Might be better off at saftey.

I think competition is the exact reason for this signing. Washington is 29, played in the NFL then the CFL. Imagine this literally being your last shot at your NFL dreams... do you think you might work a little harder than the guy next to you? Do you think that might push that young guy to try harder?

I like the move.

Camp body for now. The dude is 29 and hasn't made it in the NFL yet. If he does, great. More bodies in our crappy secondary pool the better.

At this point the more the merrier.

I don't feel like its a significant signing. He's a nobody until he shows something.

Maybe Coach'll understand this logic???

I don't think this is a direct reflection about how the Steelers feel about their recent draft picks but more about getting as much competition and talent into training camp as they can.

We don't talk enough here about how solid the Steelers scouting is not just in the draft but everywhere else as well. They have routinely pulled talent out of a whole variety of places. Roosevelt Nix and Alejandro Villanueva are perfect examples as far as guys who are on the roster now. Even Ross Cockrell who they liked in the draft a few years back and look at how much hes contributing. BTW people need to not write Cockrell off just yet. He may turn out to be a great find. He didn't even get a full training camp last year but showed some really good instincts.

There is a lot more field to cover in the CFL, MAYBE he got better? I also agree it just looks like more competition, god knows they need it after the last few years.

so we do something - everything we can - to address our deplorable secondary and there's STILL bitching?

thing is for the Coaches in the world that just don't well get it.

It is this...

going into training camp you have no "backup" "experience" at CB and SS.

so you better bring some experience in to compete, and perhaps stick. Perhaps not.

But you better try with a team so close to something special............

Why NOT?????? What does bringing in someone hurt??? Competition is always good and with this secondary and the guys we have, more competition should be viewed as a good thing. That's how I'm looking at it. Back up material is nearly as important as starter material. Possibly Just one play different in the two................

Salute the nation

maybe we can get Heath Evans to play CB?

I liked Cockrell and would have taken him in round three in his draft class. He's a smart play maker with some size. I just would not count on him to play tight man deep vs the faster WR's in the NFL.

It cracks me up when Tomlin or Colbert says so and so is still learning the system. In reality the player to quote Tomlin doesn't have it above the neck, or is liekly a poor draft pick. Yet a guy like Cockrell kicked off an NFL roster left can come in here, learn our system and play well in next to no time!

Camp fodder

Looking at the Hamilton tiger cats I think the Steelers should look at that Emmanuel Davis. 5 picks and 3 tds last year.

What cracks me up is that.......you know, I know and everyone everyone else knows this but it still seems to get a reaction from you and a bunch of other posters.
