Steelers select Bud Dupree in the 1st round

I've been wanting the Steelers to take a corner high in the draft for years now so I was really disappointed when Peters got picked. Once he was gone, along with Johnson, I figured they would be picking between Dupree, Ray, and Gregory and Dupree seems the safest pick of the three.

He certainly seems like an incredible athlete and I hope he turns into the next great LB. But we still need that corner!!

I, too, was mortified when I heard KC select Peters; but, it is what it is. After a good rest - and some more research - Buddy is being compared to Jevon Kearse. Should he pan out so - we hit a gold mine.

But, we do need another DB to mix into the rotation - personally, I'd like to see Collins...

oh yeah - SEC baby!

Most of us will give you our full support if you give max effort. But be prepared for some negatives from some who hate anyone Tombert drafts.

eh, not too impressed how he can't get off the blocker. Made a few decent plays, but got run over a few times. We'll see what Butler and Porter can do with him. Still hoping it's a home run.

He is raw...needs to learn how to use his leverage, and especially his hand work/placement. That can be taught.

Soundsw like he may be a worker. Just need to keep things in perspective. He is onkly a rookie, not the comming of Kevin Greene, but one can hope.

Salute the nation

you weren't supposed to be impressed - like I said - it wasn't a fluffy highlight reel

they had him all over the field on every other play

now here's the year before - he stayed pretty much on the left side of the D

I value an actual game video way more than a highlight reel. It shows strengths and weaknesses.

He certainly has ability and athleticism. I'm anxious to see him in a year or two what he can do. Studying beside James Harrison will be very good for him.

I love it. People hated Jarvis Jones because he wasn't a good enough athlete and now they hate Dupree because he's only a good athlete.

Dupree fills a need and was a good value. No surprise they went olb since butler is now our dc.

I haven't really heard too many that hated this pick. Maybe the only ones that are bitching about not taking a corner, but it's been rather positive. Dupree is great value at #22. The FO was tempted to trade up for him, but he kept falling. They are thrilled they got their man, so we should be, too.

I'm good with it and hope he works out. I didn't like the Jones pick because he was small and has a spinal condition that I rightly thought would keep him from getting bigger and stronger. I thought Spence was a good pick but then he tore up his knee.

Love the pick, never thought he would be there (Especially after his combine). So glad he was there for us, not only did I want this guy, not only does he fill a need, he was the BPA.

I'm confused by the Randy Gregory love, people who wanted him over Dupree. So many people rag on Jarvis because of his weight and how underweight he is, yet they want a guy who played around 228, while he put weight on for his pro day getting into the 240's, it didn't take long to where he was back down to 230 during a pre draft visit. How is weight not an issue with Gregory, but it is with Jarvis. This is not an endorsement of Jarvis as much as it is a question regarding Gregory (Not to mention all the mental and character red flags). Dupree is 269, but moves like a guy at 230, while he is raw he will only get better. Everyone has their opinion I was just confused by people endorsing Gregory even with his weight, yet they will discount Jarvis for his weight, thats all I'm wondering.

The difference between Gregory and Jarvis is that Jarvis is small and SLOW. And Jarvis's frame is almost maxed out already so he doesn;t have room to get much bigger. Gregory is thin and fast. Gregory also has a long frame with room to easily add more weight.

The bottom line is Gregory is the prototype pass rusher with his length and athleticism. His biggest negative is his weight and that's the most easily fixed negative. The off field issues may be what hold him back.

Gregory is a boom or bust type. Jarvis was always a mild tremor or bust type due to his physical limitations. If Gregory did not have off field issues, he would have been a top 10 pick.

I think another thing is many of us researched Gregory a lot more than Dupree because nobody thought Dupree would be available for the steelers.

They were right about Jarvis Jones.

I saw him get doubled on one occasion. That indicates to me the other team was worried about him. Sometimes you are not going to beat the guy on the other side or when you complete your assignment there is no sack or tackle at the end of it, one of the other guys is supposed to make the play. The new guy is what I thought from the draft data a good player that will be taught technique as he goes.

I expect his development to go like Tuitt's in that he gets spot duty initially and as he develops he gets in more and more till he becomes a good starter for us and we then have a good back up in Moates that can be used as a rotational player to give other guys breaks and keep fresh legs on the field.

Well, if this twitter pic is any example, he's definitely willing to work hard. Before pick is (I believe) sometime in January; before the combine. After pick is March 11; after the combine. Shows me that he kept working even after he put up the great workout at the combine. Self-motivation and discipline is a good thing.

After watching that...ugh. he looks lost, beat, often out of position and slow. Why is everyone so high on him? That video was a horrible example of OLB play.

I honestly haven't seen much else about him. I know ESPN projected him to Atlanta. So, I guess it's a wait and see situation.

It's a wait and see situation every year; with every pick. Very few of them come in and are finished products from day one.

Very solid pick imho.

Tomlin said Dupree will begin as a left outside linebacker for the Steelers, where right now the team has returning veteran Arthur Moats and not much else
.

Starting out on the left side, and with him being 6-foot-4, 269 pounds, there is an obvious comparison to LaMarr Woodley. But Tomlin quickly dismissed those comparisons based on playing style and experience.

“Lamar was a converted defensive lineman in college. Bud has played on his feet and played detached from the core,” said Tomlin. “He showed a much wider variety of skill-set on his college tape. You can find some comparisons in terms of measurables or weight, but it really kind of ends there.”

For Dupree, his wait in the green room in Chicago ended when the Steelers called his name, and he said he’s excited for what he sees as this new beginning.

“I think I’m in the right position,” said Dupree. “I’m glad that Coach Tomlin gave me a chance, and I will prove him right.”

In hindsight, General Manager Kevin Colbert tipped the Steelers’ hand some 72 hours before the draft. With the emphasis on upgrading the team’s defense, specifically the team’s defense when the football is in the air, Colbert had been asked to assess the talent pool from which the team would be picking starting on Thursday night.

“I think the cornerback group is good,” said Colbert. “The outside linebacker types, which for us is a 4-3 defensive end for some 4-3 teams, this is probably as good a group at that position as I’ve seen in 10-15 years. It’s really an exceptional group with a lot of impact-type guys.

Dupree has such exceptional physical skills - 270 lbs., 4.57 speed, incredible vertical - that I am befuddled as to why the game clips show him almost never beating the OT.

He has some work to do.
